We Americans claim to be a peace-loving people. We hate bloodshed; we are opposed to violence. Yet we go into spasms of joy over the possibility of projecting dynamite bombs from flying machines upon helpless citizens. We are ready to hang, electrocute, or lynch anyone, who, from economic necessity, will risk his own life in the attempt upon that of some industrial magnate. Yet our hearts swell with pride at the thought that America is becoming the most powerful nation on earth, and that it will eventually plant her iron foot on the necks of all other nations. Such is the logic of patriotism.
Emma Goldman, “Patriotism, a Menace to Liberty” (1911)
WASHINGTON—Saying that nothing in his journalism career could possibly have prepared him for this, Politico chief White House correspondent Mike Allen wondered Thursday where to mention getting yelled at by the president of the United States in an article he was writing. “I can’t put it in the lede, of course, but I probably should at least bring up the fact that the commander-in-chief took nearly a full minute out of the press conference just to ream me out,” said Allen, adding that while he was intensely uncomfortable at the thought of inserting himself into his own piece, the lengthy, belittling tirade was an objectively newsworthy moment deserving a full paragraph or even the focus of an entire story. “God, how do I even refer to myself in this? It’s weird if I say ‘The president then yelled at a reporter from Politico,’ but I also can’t say ‘And then the president yelled at me.’ Jesus, do I also have to include him saying I should be fired?” At press time, Allen was relieved to learn that he would not have to face this dilemma again, as he would no longer be called upon in press conferences.
So Minnesotans showed the fuck up tonight (like we do) - thousands in the street protesting tr*mp’s latest executive disorders. And guess what happened? The old proverb “What if an emergency vehicle needs to get where it’s going” came to life, and the sea went silent and parted to allow it through (swiftly…literally the truck was going about as fast as, if not faster than, it would have been if there had been cars it needed to go around).
Please share this. This was a rare occurrence where an emergency vehicle needed to go through the route of a protest, when usually they have predetermined alternative routes, and it went completely fine. Also for the love of god, have more respect for firefighters/EMTs…they know how to do their jobs. They’re ready for anything, including working around protests.
So folks can stop using that tired old argument now (not that it was ever backed up by sources anyway).
This interview with Jared Kushner’s grandmother from 1982 is immensely relevant in 2017
If what happened at UC Berkeley makes you uncomfortable, I invite you to be in that discomfort for a while. If what happened at UC Berkeley gets you more riled up than the right wing Trump supporting Alt-Right Nazi terrorist in Quebec City who opened fire on a Mosque and killed six people, just a few days ago, I invite you to ask why that is. We are living in a time when Steven Bannon, a white nationalist (read white supremacist), is one of the most powerful people on the planet, and is unleashing the full power of the Federal government to unleash a racist anti-working class agenda on the planet. And is doing so while he and Trump give a green light to vigilante right wing violence that hurts and kills people and terrorizes our communities. It’s crucial to remember that no one looks back at Germany during the rise of the Nazis and says, “well at least they respected the Nazi’s freedom of speech”. They say, “Never Again”. Again, is here.“

As always though, use should ALWAYS be taken in context. For example the Valknot symbol that looks like three intersecting triangles is also used by people who practice Asatru or Odinism, because nazis love using ancient European imagery.

A long time ago, one writer warned us that [a then-Presidential candidate] was a man who believed in nothing, save that he should be president. That he should be in charge, and that nothing else mattered. We have proof of this, too late. It is said that nobody becomes president just to play with the lives of others. If we valued history more, we would have seen this for the lie it is. Some people want to rule just to rule. Some people pick the wings off flies just to see what happens.
Warren Ellis’ analysis of the Smiler has never been more relevant than it is in the days of Trump. (via mandiblebones)

We now live in an era when major news outlets have to debate whether the President of the United States is willfully lying or merely spewing unknowing falsehoods
This is not normal.
Badlands National Park defied Trump by tweeting climate facts — and was quickly silenced
On Tuesday, the official Twitter account of the Badlands National Park went rogue amid the efforts of Trump’s administration to impose a communications blackout at several major government agencies.
The account posted several facts about the role of mass human industrial activity on the global climate, a link that is near-universally agreed upon by scientists.
The Trump administration’s blackout has so far only been reported to apply at the Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Agriculture, Health and Human Services Department and National Institutes of Health,
But the tweets from the Badlands account disappeared several hours after they were posted.
The Daily Beast’s Kelly Weill that when she called the Badlands National Park the “main phone line repeatedly failed,” while emails bounced back.
Other agencies, such as NASA’s climate division, have continued tweeting about the climate unabated. Read more

If Twitter accounts fall silent in the woods, can they still make a sound? Turns out, yes — lots.
Tuesday afternoon, a new Twitter account called “AltUSNatParkService” appeared and began tweeting out facts about climate change, support for the National Parks and comments in opposition of President Trump, who has called climate change a hoax created by China.
All this came in response to the news of new orders to limit outward contact with the public, including bans on social media postings, at the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Interior Department, which oversees the National Park Service. The EPA was ordered to enact a temporary media blackout as the Trump administration transitions its team into the agency roles.
