Okay, so apparently Homestuck’s updating at Midnight

Hussie’s time, that is EST. That’s the plan according to Paperseverywhere. That’s 110 minutes from now.

It’s past 3am here but I’ll be staying up. The Homestuck reddit are holding a livestream for the occasion. I’ll be watching that. If the update happens and the site doesn’t crash then I’ll record it myself for a video reaction I’m going to do, otherwise I’ll still record myself on camera, and then splice in the flash at a later date.

I’m letting you guys know so you can stay informed, be ready, and also maybe join in this livestream!

i mean, i don't think hussie's out to alienate his fanbase anywhere near as much as a lot of people apparently think he is? but i guess expecting the worst means never being disappointed.

But Davekat is going down in some way or another, atleast in this timeline, which no one said is gonna stay the alpha timeline forever btw..

And Hussie is nice to the fandom and always gives the fandom what they ask for, just in really fucked up ways that kinda make you wish you didn't ask for it haha

i honestly don't get why people expect homestuck to have a horrible, bloody, tragic ending. like, even at it's darkest, homestuck's still a comedy, and if we're going by hussie's previous writing, problem sleuth had tons of character death, but still had a happy ending for everyone who wasn't the main villain. i'm sure it'll still be a wild ride before homestuck's over, but i'm pretty certain that everyone currently living and at least a few dead characters will get their happy ending.

I don’t think Homestuck will end horribly. I think Davekat will.

I mean cmooon, two of the most popular and loved characters, who ppl probably have the most emotional attachment to, end up in a what seems to be a happy loving relationship, and you think Hussie is just gonna give it to us without ruining it in some way? He probably made Davekat canon for the sole purpose of ruining it.. The question is in what horrible way..

Dave’s death is very heavily foreshadowed yeah, but I think that LE permanently killing ghosts was added for a reason too.. Someone currently in the dreambubbles might actually die for good during the battle with LE. That is a thing that can happen. And it’s probably a thing that can happen for a reason.

I think Karkat is definitely not out of “permanent death” danger despite everything Kanaya said.. (maybe she was just telling him all the “future leader stuff” to motivate him for battle.. And “blood” can also stand for “sacrifice”)

But anyway I totally forgot everything that happened recently in Homestuck and had to re read some stuff cuz I had no idea what’s going on.. So yeah he’s KO’d for now, so he’s not gona really die unless he dies first, but that’s a possibility.

karkat is a dream ghost. if he is "killed" in this battle, he'll just wake up in echidna's digs

karkat is probably dead for real.. and we are made to believe he is just sleeping and kanaya just knocked him out.

and that means that if LE kills him, he’s gone for good like the the ghosts LE kills.

if anyone thinks that Hussie is actually gona let davekat sail and not end it in some horrible way then i guess it's been too long and people have forgotten who’s writing this thing..

you know, since we’re all looking forward to the prospect of burning in homestuck hell again, I think this is a good opportunity to ramble on about a plot point in the current timeline/scenario which……. which has me very suspicious I guess? And I’ve been kicking this back and forth in my head for the last several months.

See, back in Act 5 Kanaya says that Echidna offered to tell her the location of the Final Frog in exchange for a request– but this request was, in her words, impossible. Since it was impossible Karkat did the Ultimate Alchemy with the frog as-is, lacking literally any other choice on the matter, and the result is well known.

But she never said what that request was. Not a single peep in the entire story. And Karkat himself doesn’t seem to know what it was either; she just very insistently and pointedly says “it was impossible, nothing else to say”, and he never interjects or clarifies. He just seems to trust that it is.

The funny thing about this is that even though Echidna asked Jade to carry five planets along when she escaped the session, Jade herself did not see the need to hide this strange and absurd request from anyone. Not only that, but she accepted it. She had no idea how she was supposed to accomplish this feat, but she told Echidna she would anyway. And then she told other people what she was expected to do.

So… why didn’t Kanaya? Why did she reject Echidna’s conditions out of hand? For someone like Kanaya who has a Very Particular Way Of Speaking, who came back from the dead, sawed people in half and was so prolific in her Cloud Watching in Skaia, what does “impossible” mean in this context?

And if Echidna’s demand was so impossible before that she wouldn’t even speak of it, how is it that Echidna’s demand right now is so… conveniently what she clearly already intended to do anyway?

So a part of me is trying really hard to convince me that she lied to Karkat. For his own good, of course.

The problem with this line of thinking is that, well. It’s been established that Kanaya doesn’t lie. Eridan even says that she teases, but doesn’t lie. And when put on the spot, she can’t come up with anything better than “oh Karkat really blitzed his chakras so he stayed behind”.

But at the same time… clearly “not lying” is a personal choice for her, rather than some compulsion or quirk. She’s uncomfortable with lying, so she avoids it for the most part. But if she had an idea about what Echidna might want to tell her, and knew in advance that she might have to lie about it, it would not be impossible for her to rehearse enough to sound plausible… would it?

See, my brain seems to have come up with the incredibly compelling scenario where Echidna wants Kanaya to kill Karkat, to which she says “impossible” while meaning “unacceptable” because the latter would generate questioning. Lying without quite lying. Avoiding a lie while letting someone else misinterpret her anyway. 

