Sol A : so what’s your type?
Joon Hwi : kind, passionate, dumb, good sense of humor
Sol A : that sounds like me. too bad we’re just friends.
Joon Hwi : …….did i mention dumb?
Sol A : yeah
Joon Hwi : okay just making sure
Some people fell in love at first sight, then there are those who fell in love at first recite:
Why Han Joon Hwi is the best lead I've seen in a while.
First things first, he's played by Kim Bum.
He doesn't trust anyone, but he doesn't necessarily assume the worst about everyone either. In most kdramas, it's always one extreme or the other.
He has a "cold" personality but he isn't an asshole. Being naturally more of a chill nature isn't necessarily equal to having a nasty personality, and this is portrayed brilliantly through this character.
He doesn't have savior complex but plays smart. He isn't on anyone's side but the one guided by his own moral compass. He also doesn't believe on saving people who won't save themselves. Which leads me to the enct point.
He's a fairy God mother to those he decides fit his moral compass. What I mean by this is that while he does not have a savior complex, he isn't someone who will see someone suffer if he knows he has the means to help them figure out the situation themselves. This is evident whenever he helps Kang Sol A, he doesn't give her the answers but leads her down the right path to get them and when she does, he gives her more tools to back up her reasoning (seen with the pro Bono trial and with Jeon Ye-Seul situation).
He doesn't hold unnecessary grudges but he knows how to keep people at an arms' distance. Seen mostly with Professor Yang and Ji Ho.
He's a smart cookie all around, and very in tune with everyone's emotions.
Bringing back his moral compass, he doesn't change it easily, even when it's challenged. This is both a bad and good trait, however, so far in the series, it has helped him figure out stuff that some other people would have overlooked.
He knows how to play the system while being in the system, without breaking it or using it for evil, which is why he makes Professor Yang's perfect student, they know how to play their hands. Un other words, he's the true definition of true neutral.
He also isn't above using dirty tactics to get what he wants, but as he's a true neutral, he knows how to make them come back to this ambiguous neutrality he always makes use of (seen with how he handled the reporters and Ye Seul's abusive boyfriend)
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk, please give my Kim Bum some love and watch him in Law School.
han joon hwi in every episode of law school (2021) ⠀ ↳ episode five
The state must take responsibility for the child’s survival, thus making this a public issue.
lets talk about joon hwi's "i'm grateful for her"
disclaimer: as always i might be making a stretch but this was just my interpretation. please ignore any typos or grammar mistakes. also credits to @cathartichaoss on a previous post of mine for bringing this up and it really got my thoughts rolling on this scene!!
okay i know we're making fun of joon hwi's "i owe her" bit but on a real note, i don't think that is meant in a we're just friends way like we're seeing it.
in most romance kdramas, the declarations of love are more explicit and often exaggerated, but what we have to remember with law school is that the drama isn't centered around romance. solhwi is a portrayal of a realistic friends to lovers arc, where their love is gradual and the shift from friends to lovers is blurred together. their relationship is growing in the background of the main plot, which is why we see their relationship develop through smaller moments (getting drunk together and sol revealing her issues with her grades, working side by side to solve a case, sol using joon hwi as a person to bounce ideas off of at the legal clinic) rather than grand gestures (by grand gestures i mean very explicit declarations of love, buying flowers, kissing in a very dramatic moment).
for those who have watched vincenzo and was a chayenzo shipper, you'll see that sol A and joon who's relationship grows very gradually throughout being there for each other, and i think most notably, this show doesn't show a point where "everything changed for the two of them" or one moment where the realized they loved each other (similar to vincenzo and cha-young's relationship). joon hwi has very gradually grown to like her presence and we can see that from their bickering friendship in ep 1 to now where he is on call for her at any time, putting up cctv for her and making hangover soup when one is drunk. much like a realistic friends to lovers, there is no one moment where they fall for each other, they've actually been falling for each other the whole time.
this brings me to the scene where sol B asks "why are you trying so hard to persuade me? why do you care so much about my roomie?" and he replied that he is "grateful for her." As we've seen from the previous episodes and even the events building up to this scene, Sol B isn't a very expressive girl. BUT she still cares about her friends in the study group, seen through her comforting ye-seul in the way she could and her standing up for sol A when her classmate calls her an ex-convict. in the same way sol A shield's her roommate, sol B does the same towards her. i believe that sol B knows that joon hwi is in love with sol A; pretending otherwise is a disservice to her intelligence and keen mind. her asking joon hwi why he's trying so hard is more than just a simple question. what she's asking here is "why are you in love with sol A? what is it about her that you like?" in a protective way. i interpreted it as her asking what his intentions with her roommate is. sol B is looking out for her roommate in her own way and asking why he likes her.
and joon hwi knows this, he understands what she's asking so he gives her an honest answer without his explicit confession. he tells her how grateful he is for her and it flashes to a scene that displays sol A's courage, her resilience, her loyalty, her compassion. she is making a risk because of him, and their study group. and the anger she expresses in assemblyman ko's involvement in the ruination of prosecutor seo, who joon hwi idolized and loved so much, connected with him. he's seeing that she cares so much for him and seeing her so passionate and loyal is the reason why he is grateful to her. you can see the camera shift to his expression during this scene and it looks as if he's truly seeing her for the very first time. this scene is showing the qualities that joon hwi loves the most about sol A, the characteristics that he admires and made him fall for her.
