Earth has just joined the Galactic community. However, there is a problem with being recognised as an independent species. They have to station a human ambassador on every home world - or somewhere in the system - but there are nearly as many species as there are humans.
Yes they do. It's just that their morals are rooted in "protect the people and things closest to me at all costs". Their values are extreme tribalism. They also believe those outside the group are constantly threatening the safety and prosperity of the in-group.
This is why so much of what they do seems contradictory and hypocritical. Yes, they want prosperity for those they consider "like them", but they are also willing to do things that harm themselves if it harms the "enemy" more. And, they blame the enemy for that harm, not themselves.
It's literally "this is why we can't have nice things". It's your fault.
A conservative may think, "welfare might be nice, and it's true all my neighbors depend on it, but those welfare queens are stealing it, so we can't have it. Public pools might be nice, and they provide a safe place for my children to play, but people I consider unclean might use them, so we can't have them."
This is how a conservative woman can justify an abortion for herself, but not for others, even though anti-abortion laws make it harder for her to get that abortion in the first place.
What needs to be done will morph and change, external influences will change what they think are important values for the inside group to have to some degree, but at the core it's always about protecting their own.
When I was in highschool, I had a conversation that truly made me understand how conservatives think on a fundamental level. I was discussing with a conservative family friend an essay I was writing that was arguing for the decriminalization of sex work and I spent a while laying out my various arguments and why this issue was important and at the end she said to me "okay, but I don't want my daughter to think that is an acceptable thing to do".
I (being a teenager) was confused by this because this issue is so much larger than just her daughter. So I tried again to explain how many people are harmed by sex work criminalization and how decriminalization would decrease sex trafficking and she repeated again, with a smile on her face: "I don't want my daughter to do that and decriminalization would signal that that is an acceptable thing for her to do".
I was struck with a moment of realization that the way I see the world is the exact opposite of this woman. She fundamentally saw the world as centered on her and her loved ones as individuals, and was completely unconcerned with how it would affect society on a larger level. To her, the material harm that was caused to thousands of people is completely inconsequential when compared to the imagined possibility of it signaling something to her family that she personally disagrees with. That is, at it's core the conservative mindset.
i go absolutely ape shit buck wild when people ask me if i want to run errands with them like Let’s Fucking Go. and my mind absolutely maxes out of dopamine when they ask if i wanna stop for coffee. and if someone took me to the park id go bonkers in funcking yonkers
“Look, I know it seems counterintuitive, but, when you’ve never been free, when every decision has been made for you, when you have no idea what you’re supposed to do or why, restriction can feel like freedom. He needs these rules so he can start making safe decisions.”
“But how far do we go? What if we go too far and he won’t tell us that there’s something wrong? We could hurt him worse by trying to help…”
“Right now he’s terrified to move, he won’t get out of bed or drink water or speak without permission, we’re more likely to miss something without rules. And he deserves to feel like he’s not just flying blind, waiting for one of us to beat the shit out of him. He’s already aware that there are rules to the world, he just doesn’t know what they are and which ones are going to hurt.”
“So where do we start?”
“We start with what he needs to be doing. Bedtimes and what time to wake up in the morning, when to eat, what to eat, meds to take and when-“
“It’s not like he’s a child, and god if he wants to sleep in, shouldn’t we let him? If he wants to eat a midnight snack, doesn’t he deserve to decide that?”
“Yes. But right now he’s not sleeping in, he’s hiding in bed because he doesn’t know if it’s safe to get up. He’s not eating because he doesn’t know if he’s allowed, he’s not making any of those decisions because he can’t even exist yet without being fucking terrified. If we can get him on a routine, he can relax enough to hopefully start to trust us.”
“I know that, I know he needs some framework, but what if he takes these rules too deeply? What if they get too deep? Then we’ve just upgraded his prison instead of actually getting him out and safe.”
“We’re gonna have to be careful. That’s the only thing we can do with any of this.”
We all love when the whumper’s own scars are revealed to the person hurting them after they’ve been trying to hide them for so long because they’re ashamed and humiliated at being seen as a victim themselves sure.
But what about a whumper who is proud of their scars, who shows them freely, who says ‘I suffered this and so can you’, who knows exactly what it feels like and that’s why they know their victim could be taking it better.
