âTry to remember when you were in their shoes.â
âI wore boots.â
okay, iâm going to wax poetic about this scene for a sec. itâs one of my favourite âsam jack but make it not shippyâ scenes in the whole show and iâm gonna word vom about it.Â
at this point we had the Season Four Pain And Angst full of established canon that these two care a lot more than theyâre supposed to, as well as all the preceding episodes featuring life and death, pining and humour, PTSD and jello. so by now we absolutely know that these two are (if not going to get together) ~A Thing~ in this universe.Â
but what I love about this scene is itâs got none of that, instead showing their capability and their working relationship as senior SGC members (both rank and tenure). founding members of the galactic frontline, forged in fire. theyâre grading students, giving quick and decisive assessments of these kidsâ ability to respond in combat settings, make tactical decisions, and be governable in a military environment. and theyâre doing it over lunch. this is just so goddamn realistic for two people who are very good at what they do. they donât need to make it a formal debrief (although they will, probably, for governance sake) - these choices and assessments are second nature by this point, and further, their differences of opinion beautifully reflect their own combat / academic experiences. sam is the optimistic academic and jack is the droll black ops boi. this scene is a textbook example of show-donât-tell when it comes to Sam and Jackâs capabilities; theyâre showing us how good they are in their respective careers by having them assess how good others are at doing a third of the work. AND the writers are showing their friendship and their trust - putting aside the shippiness for a tick, these two have Done Some Shit together and have a shorthand born of literal life and death, and they like each other, so yeah, they can have a frank and open discussion, where they parry and bant back and forth, even if what theyâre talking about is actually kinda serious. when you know your business this well, as they do, you donât need to show your working; saying âi think he was tap dancingâ over a late night canteen dinner is your working.
this scene does SO MUCH and I just LOVE it
And this scene was an add-on because the script was short. So the writers naturally said, throw Rick and Amanda in there because it just makes sense that these two would be talking about.
sometimes itâs They Would Not Fucking Get Married but sometimes itâs just They Would Not Have A Fucking Wedding. send those characters to the courthouse on a tuesday or so help me

i truly believe in order to make peak star trek again you simply have to get a cast of actors who have only done theatre and nothing else. you can have one token TV Guy if you wish. but so help me god i need those aliens doing shakespeare up there
BABYLON 5 1993 â 1998ă»1x03 Born to the Purple
I used the phrase "waiting on tenterhooks" and then thought "what the hell is a tenterhook".
It's these things! So when you're waiting on tenterhooks, you're stretched tight like a piece of cloth. Very evocative, now that I know what it means.

it is so fucking sad to find a cool fanartist on here and then see that their last post was from like 2018 and they were announcing that they were moving to Twitter.
It's like being a space colonist and finding a little abandoned space cottage and there's a diary in it and the last entry is like "i have now gone to seek a better life on [name of planet that got overtaken by axe-wielding octopi that feed on human blood]"
Shout out to the (many) times I got called an elitist gatekeeper for saying that the only real way to fully understand a work of fiction is to experience it firsthand and that summaries and reviews are not a replacement for that
Me, reading the first 80% of the post: What do you mean, "experience it firsthand"? How am I supposed to join the Hunger Games or go on the Odyssey?
Me, reading the final clause of the post: Oh, you literally meant that people have to read the book/listen to the audiobook in order to fully understand it. And people got mad. Oh dear.
To quote what a friend of mine said after she watched Jerry Maguire (1996) for the first time, having thought she knew what it was about because of its cultural ubiquity: âyou miss a lot of a movie when you donât watch itâ
thinking about how threshold would have gone on other star treks. just spitballing here iâm taking suggestions:
original trek: would fit right in here honestly, no change
the animated series: itâs even weirder somehow. the evolved human salamanders are hot pink.
tng: we actually know what theyâd do because theyâve had two episodes in this genre already, but with some key differences: a) the character who transmogrifies into a glowy gecko (geordi) is the only character on the show with no daddy issues whatsoever, and b) âgenesisâ hinges on the fact that even if you turn into a lizard, your babies will be born normal. of course if those babies were humans and not cats, by the end credits theyâd have somehow winked out of existence or never been born at all or something. the j/p babyfic fans just canât win.
deep space nine: they definitely arenât abandoning those babies!!! instead the babies die and itâs the saddest thing youâve ever seen
enterprise: in only four seasons this show somehow had TWO precedents for âwe will care for these accidental weird babies in a cringefunny way until we find them a home with more appropriate caregiversâ AND a âcrewmembers evolved into something stupid but we fixed itâ episode
discovery: this is the one show where i feel confident that they keep the lizard babies forever. unsure if the parents leave the show for a while to care for them or if they just have an off-screen salamander daycare on the ship now, but they reappear out of nowhere in the last two episodes of the season to save the universe
short treks: itâs an entire civilization of human salamanders now
star trek picard: those babies are getting fucking dismembered right in front of you
strange new worlds: those babies are getting fucking dismembered right in front of you (by the good guys this time)
prodigy: ah heck i forgot this one before i posted and now iâm on time constraint. umm. the babies (still abandoned by parents) are main characters now
lower decks: janeway and paris just stay that way and continue their starfleet careers with only minor interruption. the pepperoni pizza caused it.
