why do i do this

well. what can we do, except try to do better? Trying this sm thing again after years away. Mainly posting warhammer and first law stuff as well as random stories/encounters from my job at a local game store.

life got crazy. work has been intense but in the 11th months I’ve been there and management position was created for me the store DOUBLED its sales and has a community. I weeded out problematic staff and have an amazing team. I love being able to share the love of hobbies to others and creating a safe space to hang out and play/paint.

however, I do get tired. I’m disabled so I do end up sick more than I’d like. anyway- got off at 3pm on Monday and not in till Wednesday so booked two nights at an area hotel (I don’t have much privacy/space having moved back to help aging parents.

Brought some books and games. Almost brought my death company to work on- glad I didn’t- the lighting sucks.

Hope folks have been good and will try to get better.

today, the owner was visiting the store.

it was a pretty casual visit and it was a slow day so we kept getting off-track and talking about random things.

what he said will now and forever live rent-free in my head.

after affirming how much I have added to the store and his family's business he discussed how when it comes to staffing they go out of their way to hire people who tend to be stigmatized and have more difficulty with jobs, be it a neurodivergence thing, LD, etc.

He's going on and on, giving examples of how it has worked and other times when people weren't capable or took advantage of it.

But I'm not listening.

All the while I'm thinking

been a weird week and using tumblr like an old-fashioned, circa early-2000s livejournal.

a few months back another game store tried to poach me. I was humbled but turned it down. While I love the store, I don’t think it would’ve been the best fit.

This week I had two unsolicited offers: one to manage a restaurant, the other for security (I have a few degrees in CJ/investigation but never worked the field)

Today I was off and my game group cancelled so I went to a FLGS I haven’t had a chance to visit in a bit. I’m friendly with managers and they inquired on how I was, mentioning they’d heard I’d turned the store im at around. We talked more, then I was asked what it would take for me to leave and come to their store, ultimately offering me more money, less responsibility, more agency, and promising me a paint night to run, as well as a guaranteed minimum 3 days off a week.

I have a lot to think about. I love my job but since promotion I’ve had zero time, been working off the clock(told not to but then expected to do certain things because when I’m in store I’m the “face” of it as per owners and there’s only so much you can spread out and we’re still on a skeleton crew… 3 employees including me and most weeks one is off so two of us running the store,) and only have so much control: I’m listened to to some degree but not as I should be since the owner isn’t local and rarely visits while I’m there every day.

I’m also very bad with guilt so I kind of think I know what I want to do/should do but feel like a mega dick about it.

my Artel W Order came in today. This time I picked up more of Ravenor’s team. I want to modify the new 40K inquisition kill team and swap it out with Ravenor’s for casual play.

This round I picked up Patience Kys(Agent Virtue,) Carl Thonius(Interrogator Karl,) and Wystan Frauka(Agent Blank.) Picked up Ravenor (Mr. Chair) already (as well as Cherubael from Eisenhorn series just because he was so awesome.)

Can’t wait to share progress!!!! I picked up two Ravenor’s and Carl’s to do each option (didn’t want to magnetize in this instance.)

going back to paint and finish stuff I started like 4 months ago is kind of weird and I’m trying not to lose it and strip everything and start over because I’ve already spent too much time and want to focus on other projects AND actually finish some units and maybeeee enough points to actually PLAY??!

and started basing my daemonhost from ArtelW. going to be a fun little project as I gather some proxies for my inquisition kill team… I have ashes of faith but really love the ArtelW inquisition models.

holy moly, been a second.

past month has been an absolute ride at work since staffing change, addition of in-house management, and subsequently being made in-house manager.

past couple of weeks have barely even had a chance to paint so tonight’s opportunity was amazing… even if I don’t want to admit how many hours I’ve put into a SINGLE cultist. I AM working to complete her though as opposed to having piles of partially painted/constructed models because I lack the confidence in my skills so instead of doing crappy they’re just never complete.

I made this appointment a year ago after planning a year. Artist wait and mom’s health meant I finally got started this past Wednesday. Originally was doing arm, was too self conscious for my neck but I got brave and am so happy.

First tattoo in a decade outside of my Night Lords stick and poke.

