Hello! I'm InsaneWolf, and I'm an Ao3 writer! My Ao3 username is insanewolf. Although, I'm super busy nowadays I thought maybe this would help me keep up with fandom stuff. I guess.
Idk, tumblr is just fun and writing is also fun and they seem to mix pretty well so...
Anyway, rn im hyperfixated on Wild Kratts and am losing it over all the AUs I'm seeing here. So much so that I'm writing a WK fic, (ignoring the other 3 fics I have that are WIPs hehe...)
I'm in a ton of other fandoms too so posts will totally be random but that's ADHD for you
If I were to post my AU/ideas. The ones I have in my notes app, I wonder if that would make me want to write them more or not. Hmmm...
I'm writing a long WK fic right now. I'm halfway through and it's hit 10k words now? Slowly but surely I'm finishing it.
But as that's happening (and the vampire one was spur of the moment) I'm curious about my other ideas. Some are just like... sentences. Others are actually fleshed out with a potential plot.
refrigerated blood can keep for 21 days before degradation BUT frozen blood can keep for 36 months and must be used within 24 hours of thawing.
Hope that helps your vampire kratt stuff
YES! But that brings up the question. Where are they keeping refrigerated and or frozen blood bags on the Tortuga? The crew has got to see this and be like, either it's for the animals, or they just have it in their med bay and they just have a lot of it. They're like, "Yeah, if any of us gets seriously hurt, we have plenty of blood!"
But of course you'll get the suspicion of, "Why are we losing blood when no one has been seriously injured?"
A normal task would be to check the blood and keep a fresh, up-to-date count of it. Like restocking medical supplies. But I'm just imagining Koki counting and there's like, 3-5 bags missing. Immediately she's worried. Someone is hurt. But when she looks at which bags are missing, it's animal blood. (Ignore the fact that if they were to have animal blood, everything would need to be species specific, so they'd have a TON of blood.)
And it's the blood of an animal they have not seen in a while. When she goes to ask around, one of the brothers just says, "It went bad."
Sure... okay. But that is like... my job? I'm trained for hazmat? I do this every few days/weeks. Huh?
But this happens once in a while, so maybe the brothers are just... really concerned about the quality of their blood storage? But one day, some human bags are missing. And not the normal 3-5. 10 or more are just... gone. And they're all mostly the same type. Type A. (Who on this ship is Type A? Does that even really matter?)
This starts the alarm bells, and when everyone is awake, there are no Kratt brothers in sight.
Koki, Aviva, and Jimmy are panicky searching for them. They can't find them on the ship. They can't track their creature pods. And the security on the Tortuga shows no one entering or leaving either the ship or the med bay.
Has anyone ever just... vampires? Like, I am obsessed with vampires. I don't know why, I just think the concept is so cool and you can do so many different things with it. And so every fandom that I join there's got to be some vampires. And I was at work earlier today and for some random reason just thought... What if the Kratt brothers were vampires but nobody knew. Like everything in the show is the exact same. The only difference is that the Kratt Brothers are vampires. That's it. That's all I want.
I know there's this whole thing with Zack being a vampire but I mean come on guys. That's so not original bro. It's literally black and red that's his whole shtick. Also he was literally a vampire in one of the episodes.
But as I was doing stuff I was thinking about how it would work. Logically, the brothers wouldn't drink blood from people. They're too nice for that. But also the alternative in most stories is drinking from animals but they wouldn't do that either because that's also their whole thing. Saving animals. So what would they do??
I was thinking maybe they'd go to blood banks or something but like they're constantly traveling in the Tortuga. And going to a blood bank in a country that doesn't have blood banks or a good hospital system with blood banks is not very viable, especially when they're traveling constantly. (I mean most of the time they're just in the middle of the Amazon rainforest so definitely not any blood banks around there.) So then I was thinking maybe they drank the blood from already dead animals? But that blood would have to be, like, 100% fresh. That animal just freaking died. But also when are you around a newly dead animal?
And of course there's no like sciency answer as to why vampires need to drink blood. So maybe they don't drink blood and they just eat a frick ton of iron. Because hemoglobin but also oxygen and there's a weird science theory of them drinking blood to replace dead cells? But they're scientists? I don't normally picture vampires being dead. More like a virus kind of thing but whatever works.
As you could probably see, I know a lot about vampire lore for no reason. Because this is one of my niche little obsessions. But I would like you to picture Martin and Chris in the middle of like the North American woods as just tiny little bats in the middle of the night and they're just having a good time.
