ponyboy thinks that steve hates him, but he doesn’t see what soda sees.

soda sees steve bring home grapes from the market. he obviously stole them — darry rarely let them buy fruit since it was expensive, so they mostly lived off of bananas — but that’s not the part that counts. the thing is, pony is the only one in the group that likes grapes. he raves about them like they’re magic and finishes them all in a day and a half. steve would definitely get arrested if he got caught stealing them, since he always picks the crunchiest ones, just the way pony likes them. pony always thanks soda for bringing them home, and soda wants to tell him the truth, but steve always catches his eye and shakes his head, begging him not to.

soda sees steve walk past a nice leather notebook in a window and stop. “pony’d like that, wouldn’t he?” steve asks. soda gives a little grin and nods, and watches as steve walks in and asks the nice lady at the counter to put it on hold until his next paycheck comes in. soda doesn’t have the heart to remind him that his next paycheck would hardly cover a quarter of that notebook.

soda sees steve put up missing poster signs all over town when pony and johnny go to windrixville. he watches steve go door to door and ask people if they’ve seen a scrawny kid with reddish hair come through. he watches steve grow more and more anxious the longer ponyboy’s gone. then he sees steve light up when he first reads the paper, when he realizes that pony is coming home.

pony doesn’t see any of this. soda wishes he did. steve is glad the kid always has his damn head in the clouds — it lets him keep up his tough guy act for a little while longer, at least.

Ok but like imagine if you will: disabled veteran Sodapop and Two-bit becomes a part time caretaker for him... yes...yes..

I just remembered it's Superbowl Sunday so uhhhh

Curtis Gang Superbowl HCs 🏈

Darry has been prepping for this since Thanksgiving TRUST

Like he doesn't care who's playing, it's the biggest game of the year/season, he will NOT be missing it

Makes soooo many snacks it's wild. All his momma's recipes too because it'd be criminal not to

Everyone also brings stuff (half of it is stolen). The table is on verge of collapsing from the weight of food

Dallas is always assigned the task of bringing the booze because Two-Bit will pop it open before he even steps out of the store with it

The only day Soda drinks other than 4th July, because why tf not? Darry's too focused on the TV to care anyways

BETS ARE MADE EVERY YEAR usually Darry wins but occasionally Johnny makes one offhand and ends up being exactly right

Speaking of, Johnny and Pony usually just stay in Pony's room all day because A) neither of them really care for football THAT much, and B) Johnny doesn't like how loud the others get

So like imagine Johnny and Pony playing a card game while muffled yells from Darry and Steve, Two-Bit laughing, and a glass breaking are heard in the bg

(sneaking Stevepop in here shut up) Yk how there's the New Years kiss tradition? Yeah, so Soda and Steve do that too but with the Superbowl. Basically, if the team they root for wins, they kiss. If the team loses… They still kiss tbh they're both too hammered to care

Everyone def sleeps over that night and then stays home from school/work the next day because they're all hung over. Except Darry cuz he can't afford it

ok but consider this. horse!pet regressor Ponyboy and handler!Sodapop.

Sodapop brushes Pony's pretty blonde mane and braids it the best he can and feeds him cut up apples from his hand. He gives Ponyboy sponge baths cause he's afraid to be submerged in water. and that's how you groom a horse, anyhow. When Ponyboy gets spooked or triggered Soda just scratches his cheek and whispers all soft til his breathing slows down. Darry can't wrap his head around it, but he plays into it cause he just wants his baby to be ok.
