Shem Rajoon
I am originally from Trinidad and Tobago and am one of 13 siblings. I moved to the United States when I was 11 and was immediately exposed to new media while volunteering for a youth led online news publication called HarlemLIVE. Through the experience and exposure to media and technology at HarlemLIVE, I was able to complete an apprenticeship for an AmeriCorp organization called Public Allies where I participated in leadership training and community service for the Fund for the City of New York.
After completing my apprenticeship I applied to Parsons and have since created an organization of my own called Soulful Arts Inc, where our mission is to inspire, entertain and educate youth through performing arts that show expression through movement. In addition to furthering my education, I facilitate multiple programs throughout New York City working with youth from elementary through high school.
I was asked to become a part of the URT team after having a wonderful spring semester during my freshmen year under the leadership of Jessica Irish. I am currently a sophomore and my role in this project is to design the user experience and develop the front-end code for the new interface. I hope to use my experiences in media, technology and community development to help design a solid tool that can be used on both an educational and local level.
