"So, Y/n, now that Johnathan and his family left Beacon Hills," You turn from your spot at Allison's vanity to face Lydia, who's sprawled over her bed with a nail file in hand. "what are your plans for the summer?"
You shrug, fussing with your hair in the mirror.
"Not sure." In truth, you really didn't know how you were gonna spend your summer.
For the past two summers, you split your time between hanging out with Lydia (and Allison as of last summer), and Johnathan, your once long term boyfriend. But in all truth, ducking in and out of his car for five minute make-out sessions wasn't exactly your favorite way to pass the time anyways.
But it sure as hell beat being bored. Which seemed like a guarantee this summer.
"Honestly, I'm kind of happy he left."
The words fall out of your mouth before you can stop them. Allison and Lydia share a knowing look, apparently neither of them surprised by the revelation.
"Good for you. He never really seemed like he wanted to be seen with you." Allison comments from her spot on the floor. Her brows are drawn in concentration as she resumes her task of painting her toenails.
Lydia's tongue darts out to wet her lips as she tilts her head. Her eyes shine a little as she stares at you with a cunning look. "I have an idea."
Your head is already shaking before she even stands from the bed. Her long red hair falls over her shoulders as she leans down close to you.
"No," You try to force a stern tone as you hold a hand out towards her. "Lydia, no. I've known you my whole life, I know that look."
Allison has stopped midway through her left foot, stare fixed curiously on Lydia. Lydia who is entirely undeterred by your protests. She places her manicured hands on your shoulders and grins in a way that you know means you've already lost this battle.
"We just have to find you a new boy toy."
You groan, head falling back in annoyance. "And where exactly do you propose we do that? The summer crowd at the Lucky Splits Bowling Alley?"
Lydia's eyes light up. "Better. The lake."
"The lake?" Allison pipes up. She's finally finished her toes and has leaned back onto her hands, looking at Lydia with intrigue.
"Think about it," Lydia says, already grabbing her phone. "I can tweet out I'm throwing a huge party. Everyone will be there. It's casual, but public enough that you won't feel pressured. You can pull someone aside for a... conversation."
You sit up, a mix of dread and excitement fluttering about in your stomach. "No, we can't just... throw a summer block party on a whim."
Lydia flashed you a bored look, already standing up and pulling open Allison's closet. "I'm Lydia Martin, of course I can. And we are. Now, you have one hour to get into a bikini that says 'I'm both available and devastatingly attractive'."
The best thing, perhaps the only good thing, about summer in Beacon Hills is the lake.
It's relatively clear and nestled in a little quarry-like area between two small mountains. It's a bit of a drive from the main part of town, but in the summer, it's where pretty much the entire school comes to hang out.
You grunt with force as you lift an ice chest full of wine coolers. Lydia borrowed her dad's truck for her lakeside bash and it's packed full of both liquor and a variety of foods.
"Remind me again how we got roped into this. Why can't the boys do this?" Allison's voice pops up from where she's just deposited three folding chairs onto the sand. The skirt covering the bottom half of her bikini blows in the breeze as she walks, dark hair haphazardly thrown into a last minute bun atop her head.
Your muscles are slightly sore from the effort of dragging now two chests and a table from the bed of the truck.
"Because," Lydia sighs from where she's currently tying up a volleyball net. "Stiles didn't answer my text which means he's busy either eating, or they're planning their next attack against whatever all powerful entity is after Beacon Hills next."
"Or both." You add, flashing a tight smile at Allison that says: 'Oh well'.
Just as you start towards the truck to continue offloading it, Stiles' jeep comes rumbling down the path to the lake. You're nearly certain that you can hear the sigh of relief that your back lets out at the promise of finally relaxing.
"Sorry we're late." Scott hops out of the jeep, flashing a smile at Allison that has her cheeks heating up as she grins back. As usual, the both of them are in their own world.
Stiles climbs out at the same time and Lydia huffs as she stomps over, likely to admonish him. You watch in amusement as her arms fly around wildly, Stiles immediately leaning back in slight fear. The dynamic between the two of them never fails to amuse you.
