I love the langblr community and honestly after a while you don’t even bat an eyelid when someone says they’re learning 4 languages at the same time. And then you feel like that’s what everyone does in their spare time, until you talk to someone irl and you’re like ‘oh yes I’m learning French, Russian, Danish, Arabic, Mandarin…!!’ and they’re like ‘are you okay???’ Then it hits you. And you remember that the average person doesn’t keep a bullet journal in three languages and cry over the smell of grammar books and you’re like OH. OK
“In front of my salad?” in different languages
reblog with your target/native language!
English - In front of my salad? Latin - Ante acētāria mea? German - Vor meinem Salat? French - Devant ma salade?
My favorite Shady/Illegal tips
*If you don’t have a stamp, reverse your destination and return addresses. The post office will deliver it to the return address for free
*One bag of garbage from a McDonald’s dumpster has hundreds of receipts in it, each of which has a survey. Submit each one for lots of free food
*Holding a cell phone to your ear justifies loitering. This aids in public urination, dumpster diving, stalking, trespassing, etc
*If you’re going to plagiarize, plagiarize something in a foreign language. Use a translator and spend a few minutes touching up the results.
*If they have free refills, save your cup. Next time you eat there, your drink is free.
*A plastic coffee stir stick can fool any push in coin acceptor that loads the coins on edge. Just insert stir stick, push the mechanism forward until you feel the stick hit a bump, push the bump down with the stick and push the mech all the way in
*If you look like you know what you’re doing, no one will bother you.
*When lying, always include something slightly embarrassing, or something that makes you look bad, as part of your story. It’s not only going to disarm their skepticism (admitting to something embarrassing gives an impression of humility), but even if they remain skeptical, they’ll be left wondering why you would make something up that you’d rather keep secret if it were true
*Using Clorox or any bleach will turn the red/pink liquid detection dot on electronic devices back to white so they replace them under warranty
* “A drug dealer in DC taught me to pick my nose if the police are staring at me. No one picks their nose if they think someone is watching them, so it’s the ultimate way of being nonchalant.”
* "I learned that you can get into almost any special event by wearing a chef coat. Even just carrying one and walking like you know where you’re going will work every time. Most people don’t want to look stupid by asking you who you are.“
* "My go to missing work call was never "I’m sick”, it was “Family problems”. They never questioned it, it’s vague enough and embarrassing enough that nobody ever asks.“
*As part of the employee training at Target, they teach you that if a customer argues over a price, and the full price is under $20, to just give it to them for whatever price they claim. It’s cheaper for the company to move on to the next customer than to call in a price check.
*Put a rolled up sock in the change slot on a vending machine, come back back 4 days later….and pull sock….you will be 6-ish dollars richer.
*If it’s a small lie, like who farted or who put the empty milk carton in the fridge, I’ll tell a terrible lie. I’ll not be able to hold a straight face, contradict myself, basically suck at lying. Now everyone I know thinks I can’t tell a lie to save my life. So when I really need a big lie, I nail it every time. No one ever suspects me when I lie straight faced.
*Bring crutches to an airport. Bypass every line (including boarding) and you are chauffeured to your gate the second you pass through security.
*Make up a secret to share with someone- they may open up and share far more valuable real secrets.
*Here’s a classic. Drive over to your 7/11 of choice. Fill up a Slurpee and drop some candy bars in that bitch. Make sure the candy bars aren’t showing. Cover the Slurpee and pay for it. Free Snickers bitch.
*I tell everyone i’ve never done any drugs. Suddenly everyone offers me cocaine, ecstasy, pot, lsd. I think i’ve had $200 worth of drugs each weekend for free.Same with liquor. "Im not drinking tonight” BOOM! Everyone gives me booze. Its like everyone wants to break your integrity as soon as you tell them you are not doing whatever they are doing.
*If you need to cash from an ATM and its not a large amount, buy a 5 cent piece of gum from a gas station that has the cash back option. Its cheaper than a $3 charge
*Act less intelligent than you really are. Acting stupid can get you out of some tricky situations. Feigning ignorance is way better than admitting you knew better but did it anyway. My old man used to say ‘It is easier to beg forgiveness than ask for permission’…sometimes it’s true.
*Every time I fly, when I land I’ll pen a little complaint to the airline that flew me. You know, I’ll come up with something like “oh, they denied me a drink! Oh, the food wasn’t vegetarian!” Whatever miscellaneous hogwash potpourri comes to my crazy brain. And like clockwork, within a business day, they’re reimbursing me with a $50 voucher, a $100 voucher, I can sell that on the secondary market.
*I’ve always had a lot of success in shutting nosy people up by blaming any personal issue on allergies. Crying from a panic attack? Allergies giving me puffy eyes. What’s that mysterious pill I’m taking? Allergy meds. Why am I acting spaced out/hungover/tired? Allergies meds making me drowsy.
*If you really wanna get away with some shit, buy a reflective vest, a white hard hat, and a clipboard. You can go ANYWHERE.
the education system wont really be teaching you important shit like this..
so let me be the one to do it…

