Do you have any favorite books on queer history?
I really really love William Mann's books on gay figures in Old Hollywood. Especially Wisecracker, which is about William Haines, a silent film mega-star who was publicly out as gay and partnered until the studio tried forcing him into the closet after the rise of talkies. He refused, and pivoted to working in set design, antiquing, and later, interior design. He went on to become an interior decorator for and close friend to Nancy Reagan. He also started a gay brothel when he was like 17. Fascinating figure.
William Mann's biography of Katharine Hepburn is also fantastic. He discusses her evident gender dysphoria and queerness thoroughly, yet is appropriately tentative in his conclusions.
Behind the Screen is Mann's more general and broad book, discussing the role numerous queer people of a variety of identities played in early Hollywood.
Tom Fitzgerald and Lorenzo Marquez (best known as the creators of the Mad Style blog thematically analyzing the costumes in Mad Men) also have a book on the history of drag called Legendary Children, and I learned a lot from it. It's also an incredibly breezy, approachable read. Their podcast touches on queer history quite frequently as well, usually set against the backdrop of modern day controversies and fashion & media industry news.

Hey, I (have been) in the process of diagnosing my chronic fatigue and as a result my insurance maxed out co-pays and unrelated doctor appointments have been hitting me like a brick. I had what I thought was a rash a few weeks ago and went to the dermatologist which was $145 and I have an upcoming gynecology appointment that (while usually mostly covered) isn't anymore because of having to see other doctors for my chronic fatigue. Which ends up being $180. The rent hike at my complex has also made living expenses more strenuous. I anticipate needing around $550 in financial assistance for the month. Thank you so much 💖

Just your reminder that the British treated Jews horrifically. They sent ships of Jewish refugees back to Europe where they were killed by the Nazis, they imprisoned Holocaust survivors who had lost their homes, they refused to take in Germany's Jews during the Evían conference. The first ever blood libel was in England, and England was the first European country to expell its Jews.
Don't forget England's antisemitism when you talk about the horrors of English colonialism and imperialism, especially now that Queen Elizabeth is finally dead.
Just in case we suddenly disappear. Tumblr is actively censoring Black and Native people.

we are all very lonely and desperate for friendship i dont think you will really embarrass yourself by unabashedly seeking it out. i think you will find many other people are also looking for it. people will gravitate towards you if you just let them. its going to be fine

its so rejuvenating to see elderly people being enamored with modern technology rather than dismissive of it because they have difficulty understanding it
I LITERALLY feel the exact same way. 3D printing is incredible to me.
preperations for the long journey ahead, friend
My last post didn’t do so well and I unfortunately still need help with finances. I’m asking for help so I won’t get any overdraft fees in the future. I don’t mean to sound rude but while I appreciate the reblogs, I still didn’t get as many people donating. Anything helps.

I am both in awe of their rhythm and if fear dor their ankles. *chef's kiss*
I learned how to dance something similar to this in the third grade. in Cambodia it's called the Pestle Dance, and it is WAY slower than this, and it is still REALLY hard to do the turny bits without getting your ankles banged up. it was my least favorite dance to learn because it hurts like a bitch when your foot gets caught. that is god-tier levels of talent.