then of course we have the "i owe her. and i don't like owing people." i believe that this is conveying his shock at how much he actually cares for her. i believe before that moment he flashes back to, he assumes it more as a schoolboy crush, rather than him actually being in love with her. he's expressing that how he feels with sol A is new to him and the way he feels for her is different to anything he has felt before (therefore explaining why he says why he doesn't like it/he isn't comfortable with the realization). and sol B goes through with the justice mock trial with the understanding that joon hwi is in love with sol A and understanding that he is the right one for her roommate.
ultimately, solhwi nation, do not be afraid. we will be getting our endgame couple and having a good ending for them. they have so much development throughout the show, and this scene was a confirmation that there is something between them and an official confirmation of his feelings for her.
Unknown caller: We have your child
Prof Yang: I don’t have a child
Unknown caller: Then who is this giving us impromptu lecture on defamation cases?
Prof Yang: Oh my god they have Sol A!
(credit- @confusedsoulsramblings )
Sol A : [ does something ridiculous ]
Joon Hwi : Great, like I needed to get any more attracted to you?
Sol A : ……what?
Joon Hwi : ANNOYED. ANNOYED BY YOU. THAT’S WHAT I SAID
Sol A : The food is too hot, I can’t eat it.
Joon Hwi : You’re too hot and I still eat you.
Sol A : *blushes*
Joon Hwi : *winks at her*
Sol B, slamming her hands on the table : ONE DINNER. ONE PEACEFUL DINNER IS ALL I ASK.
Sol A, sighs : No one really loves me.
Han Joon hwi : Are you sure?
Sol A : yeah
Han Joon hwi, aggressively pointing at himself : ARE YOU REALLY FUCKING SURE ABOUT THAT ?
How should I put it? It was bittersweet but before I go any further, I'd like to say, I am satisfied with the ending. For me it was a:
SolHwi ending
Let's start then.
In the most law school kdrama fashion, the show has not given us any confession or any direct indication that they are together. What the show has given us though is the most definite possibility of SolHwi.
They gave us everything we needed to put the puzzle together and see for ourselves beyond reasonable doubt.
1. Attraction:
The body language and the dialogue did not leave anything to our imagination.
2. Wanting:
By the time third year comes around, Sol is now looking for ways to spend time with Joon. Wanting to spend time, not just having to spend time.
3. Companionship:
Sol basically told Joon that she will be there for him, in place of his uncle, his (most likely) only family, now gone. That she will be his family.
Look at Joon. He is amazed and grateful at the same time that there is someone who understands him to this level.
I am not saying that this means that they are together. What I am saying is that this is more than enough for me to understand that they are made for each other.
Before this episode, I was struggling to understand what Kim Beom meant by 'they are soulmates' because I was not able to reconcile many of their scenes with 'soulmates who are friends'.
I understand it now.
They are soulmates as in, they are each other's friend and confidant and they would be lovers, family and partners in life.
Personally, JTBC law school gave me a happier SolHwi ending than what I expected. For a show like it, they gave me more than was expected.
I feel like that is what the show wanted us to do - figure it out ourselves.
Beyond a reasonable doubt.
han joon hwi in every episode of law school (2021) ⠀ ↳ episode four
do you guys realize that right after sol A aired all of her grievances to joonhwi in the school hallway, he literally addressed all of them (all of them) in the most ‘han joonhwi’ way possible? which is to say, letting the actions speak louder than words, sprinkled with a little bit of teasing.
when sol A said she was struggling with studying, joonhwi offered to study with her, but not before joking around with her a bit first (by letting her carry his papers and his bag).
when she complained about not being in the know about the Bad FaMa case, joonhwi was just somehow in the room with sol A whenever he’s talking to the client on the phone - probably to keep her updated on the case without outrightly ‘bothering’ her about it. this happened not once, but twice. first, he sought her out in the cafeteria, and the second time, it was during their group study session.
and when she was in the hospital, he showed her what the client had to say about her proposal. hitting two birds with one stone, he pretty much said two things without actually saying it: 1) that sol A was smart enough to study for her exams and still help the client with the case, which was what she was worried about in the first place, and 2) that he was concerned about her. (but of course, you’d never hear him say it out loud.)
looking back at it, even though we all squeal and swoon at these little moments, it’s such an effective way of showcasing the pair’s dynamic and building their characters. their individual personalities shine through in the way they approach the problems in their life, with sol A tending to work harder than everyone else (even if it meant at the expense of her health), with joonhwi silently watching over her as he dealt with the things that he could control, probably because he didn’t want sol A to think that he was giving her an advantage over everyone else. still, we see right through the act. we all know he’s whipped.
i could go on and on about what i love about this show, and what i love about solhwi. i hope this is all a conscious decision in part of the writers, actors, and directors, and i really hope they’re not baiting us. i better see solhwi endgame by episode 16, otherwise, what was all this development for?