Badly Injured Hero Sidekick Shows up at Villain's Base to Beg for Help part 46
Warnings: restrained hero, references to past sexual abuse, sidekick whumpee, creepy & manipulative hero whumper, discussion about loss of free will/loss of autonomy
Now that Sidekick was on good terms with Villain again, he asked for time with Hero, to get closure. And so Villain had graciously decided to keep Hero in captivity for as long as Sidekick needed to get that closure, before he'd let Vigilante have his way with Hero or dump him back at Agency's doorstep. He was holding onto Hero for Sidekick's benefit alone.
Hero stayed thoroughly restrained at all times except for when he was permitted to use the restroom, in which case Vigilante and Henchman temporarily unchained and escorted him to and from the bathroom despite the power-suppressing cuff Hero had on one ankle that made him less of a threat.
They both stayed together whenever Hero was untethered to supervise his every move, not wanting to take any chances whatsoever that he might cause trouble -- and they were right, because Hero made three separate escape attempts on different days before finally realizing it was pointless to try when every time ended with Vigilante smashing his face into the floor, pinning him down, or Henchman putting him in a chokehold. With the two of Villain's strongest teammates always watching him like hawks, Hero was outnumbered, and outpowered, by a lot. Resistance would get him nothing but a busted lip.
The only time that routine was broken was why his pathetic little apprentice showed up every day.
Sidekick spent an hour every day for a whole week just sitting in a chair in the same room Hero was restrained in, casually reading a book or something, to slowly adjust to the fact that Hero could be physically nearby and not be hurting him. To desensitize himself to the natural anxiety that spikes in Hero's presence. It was a confidence exercise, because Sidekick wanted to eventually tell Hero exactly what was on his mind without fear.
At first Hero taunted and hurled insults at him, but when Sidekick firmly ignored it and never responded, he seemed to realize that Sidekick coming in to read a book was just the new normal, and he was expected to tolerate it without comment.
And it wasn't very entertaining to get zero reaction from a conversation anyway, so Hero had eventually given up trying to get a rise, switching to having conversations with himself in an effort to at least be a little annoying. He was still bitter that Sidekick had managed to successfully manipulate him during the second interrogation and get information on Agency's secret plans that Villain had failed to obtain. But he was also mildly impressed -- he didn't think his former apprentice had the guts for that kind of deception. But Sidekick had fully established by now that he was not Hero's friend or ally in this place, and Hero could expect no help from him.
Every time Sidekick visited it was completely silent, aside from the occasional quiet flipping of a page in Sidekick's latest book. He loved to read.
But precisely one day after a week, that routine changed, because Hero was rambling boredly like usual until he said something that actually caught Sidekick’s attention, finally eliciting a response from the teenager.
"You know, I can't help wondering how much of your loyalty is genuine, and how much of it Villain is making you feel. His influence runs pretty deep, doesn't it?" Hero groused unhappily.
Sidekick frowned, finally entertaining the conversation for a moment and setting his book down. "What are you talking about?" he growled.
Hero's eyes widened with delight. "Oh, hold on, you don't know yet, do you? Well, this is going to be awkward."
Sidekick scowled. "I don't know what?"
"Villain's superpower.”
Sidekick furrowed his brows. He didn’t know Villain had one.
He didn’t want to give Hero the satisfaction of snagging his attention, but his curiosity won out in the end.
“Fine. Humor me. What is Villain’s superpower?” he groaned in annoyance.
“Pathokinesis. And do you know what that ability can do?” Hero’s smile turned vicious. “It’s the ability to influence a person’s mood and emotions. Someone with that gift can make you adore them, or hate a friend, or make you want to kill for them. It takes away your choice. You become a puppet on strings. He used it on me during the first interrogation. His powers are strong.”
“Why would I believe you?” Sidekick challenged. “After every lie you’ve told me in the past? How do I know you’re not just trying to drive another wedge between me and him?”
“You don't need to trust me. Go ahead and ask Villain yourself and see how he reacts. He has a terrible poker face. You don't have nearly as much free will in this place as you think.”

“You don't need to trust me. Go ahead and ask Villain yourself and see how he reacts. He has a terrible poker face. You don't have nearly as much free will in this place as you think.”