"Are they always like this?"
The sound of Isaac Lahey's voice makes you damn near jump out of your skin.
"Ah, sorry." His tone is low but you can hear the smile in his apology.
As you turn to face him, your mouth goes dry. He's come in nothing but his swim shorts, toned upper body on complete display. The sun casts a light shiny layer of sweat that you (ferally) realize you want to taste with your--
"Y/n?"
His head tilts slightly as he peers at you, obviously having caught you staring.
Now you're the one apologizing.
"Sorry! Uhm-- Yeah, they're always like this. All of them." You find your voice, smiling kindly at Isaac. He's the newest member of Scott's friend group and you can tell that he still feels out of place sometimes, although you can't imagine why with a face like his.
With the boys having joined, the setup for the party goes a lot quicker. Scott and Isaac load themselves up like mules while Lydia shows Stiles how to set up the drink and food tables.
You're with Allison, laying out the chairs and towels while chatting mindlessly.
"So... Isaac?"
The teasing lilt to her words has your eyes rolling damn near into the back of your head.
"Oh shut up." You're grinning as you speak, having grown quite close and comfortable with Allison over the last year.
"No no, I get it. He's... hot." You hum in appreciative agreement. Isaac is definitely hot. "I saw the way you were looking at him earlier but don't worry, I don't think Lydia noticed."
You nod, mouth pulled tight as you reflect. "It's just that he's so sweet and I don't know if I want anything serious right now. As awful as it sounds, what Lydia said about a boy toy sounds kind of nice."
Your voice is small. You've never really had anything like that with someone and it feels a little bit like using someone for their body.
"That's not awful, you have needs." Allison tosses you a cold water bottle, cracking one open herself and standing with her left hip popped out as she talks. "Look, he's hot. You're hot. And he's definitely just as into you as you are to him so maybe just talk to him. Be upfront about what you want. And if he's not down, then no harm."
Understanding fills your chest as you realize that it genuinely might just be that simple. "Yeah, you're right."
Your heart hammered against your ribcage as you watched Isaac laugh at something Scott said. Be upfront. Right. Easier said than done. You walk over to the cooler, grabbing a wine cooler for courage. As you approach, Isaac turns to you, his smile both easy and genuine.
"Having fun?" He asked.
"I am now," you said, the words coming out smoother than you expected. You lean in closer, lowering your voice. "Can I borrow you for a second?"
You nodded to a more secluded patch of trees lining the lake. He looked intrigued, and maybe a little nervous, but followed you nonetheless. Once you were out of earshot, the words tumbled out. "Look, I'm just gonna be blunt. I think you're incredibly attractive, and I'm not looking for a boyfriend, but I was wondering if you'd be interested in... a summer thing. No feelings, no expectations. Just... fun."
He stared at you for a long moment, a slow smile spreading across his face. "A summer thing?" He repeated, his voice a low rumble. "I think I can agree to those terms."
Isaac took a step closer, his chest brushing yours as he lowered his face until your lips were inches apart.
"When does it start?"
You're yanked back into the moment by the warmth of Isaac's breath against your neck as he spreads you over the hood of your car. This has been your entire summer: One of you on top of the other, completely devouring them.
The agreement was pretty straightforward. No feelings, no expectations. Just the two of you relieving some (or all) of the sexual tension that buzzed between you near constantly, and only for the summer.
Except now summer was nearly over. The days were slowly but surely getting shorter, the nights cooler. And you didn't want to say goodbye to Isaac yet. But you also didn't know if he felt the same way, and a lifetime of awkwardness with him was so not worth blurting out your feelings.
You moan, body arching right into Isaac's grasp as he sucks on the skin between your neck and collarbone. It's been his favorite spot all summer, hickey after hickey being left as soon as the previous one faded.
You'd scolded him for it exactly one time, and then he flashed you with a look that had somehow been both puppy dog eyed and darkly sensual at the same time. You hadn't mentioned it since then, instead electing to enjoy the idea of him marking you. The idea of him claiming you for more than just one night at a time.
