He cracks a half smile at GP, maybe in attempt to make her feel a bit better, or more reassured. He’s grateful when she turns to see how Ash is doing. And that’s not all that good, by the sounds of things. Yet he can’t really bring himself to turn and look, for the moment he thinks about it, something in the base of his wall crumbles and he has to steel himself when he turns his eyes to Minnie, staring at him in concern. He swallows and gives her a watery laugh.
“‘M sorry I didn’t think… I didn’t know… I didn’t know Norton would do that I g-gotta do something…” He seems to try to move to stand, but Minnesota’s hands on his shoulders keep in place. A shaking builds in his core and channels out, twitching at his fingers and making his breathing jump erratically. It’s not something he really notices, though. Maybe a bit like when the warmth sets in while you’re freezing to death. Not a terrible way to die, really. A weak smile twitches at the corners of his lips, his expression as apologetic as he can manage.
He laughs faintly in response, nodding quickly. “It doesn’t look too bad on you.” That’s all he says on the matter, ducking his head. He’s surprised she’d found it— surprised, despite the fact that she’d done the exact same thing last time he’d gone missing, that she had come looking for him in the first place. “Can’t believe you found it. You’re okay, right? You haven’t seen N-norton or anything.” He slips up on his words, he stumbles, and he knows it’s going to cost him. She’s already worried enough, she doesn’t need him twitching and flinching and stammering. He tries to breathe deep. He tries to square his shoulders. But something catches his eye.
A flash. Something moves. Something stirs. It slips across his line of sight in a black smudge, disappearing in his peripherals. His eyes close and he feels himself slipping, right off the edge of a tall, tall cliff. Falling and reaching for something. His eyes snap open as he looks at Minnesota with half-lidded eyes, his head barely lifted. Frankly, he feels and looks like he might keel over at any second, but Minnesota isn’t going to hear that from him. Still, the feeling grows, familiar and lurking there, begging him to remember. Ink spills into his lungs, causing him to choke on one desperate breathe. And he answers her.
“I’m.. I’m fine. There’s nothing wrong I’m fine” he whispers. He means to say that louder. With more confidence. But he doesn’t. “I’m sorry I made you… and everyone worried.”
Something else was closing in on him, lying beside him, hissing and whispering and mocking him. But it was just Gem, just Gem and not a monster, not the monster his mind was convincing him was there. His breath was shuddering, coming out in thick sputters between his teeth which he was baring in an almost animal fashion, not that he realized it. His third eye rolled, crazed, in it’s socket, and thick black tar oozed from it, seeped from his natural eyes.
A hand on his shoulder and a request for him to speak have him sitting up suddenly, slapping the hand away and scrambling backwards into the shade.
“Don’t come near me don’t come near don’t near don’t stay away stay back I DON’T NEED YOU DON’T NEED ANYONE DIDN’T NEED THEM OR HIM HE’S DEAD HE’S DEAD I KILLED HIM MY FAULT? MY FAULT THEY’RE DEAD MY FAULT HE’S HERE MY FAULT THE VOID WENT TO THE VOID MY FAULT TOO ALL MY FAULT STAY AWAY DON’T HURT ME I’M SORRY I’M SORRY.”
He screamed until his lungs were about to burst, spitting out black pitch as he collapsed in a heap in the dark, raised his hands to cover his eye, contemplated digging his fingers into it and tearing it out to stop the blindness.
“My brother my brother I’m sorry I failed my fault I’m sorry Ash is sorry my friends my brother all my fault.”
Geminia pulled her hand back as she was prepared to do, but nothing could have made her made her ready for that. She had expected him to be at least a little resistant, and under any other circumstances she would have wrangled him into a hug. But his spewing pitch from the eyes was enough to push that thought away. She stared for a moment; nowhere in any movie, any book had there been advice on How To Comfort Your Tar-Emitting Friend. No, there were no words to instruct her and even instict was beginning to fail. She’d be lying if she denied tearing up - she’d never been a huge fan of horror movies and this was basically straight from the flicks to her. But she tried regardless. Not bothering to stand up fully, she slowly crawled over to the shady spot where Ash had again set himself, making sure to do away with her tears by then. She sniffled as he screamed, words that barely made sense to her and left a ringing in the air around her ears. She felt choked up and hesitant to touch him, and figured that maybe that wasn’t the best course of action. After sitting down again, cross-legged and facing him, she remained silent. No use talking to a deaf man, and right now Ash was close enough. She waited for him to calm slightly before reaching out, placing her hand where it had been before, even if it wasn’t exactly wise. If words would fail her, she could at least be there in touch.
She was indeed startled when Ash burst out, but was relieved to see that Geminia seemed to be taking care of him. Best not to overload his senses, and she was afraid of agitating him if she tried. She turned her attention back to Tommy who suddenly didn't look all that well. "T-Tommy?" And then his head snapped so fast she was surprised she didn't hear his neck crack. "Woah, woah!! Steady now!" She brushed his hair off his forehead and patted him on the cheek and grinned shakily. " 'Fine', he says! I don't think so."
