Poet Mary Oliver passed away today. Her work, emblematic of a life colored by mystery, spirituality and a deep bridge to the natural world, taught us all to see better, and to examine what was learned in the seeing. Of poetry, she said that it mustn’t be fancy, reminding us instead to let “the soft animal of your body love what it loves.” In her poem, “When Death Comes,” Oliver reflected with this smooth stone, “When it’s over, I want to say all my life/ I was a bride married to amazement.“ Thank you, Mary, for urging us to notice the mundane and teaching us how to use language to understand and embrace it.
