@insanityintensifies
ao3 comments will be like “i like this line of your fic” and my reply will be like “fantastic thank you here’s my entire thought process about how i ended up with that particular line and also an outline for another fic i have and fifteen resources i used to research 1980s politics” and nobody asked for that chill
i asked for that
No we 100% asked for that.
Definitely asked for that, and also here’s the other three dozen lines from your fic that I liked and the outline for the fic they inspired me to write plus some extra character meta that at this point is only tangentially related to your fic but was definitely inspired by those 1980s politics resources and -
Yep.
This is literally how I made most of my fandom besties.
Listen…
Fic Commenters: If you ever want to make a comment going on depth about a part of a fic that stood out to you, but think “does the author really want to read all this?” The answer is YES! YES WE DO WANT TO READ ALL THAT!!!!
Fic authors: If you ever see a comment that makes you want to explain your thought process behind your writing, and you think “does the commenter really want to read all this?” The answer is YES! YES WE DO WANT TO READ ALL THAT!!!
like i'm sorry but we as a fandom have to stay firm on our anti-AI values. we cannot suddenly start giving AI a pass when it's something we "want to see" like destiel kisses. it's not suddenly fine. we're not going to start using AI to make fanfic scenes come to life or audio AI to make characters "say" stuff we want to hear. you have GOT to be firm on your anti-AI stance. if you start making exceptions then suddenly anything will fly. fandom is for real art and creations made by real people. no AI fanfics. no AI art. no AI rendered "bonus" scenes. no AI audio. none of it has a place here.
this includes c.ai btw. I literally do not care if it “helps you write”. You can ask someone with experience in writing for help. You don’t. Need. The robot. A human’s advice will ALWAYS be better than the advice of a robot.
https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/13/books/review/831-stories-romance.html
The latest attempt to co-opt and monetize fandom by people who know nothing about it just got fawning coverage in the New York Times! Of course it did, because the NYT is trash, and because white women venture capitalists with social connections get this kind of attention.
Two women with no experience in publishing or editing, and who only started reading romance novels a few years ago, have received more than $4.5m in VC funding thanks to such amazing ideas as:
Readers of romance novels want plain covers so no one knows they're reading yucky girl books; they want identikit colour-blocked books that can be "brandished like fashion accessories" (I know I want to purchase books published by people who sneer at my gauche tastes!)
Recruiting authors who aren't romance writers (who needs knowledge of and affection for the genre when you can have literary cred amirite ladies)
Shilling "curated" merchandise related to the books ("the real version of a fictional necklace pivotal to the plot sold online for $195")
No royalties to authors, apparently
No physical descriptions of the characters. (“When you leave out those physical descriptors, it does open the opportunity for people to personalize stories,” Mazur said." Or does it create bland-as-fuck y/n works that default to the most normative possible characters?)
"Self-actualized" protagonists only
But wait, there's more! Our insufferable founders have also hit on an idea that apparently no one in the history of publishing has ever thought of before.
Wowwww. Interconnected works of fiction, serialised to some extent, centering romantic relationships and drawing on a shared setting or premise—why has no one thought of this before? We could call it... a series.
You also can't deliberately engineer something that creates a fandom, folks. But they're clearly trying to do just that. First, they have a page on their website which they use to host "fan fiction" about their books. (My sense is these are all better understood as commissioned tie-in short stories.)
(As an aside: their website is also eye-searingly awful. Dark pink text on a bright pink background? Who hurt you as a child?)
Then they're cross-posting these works to @ao3org, with such entirely natural and organic-sounding summaries as "831 Stories is a new romantic fiction company that prioritizes pleasure reading and celebrates the genre’s joyful, enthusiastic fans."
How do you do fellow kids dot gif.
Anyway, I hate these shallow grifters and how they and their ilk keep trying to monetise and bastardise a space of shared communal creativity, and what they do to my blood pressure and any lingering shreds of faith in humanity, and I am reporting them to AO3 for TOS violations.

If I was desperate for kudos I would not be out here posting villain ships, minor character rarepairs, and other deeply unpopular ships.
I know how to write popular fic. I know how to farm kudos. That's not what I'm here for.
"Readers need to remember that authors don't know a reader liked their fic unless the reader tells them by leaving a kudos or a comment" does not mean "waahhh waahhh I need attention!"
It means "even if writers write purely for themselves, if you don't bother to interact with writers when you do enjoy their work, they might stop posting and just keep their work to themselves."
"If you enjoy a work you should kudos or comment" is not aimed at the people who aren't reading the fanfiction in question.
"If you enjoy a work you should kudos or comment" is not aimed at the people who did not enjoy the fanfiction in question.
"If you enjoy a work you should kudos or comment" is aimed at people who read a fanfiction, enjoyed it, and then didn't bother to even do the bare minimum to share their excitement about it with the work's creator, even though that excitement is literally the only thing they get in return for posting their work.
Fanfiction authors write because they enjoy writing. They post because they want to form a connection with the people who enjoyed their work.
This is not an attempt to scold anyone, I literally don't care if I get kudos or not. It's simply an attempt to remind people that fanfiction is a community, and fan authors can't read your mind.

writing is hard but coming up with a cunty title and catchy summary will slay even god's strongest soldier
Not only should it be law that anything AI generated on the internet should be labelled as such but every website, app, and digital service should have a button I can click that removes any AI from my interactions with that site/service. I don't want your AI assistant I don't want your AI-generated ad copy I don't want this insidious little thing that has crept into so much of the internet that I can be using it without even realising or knowing. If you couldn't be bothered to have a human make it I can't be bothered to look at it sorry bye

"mmh did you know that creator you like also posts 🔞 content? did you know that? don't you think that's weird? don't you think we should keep this space-"
no. i don't.

" "I booked a front row seat to the devil's sacrament and you're blocking the view" is one banger of a thematic statement. Shirt material.
