Someone once beautifully said that although fighting ability does not guarantee the quality of making a female character well written
But let’s not act like in many cases that lack of said fighting ability is often exploited/utilized to 100% sideline female characters from having narrative complexity in action/battle oriented stories
Artists with less than a 100 followers watching artists with 100 k followers crash out over the algorithm not sharing their posts be like:
That moment when a fandom that boasts about having a piece of media that has a progressive creator/progressive themes spews hateful rhetoric to defend said themes and creator from mild criticism be like:
I hate in stories with large casts of characters that has a plot involving conflict or criticism with some form of societal exploitation you have fandoms justifying the poor/under utilization of these side cast/certain groups of characters with ‘well not every character needs to be fleshed out or explored! They’re not the main focus/protagonist! They just exist so you can see the world better/know it’s not empty!’
But it’s like do they really?
If a story criticizes a certain body/institution for seeing people as a means to an end but never gives its side cast much gravity/influence/aspirations outside of being a dressed up plot device that pretty much exists for like one fight, one exposition dump, one cheap shock death, etc- haven’t we lost the plot completely?
How is this story written/executed in any way that gives it a right to criticize? If anything isn’t it proving the very point it’s trying to argue against?
Because If a character exists for one purpose and one purpose only that does more for another character than their own- are they even really much of a character to begin with? Why make them into an actual person and not just say a magical mcguffin object that would more or less serve the same purpose without wasting as much paper/ink?
No but imagine how "funny" the Huggy Wuggy and Kissy Missy death scene would've been if Elliot ended up being the Prototype and not Ollie
His wife left him and now he's ruining some little kids' relationship

In terms of leadership Doey is by far the best leader in poppy playtime (yes. Even better than the prototype/poppy- arguably by a landslide)
Doey is hands down the most selfless leader out of the 3.
His whole thing is that he won’t throw away others to get what he wants- even if it’s the most efficient way to go about things. He wanted to LEAVE but he sacrificed his goals if it meant keeping the others alive.
He managed to keep all those little critters alive for years after the war even when the prototype and doctor were hunting him and the rest.
He set aside his own trauma to step up for those around him- and still believed they were worth more than their experiences/hardships
Even when poppy came with fairly unreasonable demands and very little transparency to her disappearance he still listened, helped and was opened to compromising with her.
HIS CRASHOUT WAS JUSTIFIED (albeit NOT at the player)
holy fucking shit yes! I think people forget that Poppy especially is NOT THE HERO. she isn't even a protagonist, really. She's the main character, which is a separate thing. And the prototype neglects basically everyone that follows him (I think catnap and maybe Preston if you squint are the exception) in favor of Poppy. The only character that is meant to be an example of an actually good and competent leader is Doey. He takes on the responsibility than Poppy and the prototype essentially brush off and I think it would have been fucking awesome if he survived and crashed out on Poppy in chapter 5 lol

Tbh the more I think about it- The more the real question isn’t who’s the best leader out of the 3 but who’s the worst lol (I’d say the prototype but poppy is a close second)
The prototypes horrendous bc I think he just wants to be??? Like I’m sorry after everything he can do I just can’t buy that he wouldn’t be a good leader if he genuinely wanted to.
And I’ll be honest- maybe it’s just bc I don’t care for doomed siblings tropes but I don’t really like the writing direction the prototypes character has taken in his obsession around poppy? Making his end goal/motivations being that of all things feels…a little lame? (At least to me) especially when there are so many other things it could’ve been that would’ve been but I digress-
And honestly a lot of the reveal Because it cheapens a lot of stuff and almost feels like a completely different character from the one we were told about in the earlier chapters
A lot of his complexity feels lost and Sure he did bad things but it didn’t feel like it was out of a short sighted selfishness??
Now he almost feels like a stereotypical one dimensional control freak tyrant who’s just crazy selfish and abusive to henchmen like what is there to like about the prototype in game? Why would anyone want to willingly follow him?
He went from being a mysterious person who did bad in the ‘lesser of two evils’ kinda way to someone who’s just being bad for the sake of being bad because he can be bad-
And then on the other hand
Poppy is pretty bad bc she doesn’t have what it takes to be a leader (she admits it herself) but won’t open up to the people around her, withholds info which is so unfair to the people who genuinely help you at the cost of their own lives???
It’s almost exploitative if you can trust people to risk and sacrifice for you but can’t give them the honesty of the situation that they arguably deserve to hear/know
Like you want me to believe that if she’d been honest with doey about her being overwhelmed as a leader, running away during the toy war and then getting imprisoned that he wouldn’t have had a shred of empathy and understanding towards her???
Doey at the very least deserved a good explanation especially since he’d proved himself capable, reliable and reasonable in many such instances.
I also agree on your point with poppy- but honestly at this point I do think the story has done her dirty- she gets very little screen time and sometimes the writing for her is just??? Off???
Like the presentation doesn’t match the complexity of the concept of her character- but once again that’s another can of worms
And I’m not saying this to hate on her because I’m like- yeah she’s pitiful and sad but am I the only one who understands why people both in and out game would be annoyed/frustrated with her?
Like you said any crash out Doey (and I’d argue the player or anyone in safe haven) would have against poppy is justified especially when the game more or less has giblet pretty much repeat Doeys point to poppy- which feels like rubbing salt in the wound???
I genuinely think if one character deserved redemption than it was doey