In fact, somewhere in between the start of the summer and now, you found that you wanted him to stake a claim on you.
You weren't sure exactly when.
Maybe it was the morning that he practically yanked you from your sleep at the ass-crack of dawn to have sex at the lake as the sun rose. (When you close your eyes, you can still picture the rose hue of his skin as he took you on the shore, right out in the open).
Or, maybe it was when he yanked you in for a kiss in the middle of Lydia's Fourth of July Festival. The fireworks were booming but the world around you felt calm. It was the first time since the both of you decided to be discreet that he'd made a move on you in public. The cocky little smile he flashed you afterward was on replay in your brain for two weeks post kiss.
The longer you thought about it though, you were certain that you fell head over feet for Isaac the second that he damn near broke Stiles' arm for commenting on your chest. It was mid-ramble and you're sure Stiles didn't mean anything of it, but the second he'd said something, Isaac was on him.
And despite your two year long relationship with Johnathan, it was the first time a guy had ever stood up for you and made you feel protected. Safe.
You still remember the feeling of recognition that slapped you across the face when you finally acknowledged you had feelings for him. And though you tried to keep the same energy you always had, you knew Isaac could tell something was different, even if he didn't know what.
"Wait," Isaac pulled himself off of you, chest heaving as he panted. You wanted to ask why he stopped, but didn't trust your voice not to betray you so instead, you looked up at him with a patient look.
He stood completely, pulling you with him. The black tee he was wearing stretched over his broad shoulders, the fit tight enough that you could see his muscles moving as he crowded you between the car and his body. One warm, large hand gripped at the waist line of your shorts, the other coming up to grasp the side of your neck.
"You've been different lately."
Your mouth opened in protest but Isaac fixed you in place with a calculated look.
"And don't say you haven't. I can hear your heartbeat, you know? I let you brush me off a few times, but summer's ending."
You tried to quash the hopeful feeling in your heart at the disappointment in his tone. He could be disappointed for any number of reasons, it didn't necessarily have to do with you.
Your stomach is flipping, electricity seeming to tingle all across your skin as you rack your brain for a suitable excuse. This was supposed to be easy. No feelings, no expectations. It was perfect.
It should have been perfect.
Seconds too late, you realized that your mouth was open and your heart had jumped right onto your tongue, all brain logic apparently out the window.
"I like you."
Isaac's head visibly recoiled as a surprised look took over his face.
You took a deep breath. The damage was already done, and with that in mind you decided that maybe it was time to just take a leap of faith and hope Isaac would be there to catch you.
"And not in a friendly way. Not even in a friends with benefits way. I like you in a way that should be totally off limits to our... arrangement?" Your hands fly to your body as you start fidgeting with the bottom hem of your shorts, nervousness taking over into a ramble.
Isaac on the other hand looks completely taken aback, clearly not expecting you to say that.
"I know that we agreed it would be no strings and I know I should've said something before, but I was so worried about messing up what we had because the sex is so so good--"
Your words are cut off as Isaac pulls you into a kiss. It's not rushed or messy like they've been all summer. This one is slow and sweet in a way that says he wants to take his time with you.
"Finally." His smile is small but sure and smug, baby blue eyes finding yours with a teasing look.
You can practically hear the gears of your brain turning as it catches up to what just happened. "Wait, what? What do you mean finally?"
"I've liked you since before I agreed to do this with you."
You shake your head, confusion still fogging your mind.
"But... you agreed? To the no strings thing."
"Because," Isaac's hand travels to your lower back where he presses you impossibly closer to him. His voice is a low hum against the shell of your ear that makes you melt inside. "I was an idiot who thought one summer with you, even on your terms, was better than no summer at all and I was kinda hoping you'd change your mind."
The saccharine camber of his words makes you want to do nothing more than push your lips to his. And you do. When you finally pull back, his grin is so bright, it's nearly contagious.
Isaac’s teeth sink into his bottom lip as he gazes at you with a near palpable desire.
"Besides," He adds, his voice dropping back to that low rumble that makes your knees weak, "you're right. The sex is very good."