*Baby voice* They're just cute little babies just having a good little time flying around and playing tag. Oh my God look how cute and baby they are. (I'm not sorry)
There's also the potential for angst because they're keeping a secret from the team that's kind of scary. You could do a crazy fun thing with one of the brothers being like we should tell them and the other one be like no, we can't tell them they hate us for it. They'd think we're weird. (Or like, things happen that creep the crew out and it's like a mystery novel. What is this, what's happening, why did he just do/say that? And the crew just see vampire-ish things happen and have no idea it's vampires so they just either think, creature OR "That's just the Kratt brothers for you. Those weirdos. (affectionate)).
But also you can get some animal instincts in here because bats and maybe vampires specifically have bond instincts. Like sire and hatchling kind of thing, but they're brothers, so more familial. They purr or something (that's so unrealistic). Like vampires aren't real. You can do a ton of just random stuff with this, who cares!?.
This isn't a new (or original) idea, but I just haven't seen anything with the Kratts being vampires apart from Chris as the occasional vampire bat from Creepy Creatures. (Or just, any mythical thing. I've defiantly seen siren/mermaid stuff. And like demigod/chimera things.) I need some fan art or a little one shot or something!!! And if I were to write this myself I would have to put it on the long list of things that I am currently wanting to write and let me tell you something. This list is getting unreasonably long. (And I have written a lot of vampire stuff before. This is not my first bat rodeo!)
With all these great AUs in the WK fandom, I'm surprised no one has wrote a fic that is basically this post. Like, a fic with canon WK just meeting all their AU alternates would go so hard. I would read that. (I'd also write it but I have way too many ideas and literally no time for just mine.)
Tumblr is a place to express yourself, discover yourself, and bond over the stuff you love. It's where your interests connect you with your
Can I just rant for a bit?
Some backstory for this: I've been slowly watching Wild Kratts for the last month and a half? I watched it a lot when I was younger, but who remembers entire episodes of TV when you are like 8ish? I love animals, and do remember seeing these brothers and their adventures, but not in great detail.
I got into this fandom because I saw a YT video by @elmushterri about rewriting Wild Kratts and seeing their thumbnail I literally went, "Wait a minute... aren't those the Zoboomafoo guys? I remember that show and the animated one!" So I watched it.
Low and behold, I was so interested in their rewrite, and just watching their video re-remembering the show, I had to rewatch it. Got back into Tumblr, saw the small fandom was still alive with AUs and art, and here I am.
But oh my gosh, this show is just... so much more? Animated educational kids' show that teaches about animals. (And I love, love, animals. They are really the only thing I can draw accurately.) Basically, what it says on the tin, but the themes and how they write episodes and everything they talk about is so complex if you think about it.
I've seen so many posts talking about the lack of toxic masculinity by @wildhorizon, the girls being engineers (Let's go! I'm a female engineer!) in a post from @gloomy-girlypop, and just so many others. Even as a kids' show, it is so refreshing because of the constant socially acceptable (but stereotyped and outdated) themes ingrained in television aimed at older audiences.
The brothers write episodes themselves, and you can really tell. They have their own styles, and they play and joke with each other's animated counterparts. But not all the episodes are written just by them, or by either of them at all. Chris Roy helps write episodes, and Eva Almos wrote some of the earlier ones as well.
But further into the show, it's exclusively the brothers writing. And from watching season 1 to mid-season 6, the brothers' characters have begun to lean away from those exaggerated TV-ivied personalities into their real selves.
In season 1, Eva wrote 11 of the 40 episodes. And in those episodes, the brothers' differences are inflated a little for the screen. Like in 'Tazzy Chris', Chris and Martin argue more (good-naturedly, of course) and annoy each other like siblings do in shows. And in most of the episodes Eva wrote, the major conflict is less about villains and more about the brothers' mistakes.
The brothers will let an elephant wander onto the Tortuga, or a suit will malfunction, and then a villain will capitalize on that to advance their evil plot. It makes the show more grounded in reality (but in that sitcom-TV style we know so well), while the brothers' episodes are more, "Villains are evil, we must stop them!"
But also, it's just the brothers' passion for animals and conservation and teaching children about the world around them that shines through later on. Their real dynamic working with each other and their deep love for this is what has the show. It's heart in a sense.
Sorry, I think I really got off topic, but I just really wanted to say something about how this show is really changing my brain at the moment. (And the fandom is just so nice, guys!) At this point in my life, I've never been so ingrained in technology. All I do now is study electricity, mechanics, physics, write papers on a laptop, calculate particle movement, solve circuits for voltage and current, etc, etc, etc. (And my brain is all technology, and nature is the marvel of natural engineering we've based everything I'm learning on. It started somewhere, and both sides of my thoughts are shaking hands and going, "This is where it's at. This is where you've come from.")
This show just reignited that love for nature I had growing up, and I've genuinely learned a lot about animals I've known and seen forever, and about ones that I've never even heard of. I took a trip this weekend to a remote town surrounded by mountains and nature with a great camera, and literally all my pictures have nature as the focus. Trees and rivers and cattle and bugs and weather and flowers and deer and on and on. I took over a thousand photos in four days. And the whole time all I was saying in my head whenever I saw an animal was "Creature Adventure!"
