I like to think that the reason that Sherlock in the original canon references various literature is solely because of Moriarty, and thus why he originally pretends to Watson that he has no knowledge of it whatsoever in A Study in Scarlet.

It was originally thought to be a plothole that Sherlock is described as having no literary knowledge, yet later quotes Walt Whitman and Shakespeare. But with Young Sherlock alluding to Sherlock picking up on Shakespeare from James, I feel like it would make sense to headcanon most literary references attributed to books James got Sherlock to read or directly quoted at him.

After all, despite Sherlock in Young Sherlock canonically reading Oliver Twist, he seems like he’d mostly read nonfiction (mixture of scientific works, philosophy, and historical accounts) and more adventure focused works like epics, and James would read a lot more fiction and poetry (like @captainfairygodmother’s headcanon with James sending Sherlock a copy of Dorian Gray later down the line!).

it’s because house md is based off of sherlock holmes. holmes is based off of joseph bell, a scottish physician that arthur conan doyle was taught under who could figure out his patients malady by his powers of deduction. so it all goes full circle! house = home = holmes, john watson = james wilson
