Game companies hate emulation, but none of them seem to understand that a lot of us would just buy ROMs from them directly if we could. I don't want a fifth remake of Final Fantasy IV, I want to pay five bucks for the 3MB file you already made bank with thirty years ago. Nobody who wants to play something for the purpose of retro gaming is going to consider a $40 remake as the alternative option, and we're certainly not going to let the original dissappear. They're crying about opportunity cost for a product they're not even selling.

op i know you're probably talking about like, video games, etc, but this is also critical for research science - my lab has so much abandonware, either because the company's out of business, or the company decided to not maintain it, and it's a fucking nightmare. we have two windows 95 computers that are CRITICAL for performing experiments/data analysis because the software needed is abandonware. one of the main roles for a guy in my lab is to maintain these little dinosaurs because if they go out, we lose access to ~20 years of raw data for research. part of why is that these companies also make their own file types, and make it difficult-to-impossible to convert those file types without their specific software. by habit, i convert all research files to more generic versions (txt, pdf, tif, etc) so that i minimize risk of losing my shit, but some stuff can't be converted.

for example, we have a microscope that is perfectly functional, good microscope, but its software is abandonware because the company refused to maintain it. the company is still in business, still makes essentially the exact same software, but they made all of the old tech incompatible with new software to force people to buy the new microscope tech. it would cost a quarter million dollars to replace this microscope. this perfectly good microscope.

so like, i know a lot of people look at the original post here and go "well op just wants old video games to play" (which is valid! games companies should not be able to push shit to abandonware and then close it off) but also this is critical for like. biomedical research. if y'all had any idea how much basic infrastructure built on science relies on shit that is technically abandonware, you would probably be horrified.

Sometimes the shenanigans that come up in an episode of Stargate make me wonder about SGC HR and payroll.

Like, okay, so in Holiday Machello body-swaps with Daniel and then goes out and buys lunch for a bunch of random people in a diner. With Daniel's credit card. Now, I mean, maybe you can just call up the credit card company and say, "I didn't authorize this purchase," but if it was a large purchase, and it seems it probably was, the diner will probably challenge the chargeback, and they almost certainly have Daniel on camera. So like, how is this handled? Does Daniel just have to eat the cost? Budgeting for his credit card bill while cursing Machello for stealing his body and $500 worth of milkshakes? Or does the SGC have like. Insurance. For that sort of thing. Given the nature of the Goa'uld it's not unreasonable. $10 per paycheck and if your body gets hijacked by some kind of alien malevolence and spends all your money the Air Force will just quietly settle the bill in the event you survive and get your body back.

In A Matter of Time most of the SGC experiences a single day, but outside, two weeks go by due to the time dilation effects of the black hole. Some scrooge in payroll is patting themselves on the back for months for managing to successfully argue that everyone inside the mountain should only be paid for the time they actually experienced working, instead of the full two weeks of real time that they were at work. They severely regret it when Window of Opportunity rolls around and Jack and Teal'c scrape together the evidence that they experienced work for 2,160 hours in a single day.

As a manager of large, global HR and payroll departments, I also pondered the question of how to pay Jack in A Matter of Time, where one work day took two weeks, and in Window of Opportunity where he worked for thousands of hours in a time loop.

An aside - I have no idea how payroll works in the US Air Force so I am going on what decisions I would make.

First off Jack is very likely salaried exempt (US payroll speak for not eligable for overtime) as he is in a leadership position and seemingly has no fixed hours.

I would have made the decision to pay Jack for two weeks salary during that one shift in Matter of Time, because first, he is salaried, and second, policies encourage behaviours, and we would want staff to volunteer for dangerous missions, such as staying in the mountain when there is a black hole, without being financially penalised for the whole time dilation thing.

Consistent with this, and being exempt, Jack wouldn't be eligible for overtime in Window of Opportunity. I was thinking of a one-off bonus for the extra work, but what about other people who, for example, get stuck off-world for longer than planned? They could also argue to be eligible for bonuses, and payroll costs could spiral. Maybe some long paid PTO.

But in general, their payroll would be a nightmare and God only knows what workers comp would look like, but I would still 100% take the job 😂

And on the Daniel question, given he is a government contractor, he would definitely be able to expense his credit card bill after Holiday.

If anyone does knows how payroll in the Air Force works, let me know, just because I am a nerd and would be interested.

Interesting stuff! I’d also love to know how all the ‘back office’ departments deal with the strange things that happen at the SGC. Could have been a fun ‘Lower Decks’ type episode where the finance team is trying to carry out the quarterly budget review, but keeps being inconvenienced by the latest ‘aliens trying to invade earth’ nonsense.

I feel so completely vindicated that other people are curious about the HR department of the SGC because my friends think I'm overcomplicating it when I ask these EXACT QUESTIONS.

I can only assume that all frontline base personnel would be on some kind of composite allowance that a numbers wonk somewhere worked out to account for possible off world or on-world irregularities in working hours (i.e stranded on another planet or stuck in a time loop). So like, everyone assigned to an SG team (or maybe you can argue the whole base) would get an extra 12% on their base wage regardless, instead of having to lodge individual overtime or irregular hour timesheets to get paid out. Which 90% of the time would mean you get over and above your base salary for just doing your job, but 10% of the time comes in REAL handy when someone uses an offworld gate to blow up a sun and you have to wait for a ride home.

I think my girl Samantha Carter deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor.

Major/Lieutenant Colonel Sam being the brains WITH brawn (and a crack shot to boot) of SG-1, saving our Galaxy a dozen times over while getting the respect she deserves from her peers. Doesn't let something like a little crush on her Commanding Officer slow her down. Literally her ONLY drawback is the occasional bout of poor writing.

Goes through hell over and over without hesitation and always manages to pull her team out of the fire, kicking many asses along the way.

Truly one of the Sci-Fi Women of all time.

Everybody say thank you Amanda Tapping for standing her ground and fighting tooth and nail with all the bullshit 90s male writers and producers were continuously trying to pull with her character. Every single thing great, right and progressive about Sam is Amanda's doing. Starting with the fact that she managed to do what even Star Trek failed to do: flat out refusing, under the threat of walking off the show even before the pilot started filming, to wear "sexy outfits" showrunners made for Sam. Amanda said Sam is wearing exact same uniform as the rest of the team or you can fire me right here right now. That was the cornerstone on which she built the character for a decade and a half.

And it worked. We now have hundreds of women in STEM whose inspiration was Samantha Carter.