And that would really explain a lot, including why Echidna’s terms this time around seem so easy, so convenient and so helpful and so hopeful and so suspicious…

…and it makes me feel a little crazy for thinking it up. Both possibilities, that Kanaya is lying and that she isn’t, are too neat and convenient in different ways.

When I think “Kanaya could probably lie to Karkat’s face given some forewarning”, am I being biased in my interpretation of Kanaya?

here’s a refresher on what each character is up to in homestuck, so you know what’s going on when the upd8 hits!

the goal - to create a new universe free of tyranny. vriska has drawn up battle plans. the battle is about to commence.

john, roxy, and alpha rose (specifying bc we have 2) are on the meteor and plan to go fight the condesce. their goal is to kill her, or barring that, keep her busy so she doesn’t mess with anything during the important shit.

john also has the earth (alpha kids’ version, dirk and roxy’s point in time, flooded and inhabited only by carapacians) shrunked and captalogued. the plan is for jade to unshrink it after the battle and for everyone who survives to live there.

dave and dirk are on dirk’s planet, lotak. they plan to fight “lord jack”, the jack from the alpha kids’ session who got lord-english-ified by the condesce. lord jack is on his way to the session.

terezi is jetpacking on her way to lotak and plans to fight lord jack with the striders, and just used her mind powers to do some remembery shit to gain alt terezi’s memories in the most recent panel/flash.

alt terezi (from the game over timeline) and (vriska) are hugging it out in the dreambubbles. they’re not really super relevant anymore but they were in the most recent panel so they get to be up top.

jane is on healing duty, and will be using teleporty windows placed by jasprosesprite to get to people during the battle. she is currently on the meteor.

the mayor, alpha calliope, and jade’s body are inside on the meteor. jade is asleep, and needs to stay that way until the condesce is killed, so that she doesn’t go grimbark again. should jade wake up and not immediately go grimbark, vriska’s plan is for her to go fight dog tier jack, and a note has been left tied to her finger saying this. wv and calliope are just hanging out, since neither really has any combat capabilities. calliope has the ring of life.

meanwhile, jade’s consciousness and alt calliope (the one who predominated) are travelling through the dreambubbles. alt callie is saying cryptic shit about space while jade waits impatiently to wake up. alt callie plans to do Something that is not yet made clear.

karkat is passed out on lofaf (jade’s planet) after kanaya knocked him out. he wanted to go fight, but kanaya promised echidna she would protect him, so he is sleeping.

kanaya is also on lofaf, and has just received the matriorb from roxy. she plans to light the forge and get this frog universe business moving.

echidna has just met with karkat and kanaya and agrees to allow a new universe to be created as logn as karkat is protected. she wants karkat to guide the new universe’s inhabitants.

jake, gcatavrosprite, and jasprosesprite are on lomax (jake’s planet). gcatavrosprite is asleep. jake is supposed to deal with spades slick when he comes. vriska wasn’t sure if ss would be a threat so she just stuck jake with the job. jasprose plans to help jane move around and heal people.

spades slick is on his way to the session, carrying in a magic storage oven the entirety of the felt and ms. paint.

dog tier jack and dog tier pm are on their way to the session, still in seemingly eternal combat. vriska’s plan calls for letting pm deal with jack, and if/when jade wakes up, send jade to help her.

alpha vriska, meenah, and tavros are in the dreambubbles with a giant army of ghosts of dead alt-timeline trolls that tavros assembled. they plan to take on lord english. aradia and sollux are there too.

lord english is on his way, destroying space as he goes.

caliborn knows the future and how he will imprison the beta kids in the homestuck juju, beat up the alpha kids, and then jake will use his hope powers to fuck with caliborn. then arquiusprite will come in and hold off caliborn long enough for dirk to imprison his soul (along with arquiusprite’s and half of gamzee by mistake) in lil cal. then eventually he becomes lord english. caliborn has the ring of void in his future vision.

the condesce is in her battleship on her way to fuck shit up. she has the ring of void. her motive is to create a new universe which she will be dictator of.

gamzee is in the fridge.

davepetasprite (davesprite and alpha nepeta) and arquiusprite are bro hugging. they both plan to go fight lord english, though davepetasprite did not appear in caliborn’s future vision.

low-relevancy players

eridan and feferi aren’t really relevant to the plot anymore it would seem, they’re probably mixed in with tavros’s army.

casey has an army of skeleton consorts.

nannasprite - both pre-retcon nanna and post-retcon nanna survived so there’s two. they are on locah (jane’s planet).

dad crocker is in jail on derse.

dd, hb, and cd from the alpha kids’ session. hb was killed by dirk ages ago. the other two are alive and on derse.

edit: oh yeah and aranea is not only dead, but never got back alive to begin with

i’m sure that everyone has noticed by now that the homestuck game is very, very late. boy, do i have a fun reason why!

you may remember that what pumpkin announced that the game studio “the odd gentlemen” was originally attached to develop the game, and you may also remember that they quietly moved to in house development in 2014. what they didn’t tell you: the reason they did this was that odd gentlemen stole kickstarter money and spent it on king’s quest.

