I might make a longer post further explaining my thoughts on this but what if said that I honestly wasn’t too crazy about how they handled Kayo’s trauma induced facial dysmorphia? Specifically the idea that after swapping bodies with Ma, she didn’t have any further complexes about her appearance and that that symptom of her trauma was just completely gone.

Idk, its obvious that you can’t just swap bodies with someone irl but I figured the closest thing you could compare it to was facial reconstruction surgery and its not uncommon for people who undergo facial reconstruction after physical trauma to feel a weird sense of uncanny valley or physical imposter syndrome from looking at their new faces.

So I lowkey kinda prefer my own headcanon that although she knew she was objectively beautiful again now that she had Lukana’s body, and no longer saw the “scars” she was so insecure about, Kayo felt a weird sense depersonalization and altered facial image from just not being used to her face, something she might’ve overcome in life had she lived longer than a year after the body swap but that obviously never happened so yeah

-`♡´- While Kayo getting Lukana’s body did cure her insecurity about her “scars” and “no longer being physically beautiful”, it still introduced other complexes related to her appearance that were also influenced by her envy magic.

The biggest one being the fact that like her old body, her new body had signs of past childbirth (obviously from Lukana giving birth to her daughter all those centuries ago) which to Kayo, only served as a reminder that not only was her son still dead and gone but also that the original owner of her current body and her ancestor got the experience of raising her child, which Kayo never fully got, in a weird way creating this very distant envy for someone who had lived and died centuries ago.

Also, just seeing the other small barely visible signs of the other lives lived by other people in the same body through the centuries. That also created a weird dissonance accompanied by a sense of depersonalization and physical imposter syndrome for her (this is semi inspired by the experiences of some people who get facial reconstruction surgery after traumatic disfigurement, followed by the dissonance caused from not being able to recognize their new appearance as themselves even if they logically know its them). So while Kayo definitely felt she was beautiful again, she still had very complicated feelings about this body not being hers yet not fully reflecting that (it didn’t help that nobody else remembered her old appearance and were completely used to her looking the way she did now).

I came up with this HC because it always felt odd to me that once she switched bodies with MA, her relationship with her appearance was never brought up again even if it is a sort of minor theme in her story

When I was first reading the earlier Asoue books, I searched up Asoue online and read the snicketverse wiki. I only glanced at the terms Fighting starters and fire fighters, and thought that the two sides were in a secret pact the FS side would commit arson and the FF would put the fire out and gain fame.
