That’s my corner of the fanfic world. You don’t want to go there unless you’re exceptionally sadistic like me and you like to see your characters tortured and sad, or unless you’re looking for a good cry.

It’s weird, but I find the best fics are in the angst category. Both story/content-wise and grammar-wise. I feel like some of the writers who write pure fluff-fics are teenaged girls who love gay pairings but never learned enough grammar to form a coherent story. That’s kinda mean, but it’s an observation.

I write angst fics because I think that you can squeeze a lot more meaningful story and meaningful emotion out of them, and your descriptions can be far more intense and far stronger than they can be in fluff fics or h/c fics. With angst fics, you’re trying to rip out the heart of the reader and throw off the top floor balcony, and in trying to do that, you can get some beautiful imagery and incredibly poetic and emotional writing. There’s a fic I read just before I left camp that I cried basically all the way through because it was so gorgeous. (And I don’t generally cry at fanfics because I enjoy the angst part of it.) The thing about angst fic as compared to fluff and h/c is that you’re trying to evoke the most intense emotions. You’re trying to increase the tension and the emotion and the intensity to a knife’s-edge and then you let it drop in the negative direction in the heaviest way possible. And that can create the most incredibly language and descriptions and character interaction.

I think angst just has far more potential than other kinds of writing, plot-wise and written word-wise. The stories are more plot-orientated, more character-orientated. The emotion is far stronger and because of that, the language and descriptions are prettier and more intense.

And I will stop gushing about angst fic now.