Hey Richard! Got any good staccato exercises for the clarinet?
Get a book of Uhl studies. They’re not all for staccato but you can do them all staccato and they’ll help immensely. Other than that, scales are obviously always useful.
Triangle Translation
Triangle translation is a concept I randomly came up with when I was having lunch and thinking about language learning. It’s all about translating texts from one of your target languages to another language and helping others to do the same.
Here’s how it works:
Each “triangle” is a group of 3 people, person A, B and C. They can communicate in a group chat on Facebook, Whatsapp, Instagram, etc.
Person A
a native speaker of or fluent in Language 1 (e.g. German)
intermediate in Language 2 (e.g. Polish)
beginner in Language 3 (e.g. French)
Person B
a native speaker of or fluent in Language 2 (Polish)
intermediate in Language 3 (French)
beginner in Language 1 (German)
Person C
a native speaker of or fluent in Language 3 (French)
intermediate in Language 1 (German)
beginner in Language 2 (Polish)
So let’s say Person A writes a text in Language 3, which would be French here. They post it in the group chat and Person C, the French native, corrects their mistakes if necessary.
Person A is a beginner, which is why the French text (that is now corrected) is easy to understand for Person B, an intermediate French speaker. Thus, Person B translates it from Language 3, French, to Language 1, German.
Now, the native (or fluent) German speaker, Person A, proof reads the German text.
Then it’s Person C’s turn: they translate the German text (Language 1) to Language 2, Polish.
Obviously, you can also do it the other way round and translate texts from your “beginner” language to your “intermediate” language, or you can use “intermediate” languages only!
To sum things up, everyone receives texts in one of their target languages, translates them to another target language, and corrects mistakes in texts written in their native language.
Tips:
When reading and translating texts, make a list with unknown words and translate them. You can also add them to Memrise or an Anki deck.
Try to write about things you actually like to talk about - this way, you’ll learn useful vocabulary and you’ll really get to know the other people in the group chat!
If you run out of ideas, use some writing prompts.
Set a goal with your group: For example, try to write one text a week and post it on the group chat. If everyone does this you will have to write one text, translate two texts and correct three texts in one week.
How to find a “triangle” group:
If you’re very lucky, you already know two people whose languages match yours - if you don’t know anyone or you simply want to get to know new people, send me a message containing the following information:
Name and age (I can try to find partners who are about the same age as you. You do not have to tell me your age, but if you don’t, this will obviously not be possible.)
Contact information (tumblr/usernames on other social media/email)
Native language(s)
Fluent language(s)
Intermediate language(s)
Beginner language(s)
Other information
As soon as I find a partner for you, I will send their information to you and yours to them.
I hope you like this idea - if you have any questions, just ask!
Keeping the fading language alive
This week, “Let’s Learn Náhuatl” (Ma tiwelikan nawatl), was officially released, an app created to teach and preserve the indigenous Mexican Nahuatl language.
“In a sub-conscious way, you’ll know some Náhuatl , you’ll have heard the greetings, numbers, some verbs, maybe the animals, body parts, types of maize or scared places that govern the Nahuatl world.”
The project is the result of a collaboration between Manuvo, the National Institute of Indigenous Languages, and the Laboratory of Digital Citizenship, and offers a playful experience for those interested in learning Náhuatl words and expressions (which originated in Acatlán, Guerrero).
The graphics were designed by the design collective Metzican who created all the visuals that accompany the application. They highlight the nuances between the various Mexican communities whilst carefully avoiding clichés.
Presently in Mexico there are around 1,586,884 speakers of náhuatl or mexikatl (‘mexicano’) living across the country. The aim of this initiative is to utilise technology as a mechanism to “disseminate and generate interest in the indigenous languages, the community’s way of living and the cosmology of the indigenous villages in Mexico”.
Also in development is an app to learn purépecha, (the language spoken mainly in the northwestern region of Michoacan) which will similarly represent the identity of the village.
The app “Let’s Learn Náhuatl” is available to download for free on IOS and Android. For more info, check out Manuvo.
FYI, they have Purepecha and Mixtec

There are some GREAT apps out there for Native languages.
I have an iPhone - the Native language apps I have are for Anishinaabemowin (Ogoki, Neechee), Chickasawanompa, Choctawanompa, and Mvskoke.

Guys, here’s a fun tip, if you really want to get ahead in your AP classes over the summer (even though I know most of you procrastinate in ridiculous amounts, like me) if you just google the name of your AP class, for example, AP Biology and click the APCentral/Collegeboard link it will take you to the “Professionals” or teachers page and there are course reviews and course guide PDFs on there that basically tell you everything in the course and it’s pretty great.

Civil War Casualties
A few odder facts about the American Civil War’s killed and injured
the first deaths of the U.S. Civil War did not take place on the battlefield. On April 19, 1861, four Union soldiers were stoned to death in Baltimore by a mob of rebel sympathizers.
the first battle of the American Civil War, at Fort Sumter, was also the least bloodless of the war, with no deaths or injuries.
the person who fired the first shot of the American Civil War, Confederate Edward Ruffin, committed suicide after the Confederate surrender at Appomattox
in the Battle of Cold Harbor, 7,000 Americans were killed in the span of 20 minutes.