A knot of unease tightened in Sidekick’s gut. “Why wouldn’t he tell me about something like that? He hasn't kept secrets from me yet, and answers all my questions honestly when I ask them. I don’t want to make false accusations and break his trust by making him think I'd trust you over him. I don’t believe you. End of discussion.”
“He wouldn’t tell you about a power like that because he knows how sensitive you are,” Hero cooed mockingly. “He knows it would frighten you to think that for even a second, your bodily autonomy could be stripped away again as long as you're standing in his presence. That he could pull the strings and you’d be turned into a mindless toy again, just like you were for me. The thought is terrifying, is it not? Maybe he hasn’t told you because he doesn't want you to figure out he’s been manipulating you this whole time and playing with your emotions. At least when you were my apprentice, I was always open and honest about what I wanted from you. I didn’t play games. Maybe he wants to take advantage of you by using his powers, and not physical force like I did. You wouldn’t be able to tell him no if he wanted to violate you.”
Sidekick shuddered, reflecting on every moment he and Villain had spent together. The criminal had spent entire days teaching him how to tell someone no. Why go to all that effort if he could just mold Sidekick to his desires on a whim? It’s not like he could fight back. Yet another reason to doubt Hero’s words – there were plenty of opportunities for Villain to manipulate him if he did have ‘powers’, yet Sidekick had always felt himself around him.
But… if Villain could manipulate emotions… would he even be able to tell if something was amiss? Or would he always feel exactly the way Villain wanted him to?
No, Sidekick scolded harshly, forcing the doubt from his mind. Villain encouraged him to make his own choices. He was always about autonomy. And after their discussion yesterday about his past, he’d have even more reason to stick to those morals, wouldn’t he? After experiencing being on the vulnerable side of an attack? He’d said he wanted to create a safe space to heal…
But ‘safe’ can coexist with manipulation, his mind whispered nastily. They aren't mutually exclusive. He could technically be waiting for you to heal so he wouldn’t have a BROKEN toy to play with…
Sidekick glared angrily at Hero, who only smirked in return.
"Don't you get it, Sidekick? Villain can make you feel ANY way he wants," he laughed coldly. "Not very 'free will' oriented of him, is it?”
“Enough,” Sidekick barked, and abruptly stood up, aggressively snatching his book in a hand. “I hate you. Haven't you taken enough from me?? You are NOT taking Villain away too. He’s treated me better than you ever did. I won’t jeopardize our friendship to play detective. You can’t make me doubt him.”
“You speak of him as if he’s your property,” Hero chuckled. “Something I can take away. Did you get that perspective from me, hmm? I guess you really do become like the people you exist around. You ran away from one master and sold your body to the next closest thing you could find like the dirty little–”
Sidekick clamped his hands over his ears to miss the vile word he knew was coming, only catching the end of his sentence.
“--you are. “
“I’m done listening to you,” Sidekick snapped, and whirled around to storm out of the room.
Hero’s haunting laughter echoed behind him, sending a chill through his bones.
“I will enjoy watching the fireworks when you discover the truth about Villan,” he called after him. “Who knows, maybe you’ll run back to me once you realize he doesn’t care about you as much as I do. I’d welcome you with open arms.”
“Never,” Sidekick snarled, and slammed the room’s door shut behind him.
But... What if Hero is RIGHT? His mind echoed in the silence that followed. What then?
“One of the most amazing things that can happen is finding someone who sees everything you are and won’t let you be anything less. They see the potential of you. They see endless possibilities. And through their eyes, you start to see yourself the same way. As someone who matters. As someone who can make a difference in this world.”
“It’s nice to see that you’ve never let your dyslexia stop you from achieving your rank, but you can ask one of your subordinates to act as a scribe for your reports. Or we can make other accommodations for you, if you’d prefer.”
“Oh fuck, am I dyslexic? When did that happen?”
“At birth, I think.”
“Literally no one’s ever said anything before. Do other people not see words like this?”
if you pitched goncharov vs the dangerous crow boy (who destroys plastic) alongside one another to an outside person and asked them to choose which one was a tumblr fever dream and which one was a real thing published in the real world. i do not think they would choose correctly