"You're a big dumb liar, you know that?" Minnesota shyly sat closer to him, shoulder to shoulder in hopes of keeping him propped up. The last thing she wanted was to have him fall over and get some serious brain damage or something. She patted him on the hand, hoping it was reassuring to him. "Don't be sorry, okay? Worrying's...good, I suppose. Makes you feel human, you know? Not that I'm saying go dive in there the next chance you get!! We're both fine, I think." She looked over at her two companions and then back to Tommy. "We haven't seen Norton." She was thankful for that, not only afraid of meeting the same thing that Ash and Tommy had, but afraid she'd knock him right in the teeth for doing so. She always tried to stay out of fights if she could. She was a peacemaker at heart, and her pain tolerance was pretty low anyways.
"But enough about us, okay? How are you? Really, how are you? That place you were in sounded so...and then you were all staticky and, and-" Minnesota's voice cracks and she rubs her eyes to stop the prickling feeling that had been threatening to make her cry. She pinches her wrists, scolding herself. 'You can cry later, geez louise!' She looks Tommy over once more, concerned. "You're shaking..."
Minnesota barreled through Spirit, one hand on her eye, no longer covered, and the other hand barely touching whatever lanterns she’d passed. She was running against the clock, trying to find Willa’s resting place as fast as possible. For what she could remember, she and Willa had not been that close, and most of the people she had spoken to seemed to be afraid of her, or dislike her at the least. She didn’t really understand why, Willa seemed like a nice enough girl, and she was damned if she’d let another friend slip into the Void.
She would have missed the body if it wasn’t for Willa’s bright hair, and she knelt down next to her, pinching her wrists in worry. “Oh, Willa…” She sighed and took her by the shoulders, shaking her softly at first, and then with growing force. “You said you knew what you were doing. Please, please wake up!”
The girl barely even twitches - she’s surprisingly light for her height, perhaps hollow-boned, fragile and thin - but her third eye, closed, blinks. It’s a simple blink, but the pupil is shrunken in fear (only pupil, really, Willa’s two primary eyes are white and apparently unworking); on some level, she’s registering Minnie’s presence. On her highest level, she’s not.
(in the Void she writhes in fear and anger and helpless fury, but she’s bound just the same, arms and legs and throat - good thing breathing isn’t needed quite so much (and that she doesn’t breathe traditionally anyways), else Willa’s quite aware she’d be in trouble. if nothing else, it still hurts. but it’s really too late, really, it is- she can practically feel it sinking into her skin, the shadowblack of the void’s embrace and there’s something quite disquieting about it! Willa knows this isn’t right and she doesn’t want to be here, not really; but they won’t let go, and her struggles are weakening; it’s taking so much effort to speak outside of this dream. but it’s not a dream, is it? if it was a dream, she could simply wake up.
and trying to wake up isn’t doing her any good.)
Her worry increases, and she brushes the hair off of Willa’s face in a sort of motherly way- at least, she assumed it to be motherly, she’d had no previous knowledge of what motherly was -and stares at Willa’s eye, recognizing the fear. Her eye was blue, a stark contrast against Willa’s otherwise pale body. Minnesota wondered if she could see her through it, her own eye unable to do something like that as far as she knew. Would it be worth talking to it? Talking to an eye seemed awfully foolish to her, but she was too worried about her safety to care much for public opinion, and she resumed shaking. “Willa, please, please wake up! Don’t let them get you, okay? I know you’re stronger than that…come back!” She squeezed her arms and pinched her in hopes of getting a response and prayed that she’d forgive her for the marks if- when she awoke.
Willa’s body shifts a bit at the touches, but not much; there’s a chance any touch might cause her to do the same. Some of the words carry through into the girl’s mind, though, and her fight has some renewed vigor in the different space; but it’s not enough.
Bruises and ink-black cracks cover her skin but not her body - body’s fine, body’s pristine as usual; but - don’t go to sleep. Never go to sleep. Sleep is bad, sleep is wrong; normally she sleeps rarely but this adventuring was too sharp a chance to pass up. And now Willa wishes she did pass it up, yes; it’s too much trouble.
She screams a few words out into the Void - the gist of them should reach Minnie, yes. Good enough. They’ll be staticked and panicky and the psychic projecting shouldn’t quite catch them all, but the plan should be foolproof; dying fixes most -everything!
‘kill me
should wake up’
She jumps when she hears the words, unaccustomed to the sound of a voice in her head that wasn't her own, and looks down at her, shocked. "I...I suppose so..." She wasn't too sure about this. Yeah, dying was usually the solution, and she surely wouldn't respawn asleep (right?) but she was worried that maybe something would go wrong if she died still asleep. "I'm...probably just worrying, yeah."