Tapped out after two hours because I’m lame. Next session scheduled and will be ongoing. Along with the hourglass eye there’s going to be a banner/wreath of spell components, whatever is in the ray of the eye will be decayed while the borders will be living and cover my edgelord y-incision piece from when I was 19. Depending on balance there may be a piece of parchment with “shirak”

I can’t wait to see how it progresses. The same day it was announced the artist is in the top five of a “Best of” in region out of dozens.

I have not disappeared into my recluse hole, rather disappeared into a work hole.

work has been chaotic and had some hard decisions to make, never expecting the owners (technically owner… and his family) to immediately take action… as well as create a new, on-site manager position… and promote me.

I’m beyond honored and it’s one step closer to living my ultimate dream but is close enough that I feel like the luckiest person ever: running a FLGS. while it’s not mine, the owner-family takes my considerations and has done so since day one. They listen and we’re on the same page when it comes to fostering a community and catering to our gaming community. We want to and intend to stand out. Along with filling in the cracks and damage that has come to light I’m so excited to leading the team.

My schedule has been a bit wild till we get a new hire but will be posting some new projects soon! Hope everyone is well!

so if anyone is reading this i ask you for a favor if you have access to facebook.

i want to surprise my employer with a bunch of reactions to a post i made earlier that just showed the new Horus Heresy tank releasing today with the others i had.

i asked people to react accordingly with the angry emoji if they were team hours, sad emoji for team emperor and go full chaotic with any other emoji if you were just somewhere else.

pretty solid the owners want me to get the new Star Wars: Shatterpoint core set ready for store events in time for the June release.

It will definitely be a brief vacation from the usual grimdark.

I’ve been wanting Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon and I found out the FLGS I work at went all in with the upcoming retail release so I picked up a few things already (and intend to get the rest)

Just getting into board games so I don’t go all out like this regularly… well outside of 40k.

But even if I wasn’t playing it I wouldve wanted this big, sexy model. Going to clean up mould lines and prime and update progress. I want it grim and dark and grimy and morally reprehensible.

been a while. work has gotten crazy busy. the owner listened to my suggestions and we’re implementing them and he gave me authorization to control their facebook, which had infrequent updates and zero engagement. It’s a challenge but I’m enjoying it.

picked up more recast primarchs. I now have seven. The unlabeled is Horus Ascended. Konrad is missing because he’s in the garage drying.

Randomly, I received a message from a former Red Shirt who I helped get the Lion a few weeks ago. Between my presence on store’s Facebook page and members of similar local groups I wasn’t difficult to confirm (and I’m sort of prominent in appearance.) apparently he appreciated I wasn’t a dick to him and how he dislikes the trope of game store employees. Since my page is public he saw some of my current stuff and after I asked how the Lion is looking he challenged me to mutually cheerlead the other into finishing our primarchs (specifically my Horus) instead of starting a dozen separate projects.

To be fair I ended up working on Curze first as Horus is was more intricate and I’ve only painted resin like WizKids or Reaper. I have built and painted it.

I debated on what color to prime him and probably should’ve done his body black with the rest wraith bone (it is not that dingy yellow. That’s my lamp.)

I’m already looking at one more practice run with Mortarion.

This is already super long. Next time I’ll share the Curse of Curze’s hand.

found my first painted mini.

I remember being so proud. I was also so new at this I believed Reaper’s packaging that no priming was necessary.

I want to repaint it but intend to keep it to remember my first mini.

The next one came not too long after. It’s my second PC, Februus. Wish I could find Kalma, my first; she’s somewhere. It’s also funny I didn’t even attempt the face lol.

The tail fell off, I have to fix it. It was altered to be stumpy, as if poorly amputated.

Speaking of amputated. I was pulling at the arm too much to reach in and it broke. I was lamenting as my oh-so-glorious paint job was almost done and didn’t want to start over that I joked maybe Februus could lose his arm. A couple sessions later the party was in a bind and a sacrifice could be made for safe passage.

That was when Februus’ arm got ripped off and consumed (to avoid any magical healing.) it worked out great for character arc purposes.

There’s so many takeaways, one being thank god I discovered matte coats. Also, layering. And highlighting. Most importantly, enjoying the hobby is key and with each piece you grow and learn.
