I love having novel experiences. Like last weekend my partner took me to a chamber music concert and the usher insisted on seating us really close to the front. Unfortunately I have a sleep disorder and have always struggled to stay awake in low-stimulation environments like big lectures and calming music performances. I was doing fine for the parts of the program that included a vocalist or instruments in conversation with each other, but then the pianist played a 22-minute set of solo pieces and I knew I was fucked if I didn’t engage my brain while she played…so anyway I’d like to think I’m the only person in human history now who has sat in the American Philosophical Society thinking really intensely about Trevor Zegras getting railed during a performance of Schumann’s Waldszenen, Op. 82.
