Last Thursday, April 18th, the DuBois Hall Council, in partnership with their sister HH Hall Council at Spelman, hosted a block party in light of Morehouse's Freshman Week. As the advisor, I can personally attest to all of the ups and downs that the hall council has been through this semester, but I can honestly say that they all came together for this last event to make sure that DuBois went out with a BANG!
They truly did accomplish what they set out to achieve, especially since other halls hosted block parties that week and ours was the LIVEST! I'm proud of these guys, and am honored to have worked with them.
With the 21st century being so tech-savvy, I took it upon myself to revamp W.E.B. DuBois Hall's Visitation Check In and Out system. Using the very simple, yet elegant Google Documents, everything is viral now! (Saving a lot of paper, and allowing info to accessed from anywhere via the net) Logs can be seen of the people checked in and out from the very beginning of the semester and access to the logistics are easy to be shared with other administrators! Maybe OHRL will transition into the technological realm very soon....?
Ms. Rebecca Rogers and Ms. Erica Ferguson, Spelman class of 2014, talking about the highlights of the event and encouraging everyone who missed the first Graduate/Professional School Boot Camp to be on the look out and attend the next one coming Fall 2013.
W.E.B. DuBois Hall President, Seretsi Lekena, shares his experience with the inaugural Graduate/Professional School Boot Camp on February 9, 2013.
It has been my honor to be selected as a candidate for Spelman College's Mr. Blue and White 2013-2014! I am running on the platform, "Raising Voices, not Hands" to raise awareness to domestic violence and attempt to heal its victims through the arts. This experience thus far has forced me to open up and allowed me to develop genuine relationships not only at Spelman, but in the AUC as a whole. April 20th will be the day when I will prayerfully be crowned the next Mr. Blue and White!
In light of it being April Fool's Day, the W.E.B. Dubois Hall Staff saw it fit to prank the residents. It took a bit of scheming and sneaking around, but the looks on their faces when they read this was one word: PRICELESS!!!
The second, and very controversial promotional commercial for my racial stereotype and discrimination program titled "Skins"
WARNING: VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED.
Video promotion for my racial discrimination and stereotype program titled "Skins"
My flier for my upcoming program titled, "Skins." This program is going to highlight not only the diversity within the AUC, but also bring awareness to all forms of racial stereotype and discrimination.
My latest bulletin board in the W.E.B DuBois Hall main entrance. Being as how the weather is getting warmer and Spring Break is around the corner, I thought it’d be best to inform the residents about safe sex. What better way to catch their interest in reading the facts about STDs than comparing them to Pokemon? But unlike the show, we DON’T want to “catch ‘em all.”
DISCLAIMER: This is also the very first bulletin board that I have done completely by myself
More pictures from the Inaugural Graduate/Professional School Boot Camp! Meetings to prepare for the fall's Boot Camp are already set for next week!
Today, February 23, 2013, myself and DeMarcus Crews, sponsored by the Junior Class Council and Morehouse Business Association, hosted Harvard Business School (HBS). About 60 students from the AUC came out to hear what it takes to get into HBS and what to expect as a student at the school. The session was full of laughs, intellectual conversation, and most importantly, NETWORKING! And Papa Johns and Pepsi provided lunch! I've decided that I am going to pursue my JD/MBA degree come time after graduation so now it's time to start prepping for the GMAT!
Saturday, February 9, 2013, I had my first program of the semester called "Graduate/Professional School Boot Camp." The day hosted over 50 universities from all divisions of graduate and professional level studies to include: Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Columbia, University of Chicago, UCLA, Duke, Vanderbilt, Emory, Georgia Tech, Stanford, etc. These recruiters led workshops on Personal Statements, Resumes, Funding Opportunities, and the application process for current undergraduate students in the AUC. While we had about 400 registered AUC students for the event, only 20% showed up. It was a very hectic and frustrating at first, but myself and the other organizer of the event gathered together and restructured the entire outlay of the day to accommodate for the lack of attendance. All in all, the event still turned out successful! All of the recruiters said that they want to come back, and even though there was a lack in quantity of students, there was no lack in quality. I was even personally recruited by Yale Law School for the fall of 2014, so Harvard better beat that to get me there!
President John Wilson stopped by his old freshman residence hall, W.E.B. DuBois Hall, to see where the legacy has gone since he left. He sat down and talked to the residents about what it takes to not only represent Morehouse College, but also Du Beta Psi! Reminiscing on his experiences in Room 215 as a freshman brought a lot of laughs and stories into the atmosphere. This year has been a great one for the residents of DuBois Hall, and this was just the icing on the cake.
Are you interested in going to Graduate, Business, Medical, or Law School? Are you interested in going to Harvard University, Yale University, Cornell University, Columbia University, Duke University, or any of the other 50+ top tier schools registered to come? Then you NEED to be at the first AUC Graduate/Professional School Boot Camp! Recruiters from these universities will lead workshops on: -Building/Creating your Résumé/CV -Drafting an effective Personal Statement -Funding Opportunities for Graduate/Professional School -How to Secure Top Quality Letters of Recommendations -The Application Process for Graduate/Professional School Recruiters will also host a mixer where you may network with whichever Graduate/Professional Institution that you are interested in attending. Register online at www.tinyurl.com/aucbootcamp Any other questions or concerns may be directed toward myself, DeAndre Horton, at [email protected], or my colleague, DeMarcus Crews, at [email protected]. In the words of Malcolm X, "Education is the passport to the future. For tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today."
Upon arrival from their Vanguard Retreat this past weekend, the DuBois Hall Vanguards shared a game they learned on the retreat called "Mafia." While tensions rose, and allegations were made, it was a great way to bond with the residents and bring out the detective in each one of them.
