"Who You Love" - John Mayer ft. Katy Perry; Why the heternormativity?
So, I stumbled upon this new "love song" by John Mayer ft. Katy Perry - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=nSRCpertZn8.
It was shared on my News Feed, so I figured "why not watch it." I noticed the title "Who You Love," and thought what a great title for something that combats homophobia. Almost seems like a NOH8 slogan or the like. I mean, the chorus itself sounds like something out of Macklemore album - "You love who you love..."
BUT. Much to my surprise, every single couple in this video (except for what looks like one lesbian couple who has maybe three seconds of screen time and is severely underrepresented compared to the other couples) is a heterosexual couple. Granted, it battles the prejudices people may hold of couples from different racial or ethnic backgrounds, but it's missing something huge. It's missing the opportunity to use a perfect song and title to further advance the conversation for LGBTQ couples' - people who simply "love who they love," but are often refused the ability to do so.
Quite disappointed in John Mayer and Katy Perry at the moment.
Clearly whoever made this graphic hasn't been to China. 1.3 billion people soon become your intimate lovers everywhere you go.
My English writing and speaking has completely died after using Chinese for three months. English what is?
Tom Daley's recent video about his relationship with a man shows people the fluidity of sexuality. He says he still finds women attractive and "fancies" the ladies. However, he says that at this moment, he has found someone that has made him happier than ever and that person happens to be a guy. He never anticipated dating a man, but he realized that when someone makes you feel happy and safe, when you want to talk to them, and when you enjoy their company, then the sex is sometimes secondary.
Frank Ocean also mentioned last year how he found himself, at the time a straight teenager, in love with another guy. He never envisioned it and never saw other men as attractive, but clarified that it is possible to fall for someone of the same sex even if you are not gay.
You can have a relationship with someone of the same-sex and not be gay. Sexuality can be quite arbitrary, so take it as it comes.
…we must have forgotten that those who are impressed by money are not worth impressing.
