Microsoft warns Windows 11 agentic OS may face Xpia malware risks

Microsoft is pushing ahead with its plan to add agentic capabilities to Windows 11, but issued a security warning for anyone who is interest

Microsoft has issued an important warning about its upcoming agentic AI capabilities that are coming soon to Windows 11. In a new support document, the company warns that users should "only enable this feature if you understand the security implications," and has confirmed that because of the potential dangers, it'll be off by default.

For months, Microsoft has teased that Windows 11 would slowly evolve into an agentic OS, much to the dismay of users online. Still, the company has pushed ahead with its vision, and we're now at a point where the first truly agentic capabilities are launching on the platform.

"This setting can only be enabled by an administrator user of the device and once enabled, it’s enabled for all users on the device including other administrators and standard users," Microsoft confirms. When enabled, Windows will create local user accounts for different AI agents, which will have access to your personal user folder.

"Agentic accounts have limited access to your user profile directory (C:\Users\username\) while operating in the agent workspace. If an agent needs access to files in that directory, Windows grants read and write access to the following known folders: Documents, Downloads, Desktop, Videos, Pictures, Music when the setting is enabled."

Yesterday, Microsoft published a support document that outlined how AI agents are going to work on Windows 11, utilizing a new agentic workspace that will allow AI-powered apps to complete tasks on your behalf. These agents will operate in their own secure desktop environment, but with access to your apps and files.

As such, the company warns that these agentic capabilities aren't without risk. "AI applications introduce novel security risks, such as cross-prompt injection (XPIA), where malicious content embedded in UI elements or documents can override agent instructions, leading to unintended actions like data exfiltration or malware installation."

Because of this, the company has outlined a number of design principles that it wants to follow when it comes to agentic experiences on Windows, including ensuring the AI is always observable, and that any decisions it wants to make must be approved by a human first. "Agents must be able to produce logs outlining their activities. Windows should be able to verify these actions with a tamper-evident audit log."

The company says the first preview builds of Windows 11 with agentic capabilities are rolling out to Insiders as of yesterday, though there are currently no AI apps that support it. Microsoft has already confirmed that Copilot will soon be able to utilize agentic workspaces on Windows 11, and other AI apps are expected to follow.

Crawling out of my hole to remind people that with this current update to Firefox (version 144) they've gone and dumped in their lot with a buncha lil AI tools, namely Perplexity as a new search engine.

So if the sound of that leaves your mouth tasting of tar, here's what you want to do:

In the url bar, type in about:config

It'll give you a big scary warning page that you might poke holes in your browser. Good. You want to do that. Click continue.

One by one, you're going to need to put each of these into the search bar in the page, not up top:

Each of these are gonna have a lil toggle icon on the right hand side that looks like a funky double-ended arrow. Click that and the value next to it should change to false. It all auto saves as you go. Some of these might already be set to false by default and that's peachy.

The next best thing you can do for yourself is to set your default search engine to udm14 or Qwant, but for now, we're just tidying the garden a lil bit.

I hate to go through this all over again. Last night, Itch.io, one of the most popular platforms for hosting queer and adult independent media, went through a large-scale crackdown on adult content.

This was primarily aimed at games, but novels and comics were hit in the process. Most adult content has been de-listed from the site's search, and some creators were banned without warning. Any funds banned creators have not been paid are currently being withheld by Itch.io.

This crackdown was done, as it always is, because of payment processors like Mastercard and Visa threatening to pull their services.

The payment processors caved to an influence campaign by Australian extremist anti-pornography group Collective Shout, who have been inundating Visa and Mastercard with calls to force video game platforms to stop hosting adult content - which, of course, includes anything queer.

Collective Shout claim to have sent in 1000 emails to get this result, but there are a WAY more than a thousand of us. We need as many people as possible to make as much noise as we can!

A bill has been introduced in the US that would make all pornography a federal crime. Owning it. Creating it. Distributing it.

Under this law, fanart of nude characters would be a federal crime.

Under this law, depictions of homosexuality or simply being transgender, would be considered pornography and a federal crime.

This bill is not going to pass.

However, the reason for this bill is to continue to push the "overton window". The reason for this bill is to make banning pornography seem more and more normal to everyone until they can actually do that.

And remember, they consider depictions of gay characters and transgenders characters "pornography" in any context, including platonic.

They have been working on this for a decade now and it has been working.

If you are one of the people in fandom who thinks that "nasty" porn on AO3 should be banned because it's "icky" or "immoral", then this mental scam is working on you.

Censorship is never about protecting people.

Censorship is always about control.
