Digital painting done for the original sapphic romantasy zine "In Her Arms" by @xochitai-zines. I ended up creating two characters that would fit into the world I made for a fantasy novel I wrote vaguely inspired by the 30 Years' War (currently doing the rounds of agents; we'll see if it gets picked up by anyone). They're two mercenaries from the same company, taking a breather during campaign season. The woman whose face you can see is a higher officer--a captain or lieutenant--and the one with her hair in a scarf is...not one of the lower-ranking members of the company, but possibly an accountant or something like that. I won't decide until I need to--feel free to come up with your own interpetations!
(Yes, 17th century mercenary and army companies had accountants. How else do they keep track of the loot shares and payroll? Not that pay was particularly reliable during the 17th century wars as supply lines were fragile, captains pocketed a lot, and war is just so damn *expensive*. Failure to pay the soldiers was one of the main reasons for mutinies, which at the time were closer to labor disputes than what we think of as mutiny now. This has been your historical fact for the day.)
