Keeping his dark hues on his wilting roses, Raphael spoke swiftly and firmly. “ Your country came to Europe and expected praise for their laxness, just as the Nazis marched into Italy while Mussolini’s body hung nel palazzo. You cannot beat a dead horse and say you’ve killed it. ” Ada, under the commanding tone of her father, kept her head down as she played with the details of her dress. The war had ended a few years earlier but they, as well as the rest of Europe, felt just as empty as when it started. A pale, slender hand rose and waived the topic with a swipe of his hand. “ All we can do, carissimo, is move and try to live. We cannot die in our guilt. ” Survivors guilt, they all knew that well. Ada stood up and walked over to her father. She gingerly wrapped her arms around his, resting a cheek against his arm. In a few moments of silence, the vampire, in his stubbornness, finally turned and kissed the top of his daughter’s head in an effort to be father-like. Wide ceruleans looked up at Raphael and then shifted to Daniel. “ This place is so dull. Perhaps, we could give life to it? ” Adaline offered and smiled.
Danny dropped his head at his master’s tone, just like Ada had, and grit his teeth together. He was overwhelmingly anxious... anxious to show his master that he wasn’t some stupid American who had little knowledge about the world. It was the war that took away his innocence but allowed him a new knowledge he wouldn’t have gained otherwise. Standing the soldier made his way to the end of the terrace and stood next to Raphael. His blue gaze decided to glance over the garden before answering Ada. “How?” He cleared his throat and raised his brow at Raphael. “Well... Maybe we could replant some flowers and after that... perhaps lend a hand down in town?”
