So how to begin ..

Well let's start with the core elements that make sparklepunk what it is.

Sparklepunk is a fantasy genre first of all , but a fantasy genre that embraces all that is girly originally it was built around a specific image but I've been tweaking it .

It can be about finding a way to blend those Disney-esque fairytale kingdoms and their spunky adventurous princesses with a touch of the far future (but with heaptons of fantasy and magic obviously). Futures powered by magic energy. Magic powered tech or tech that blends with magic. Princess gowns one day and bejeweled jeans and platform shoes the next..

Or it can be blending another modern or past setting with pink , sparkles and female leadership and a strong female presence.

Also at the core of sparklepunk is reclaiming what's considered traditionally "girly" to be awesome.

Yes I am inspired here by the attitude of people like Lauren Faust re girl's media. Girly doesn't have to mean lame.

I'm thinking limited too and Lisa Frank vibes applied to a futurey fantasy kingdom . In a society with gender equality and woman leadership.

LGBTQ acceptance? Naturally!

Some key points

- magic!! Good witches , alchemists, hell - female warlocks and wizards!!!

- the world/future is magical and PRETTY!

- ballgowns but also jeans and modern clothing

Mrs Darly's Inn is a magical boy manga about Emmett who runs away from his miserable life in a remote mining town where he and his brothers are forced to work in mines owned by a cruel owner. He misses his stop and ends up in Casa Villa, a little valley town run by a family of witches , the Sweetson sisters and their daughters, also heads of the powerful coven known as the Ladies Society. Darly Sweetson offers Emmett a job and a new purpose working for her and gaining powers. But soon he starts to wonder if he's only become enslaved by another owner.

Welp I had too much caffeine and Sparklepunk has three subgenres now. Oops.

- Princesspunk- Princesspunk is sparklepunk with an emphasis on Princesses and more explicitly based on the original fairytale esque vibe I based Sparklepunk on originally. Fairytale kingdoms with a progressive fantasy take are a must. The Princesses themselves must have agency and take action to get their own Happily Ever After™. Ohh and add unicorns , and pretty ponies . Always a must.

- Witchpunk- Sparklepunk based around mages that plays with the typical aspects of a witch with a fun sparkly twist (the Sparklepunk aesthetic if you will) .

- Jewelpunk - this is kinda loosely defined I guess but let me explain. Jewelpunk is all about jewels, gems, crystals and minerals and runic magic. It has the usual hallmarks of Sparklepunk but with a focus on magic and the earth. Aesthetics may involve architecture heavily featuring gemstone and mineral . Has strong themes of environmentalism along with Sparklepunk's feminine empowerment.

I will add notes as I think of more and may tweak these things.

So y'all might notice I've been tweaking the rules and qualifications of sparklepunk a bit

I decided I wanted to make it work with more than one kind of thing. Yes fairytale futuristic is what it started as. But hey ...why not make it work with a variety of vibes

The core is still the same . Its a rebellious, glorious celebration of all that is sparkly, pink (or rainbow) and "girly".

No "not like other girls" here. No "other girls" . Just girls (and femmes!).

Comic Contenders

So here's 5 comics (strips and webtoons) I plan to run as examples of this subgenre

Harmonious-Comic Strip- Runaway princess of Harmonia, Chase is looking to find her true origins, in the midst of conflict with the Fae. She doesn't know if she's prepared for what she'll find but she has her closest allies at her side if anything goes wrong.

Princess Academy-Comic Strip-Jenevieve's mother marries into a royal family of a parallel realm Arcania . Jen is convinced her distant and seemingly cold new stepfather is evil when he sends her to boarding school claiming it's 'tradition". However Princess Academy is not the kind of boarding school she expects.

Eight Roses-Comic Strip- In a fantasy kingdom, eight royal daughters to the King and Queen try to prove their merit to rule through grand adventures. The youngest sister has just turned sixteen and it is her turn to join in the family legacy. Cameo Rose wonders how she could possibly stand out amongst all her sisters.

The Jewel Princess- Comic Strip - Elle grew up apprenticing under a witch near a fallen kingdom . As she becomes a teenager she is sent on a seemingly impossible mission beyond her imagination, to retrieve the princess of the Fallen Kingdom to restore it. She is told that with the discovery of this lost princess, she will find the key to knowing her own past. Elle believes the legend of the fallen kingdom's princess is an old story but she is so desperate to know where she comes from.

Rainbow Roads- Comic Strip- Arielle and Danna grew up in relative luxury as the daughters of the court sorcerer and they were like sisters with the Princess of the utopian kingdom Destiny. But with a grim sounding prophecy spelling danger for the kingdom, they and Princess Kalliope are sent by a train and told to go to Prismia City. The two sisters , tasked with protecting a princess , are thrust into the high tech and prosperous city full of colorful roads with only the vaguest of instructions.

I'm sort of tweaking the definition of sparklepunk so it can work with a number of time period based settings. It's still fantasy-ish though and the main core of it is still being

A.) Shamelessly "femme/pretty"

B.) Female and femme stories where women and feminine characters are the heros.not the damsel, and not the prize, lost loved one, or motivation/plot device for your typical straight guy hero.

Princess Chase- The Princess, daughter of a King and Queen who always seem to have things to do. Chase wants to do something, and since her parents have the whole royalty thing covered, Chase would rather explore.

Jordan Hewitt- Chase's loyal best friend and royal personal attendant. Jordan is an alchemy mage with an interest in a kind of magic powered breed of crystal.