You can love someone and still abuse them.

Read that, and then read it again.

You can be loved and still be abused. There are children everywhere that are living proof of that; hell, my parents were fairly abusive because they had no clue what they were doing and I never ever questioned whether or not they loved you. Not all abuse is intentional. In fact, I’d be willing to argue that 90% of it isn’t. 

More than that, you can love someone and they can still have the perception that you hate them.

 Displaying emotions in the Strider household was taboo as fuck; but - as was noted in Daves intro, and at several other points in the story - Bro wasn’t completely a heartless bastard. Dave was convinced he’d be down with a turntable fort. Bro taught him how to spin. Hell, he fucking died for Dave. The happy moments in Dave’s life were few and far between - and I have no doubt that they diminished as Dave grew up - but there were enough of them that Dave didn’t realize he was being abused until he’d been out of the environment for quite some time. He didn’t spend every second of the day miserable.

I’m not saying Bro wasn’t terrible. Hell, I’m not even saying that Bro must have loved Dave. I’m just saying that it’s a very real possibility that he did.

It doesn’t excuse his actions. There’s nothing that makes how he raised Dave okay. Still, just because Dave is currently convinced Bro never loved him doesn’t mean he didn’t. Bro was fucked up for a variety of reasons and he - obviously - had no clue how to treat a child, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t love Dave.

and considering how dirk was showing his affection for jake by building robots that beat his ass to make him a stronger person, i’d say bro was probably trying to do the same, never realizing how all that affected dave. to me it just seems that bro was doing his best to raise dave to be badass and stoic but he was going about it in a really wrong way. it’s kinda sad that bro never learns it and that dave thinks he hated him. because i really doubt that was the case..

Surely 2011 Homestuck wasn't that bad? I mean, it sounds like a gross exaggeration.

You want to hear how gross of an exaggeration it was? Because my post didn’t even do it justice.

It was March 2011 when the first semblances of Homestuck began to seep through the wood and metal of the convention circuit. The unsuspecting convention goers had absolutely no idea what they were in for as little groups of kids with grey makeup and orange candy corn horns started around the con halls. People were curious, hell I was curious, but that’s all it was. Morbid curiosity.

It was around the time [S] ==> Kanaya Return To The Core was released that people finally hitched on and started getting into it.

And dear god was it hell.

Homestuck completely invaded the convention circuit, bringing in crowds of people ages 11 to 31, and a majority of them were kids. There were meetups every month for every occasion at every place you could imagine. Homestucks started to completely take over convention halls to the point where the dealers room all but emptied out whenever a photoshoot started. Promstuck was established and became a cemented part of convention going. Gamzee’s flooded the con halls at one point after he went crazy and people tried to recreate sopor pies.

People were sitting in bathtubs trying to sharpie dye their skin grey. Karkat cosplayers were having actual literal buckets thrown at their heads. Nicki Minaj’s ‘Turn Me On’ was a national anthem that sparked a music video. Children screaming ‘Fuckass’ in the hallways as they got their unsealed paint all over the walls and floors. There was at least one hundred Dave cosplayers at every photoshoot, and Photoshoots looked like this:

You see that Squarewave in the middle of the group? That’s me controlling the crowd around me. This was convention Homestuck. This was true nightmare. If you saw a horde of Homestucks coming at you, you fucking ran. There were literally hundreds of Homestucks back in 2011.

And then there was the tumblr side of it.

AU’s popped up for every conceivable thing. Broadwaystuck, Circusstuck, Dormstuck, Sadstuck, Any fucking thing you could think of, you slapped -stuck onto the end of it and it immediately became a reality. There were countless ask blogs for every character imaginable and the Homestuck Hype was real.

When the Cascade flash aired it crashed Newgrounds for two days.

‘FIRST!’ cosplays were a thing, and if you managed to make one you were heralded as a god. The Alpha Kids came into existence and everyone raced to cosplay them and to see who could name them, who could be them first. Canon urls became sacred and if you had one you were god.

There was a literal fight for the jadeharley url

Updates were daily, multiple times daily. It was the start of Octopimp’s Eridan and Tavros voices, it was how he got popular. Broadwaystuck sweeped tumblr like a plague and the words ‘Let me tell you about Homestuck’ became a threat. It was around the time I formed The Rose Lalonde Homestuck Thesis. Everywhere you looked, there was Homestuck. Hussie’s girlfriend was sending cease and desist’s to fanartists, Whatpumpkin didn’t even have Tshirts on it’s website yet. People kept skipping the Intermission to get to the trolls. And then Cascade happened.

Then the fandom went on Hiatus. A Megapause, if you will.

And then things started calming down. Once 2013 started, it was as if nothing had ever happened. Homestuck was still there, sure, but it was muted. Controlled. Expectant. As if anything that could happen now wasn’t anywhere near as bad as what had already transpired. Now we are but a shadow of the chaos that once was.

2011 Homestuck is not a gross exaggeration my friend. I lived through it. I survived.

It was exactly as bad as it sounds.