She scooped Willa up in her arms with relative ease, thankful that because she wasn't the tallest or strongest girl she knew Willa was still so light. She walked slowly back to the pit she had jumped over to reach her, and shifted from foot to foot in worry. "Oh. Oh Willa, I'm just not sure..." Minnesota looked over the pit herself. It was a rather long fall, but there were indeed spikes at the bottom. And this would be the second time she'd killed (helped?) someone in this way. Willa was a smart girl, though. She seemed to know a lot more than most of the people she'd met about this place, so she hoped that Willa was right about this. She swallowed thickly, and held Willa out at arms length over the cliff.
"Please be right about this..."
And she let her fall.

He was babbling now, gasping out jumbled words that meant absolutely nothing as he focused only on that terrible blindness he was suffering, bright white light the only thing his eyes were taking in beyond the shadowy figure that towered over him. Somewhere in his mind it registered as Tommy but that rational part of his brain was quickly smothered by overwhelming fear and his babbling became feverish, filled with screaming as he covered his eyes and turned himself away. No words were registering to him, the presence of anyone new was quickly forgotten, and so he lay on his side in the sunlight with his arms wrapped tightly around himself, hoping that the sun would purge him of the nightmares.
But it didn’t. He was drawn back to that night, standing on the side of the road in the pouring rain, staring down at his totalled car, down at his brother and himself. He’d killed his own brother, murdered him at an age where he had so much to live for. That was why he’d been sent to The End, he knew it. And why he’d gone to that void to find Tommy. Tommy said he hadn’t deserved it, but he had. He deserved everything he got and no one knew why.
Just him and Norton. Norton. Where was Norton?
He wanted his brother back. He wanted to find him and tell him how sorry he was. But he couldn’t. He couldn’t force himself to move, a prisoner in his own head and body, curled up in the sunlight. He forced out a pathetic whimper between his chattering teeth and curled up further, in both physical and emotional agony.
“I could be a bit better dude but don’t even start that shit now alright you’re losin’ it. Take a breather.” The two were a sight for literal sore eyes, and Geminia smiled wider despite the pain in her head. There were bigger worries at hand than her headache, and with that in mind she reached a hand out to pat Tommy’s shoulder. It was… an embarrassing miss, seeing as he’d taken that moment to stumble over. Instinct told her to move and try to catch him, but even then she was just a bit too slow. Shooting a glance to Ash, she switched to a frown and the gravity of their situation became highly evident. This is where her concern kicked in. Normally in the face of hardship, she could take a step back, chill, forget about the problem and not even face it but here? Here that didn’t apply. Not with one friend down for the count and another newly fallen to his knees. Consolation wasn’t GP’s area of expertise, not in the least, but it was worth a shot, and she looked to Minnesota before leaning in to whisper. “You take care of Tommy, aight? You know him better, I think.” Gem plopped down into the grass next to Ash, and paused to clean her glasses on the bottom of her shirt. She knew absolutely nothing about their situation - they’d been somewhere, they’re back, and now Ash was a quivering ball of himself that, maybe if she thought wishfully enough and didn’t mess it up, maybe she could fix. “…hey Ash, man, can ya hear me?” She laid down fully next to him, on her side and head resting on her arm, skewing her glasses again. Visibly upset about the situation, the feeling of which was only compounded by her lack of comforting experience, she rest her free hand on his shoulder, prepared to pull back if she had to. “Come on man, talk to me.”
She nodded at GP when she spoke, agreeing with her. "If you're sure..." It was true, she did know him better, having only spoken to Ash a few times. Not that she didn't care for Ash, too, but facts were facts. Minnesota sat down in worry next to Tommy and after hesitating only the slightest bit, took him by the shoulders and propped him into a sitting position. She clenched and unclenched her fists, torn between giving him one of the few hugs she'd ever given in her existence, crying from happiness and stress (mostly stress), and socking him right in the face for being so reckless and making her worry, and decides to wait until later to figure it out.
"H-Hey, you big...dummy, next time warn me before you try to become hero of the millennia, okay?" She quickly tried to look him over for wounds, and was pleased when she hadn't found any. "Probably just lost about ten years of my afterlife from worrying so much!" She hoped that it was only nausea and that the boys would be lucky enough not to experience any horrible aftertrauma, although from what it sounded like, she . Minnesota removed his cap and ran a hand through her hair, displaying an embarrassed smile from when he mentioned it. "I-" 'Oh man, how do I say this without sounding totally lame?'
"I was...keeping it safe for you. Mine's back in Body. Totally useless, though," she laughed, "It does nothing for my eye." She pressed a hand to his forehead, checking for fever- could the dead even get fevers?- or any other prominent sign of unwellness. "How do you feel? Can you feel all your limbs? Can you see straight? You're not seeing four of me, are you? If you need to lay down, just say the word and I'll scooch over."