Anyway, this has gotten long. My bad. But please, keep on creature adventuing and we'll see each other on the creature trail!
God that is so cheesy I'm so sorry.

More doodles!! It is all Chris as a bat, but! Different bats! (Sorry Martin. Every time I try to draw you I make you look like garbage. I'll practice more I swear!)
But we got a vampire bat, a little brown bat, and a fruit bat! 🦇 They are so cute I love love love bats! I see them in the summer near dusk. They swoop down to drink water out of my pool. And the ones at my local zoo are ADORABLE!!! Their little faces I just... Ksishwkajdjsizjhdaohzka!!!!!!
Very happy about the WK bat episode. I want more thou. Maybe I fix that with a bat fic. (Stop I don't need more WIPs PLEASE all month I've just been getting ideas that are amazing but I have no time please shush!!!)
We got Chris in a tree, ocelot Chris ready to pounce, cheetah Martin, honey badger Chris and honey guide Martin, and finally the obligatory tazzy Chris. Also a random bee cause I saw one in the store on some candy packaging and it was fat and cute.
My favorite is the honey badger/honey guide. Chris is listening intently to his brother. Whether he's singing or just rambling, I couldn't tell you.
The Tortuga is literally a nightmare to comprehend. Every episode, each door goes somewhere completely different!!! Like, what do you mean this door opens straight to the outside!?
I thought it went to like... idk the garage!? They've literally have walked out this door to go somewhere INSIDE the shell.
This is the same episode (Komodo Dragon) and that door is right next to the same fridge, and it has HALLWAYS in it!!!
Omg. I'm losing it. This is hilarious. I love that every door just goes where ever it need to go to get the job done! It's like... a magic house! But a turtle ship that flies! Honestly, I couldn't care less about it being accurate, but it's just so funny to think that the Tortuga is like Howl's Castle (the front door) and the TARDIS in Doctor Who.
I was thinking of making my own little map/layout of the ship just for fun, but this is just funnier. The gang have created a ship that changes where doors go (does this mean the Tortuga is alive?).
HC: The Tortuga is a living creature made of metal and houses these little eccentric creatures that constantly go on adventures and get in trouble and they don't seem to realize that she helps them by moving what doors go to! (Now I'm thinking of that song by Imogen Heap called "Neglected Space").
The Tortuga protects the crew and like, shifts things around to help them out. Like, Jimmy's sleeping in his chair and while on autopilot the winds pick up and she tilts a bit so that the turbulence doesn't knock him off the chair.
Or at night when they are are sleeping in their hammocks she rocks! Making the hammocks sway slightly back and forth!
Okay I couldn't wait. First posted Wild Kratts fic! YAY!
It's a small one-shot about the color wand from "The Colors of China" episode having some... adverse effects. But, not during or after the episode itself.
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the
Organization for Transformative Works
This isn't my first WK Fic (I am technically still working on that one as it's pretty long) but, I got side tracked. The episode Colors of China? Yea, gave me a one-shot idea I could not pass on and so I wrote that. Almost 3k words. Some hurt/comfort and brotherly moments. Will post within the week.
i am being overwhelmed by my own thoughts and somehow enjoying it
Is it just me, or does this whole clip here just feel different? Like, genuine brother vibes. Maybe its the way they animated it. With Chris up in the tree looking down at Martin being silly. It's not as flat(?) as other episodes. We actually got some depth here instead of the brothers just standing next to each other.
Their models weren't as ridged. Chris's face moves in 3D! Multiple times! And in both horizontal and vertical directions, with changing facial expressions. And Martin's subtle movements with the monkey on him, and when it jumps off. Am i being a bit crazy atm? Probably. But idk, this episode was just... more!
Also, Chris was breathing. After his laugh fest, he was actually BREATHING! I immediately noticed his chest moving up and down and I was a bit freaked out about it. It caught me off guard. But it was really refreshing to see some actual movement that wasn't just the whole model. Some secondary motion was going down!
This whole episode just by itself is just gorgeous! Animation wise and color. They really saturated the colors so they would pop more with the black and white. (Oh no, brain, don't you do it. Not another fic idea!)
Why does my brain not want to write the fic I've been working on for the last week but the moment I listen to ANY song its like-
"HERE IS 15 MORE FIC IDEAS THAT YOU MUST WRITE DOWN NOW OR ELSE YOU WILL FORGET THEM!"
I just want to write the one I had at the beginning! Why!!!!!
Not me spending most of my writing time researching a very specific phenomenon for a small little scene that could totally just not need research but I want to make it accurate anyway
Everything is just black under blue light! NO FUN!!!!!!