But you can always tell how good a story is written/executed by the quality/beliefs of fans it attracts
Like if a story is written with certain themes/messages but has a fandom that uses logic/views antithetical to those themes/messages to defend it then there’s a good chance that that’s more of a poorly written story vs the story just having a very large illiterate fan base
Like think about it what are the odds that if the story is well written that statistically it would just so happen to attract a group of very dumb people with conflicting views vs people who support and agree with those themes in the first place?

Genuine question why wasn’t the prototypes hunters brought up/mentioned sooner?
I remember reading once that a ppt dev said that huggy and the prototype are like Vader and sidious respectively
But I am I the only one who thinks the prototype is closer to Vader than huggy is?
-both grew up in abusive environments until they were ‘adopted’ (Anakin by the Jedi, Ollie by Ludwig)
-both grew close to elderly men who had ulterior motives (Anakin and palpatine, Ollie and Elliot Ludwig) ironically the agreement/purposes for both of these relationships was ultimately to save a female (a wife or sister from death)
-both later went on to kill said older guys too
-both were geniuses in their respective fields (which ironically involve engineering/robotics)
-both led rebellions to destroy the place they’d been adopted into
-both kill their ‘disciples’/students the minute they fail or stop being useful
-they’re both mixtures of man/machine
-both claim that their former identity is gone
-both love but still abuse family members and try to get them to join them
-both became the very thing they wanted to destroy
-both hurt the people who they ultimately tried to save/protect (Anakin choked Padme and the prototype cracked poppy’s face)

So, this occurred to me as I was workshopping another rant.
Ollie being suspicious was the point. Since Chapter 3's release, I have seen people complain that Ollie was obviously the Prototype and so there was no mystery. But, in my opinion, the players were supposed to be unsure about Ollie. Let's remember that Ollie was always supposed to be the Prototype, even before the rewrites. What the point of his identity being a mystery was was to create uncertainty. Was Ollie on our side? If he is the Prototype, why is he helping us? Is he the Prototype, if he warns us about him? You weren't supposed to blindly trust him, otherwise a lot of his lines in chapters 3 and 4 have no purpose. The reveal that Ollie was the Prototype is meant to be a "I knew it!" moment, after 2 chapters of uncertainty. And I mean, you don't introduce a new character you can't see and ALSO include an audio log showcasing the main bad guy can mimic voices in the same chapter, unless you want the player to notice it.
Playtime co: omg guys we’re losing money and are in the red!
Also playtime co: time to spend millions if not billions on employing these scientists/prison wardens/specialist extraction teams, funding a lot of science/research, covering up SEVERAL shady happenings/disappearances (that can’t be cheap) making our factory extra large with a ton of train stations and a whole underground network- eventually make a whole amusement park and second factory in Japan while setting this one guy named Harley sawyer who keeps turning children into unstable killing war machines with zero safety protocol for giggles! What could go wrong?

People keep on talking about how playtime CO’s size breaks their suspension of disbelief
Meanwhile I’m over here in awe at poppy’s consistent L taking per chapter (chapter 2- she ends up captured and crashes the train, chapter 3 - kissy missy gets attacked, chapter 4- her plan leads to the death of a TON of her Allies and the prototype revealed himself, chapter 5 she’s back to being captured (she got captured TWICE in one chapter) lost both kissy and the player, had her face shattered and turns out her goal of saving the orphans might’ve been in vain since she got out of the case)
It’s amazing. I genuinely feel bad for her.
