Haikyuu!! Observations: Koganegawa and Tsukishima
**SPOILERS FOR ANIME ONLYโS BELOW**
Since season 4 of Haikyuu!! started, Iโve quickly decided I love Kanji Koganegawa from Date Tech. Heโs like their version of Shoyo Hinata:
Heโs super energetic and Optimistic:
He does mess up, but still gives it his all:
His goal is to be EVERYONEโS friend:
Seriously, this social butterfly wants NAKAMA! *Friends Theme Plays*
And like Hinata, heโs not afraid to ask others for advice, either. Itโs interesting that both Shoyo and Koganegawa are the ones showcased for seeking tips from other players during the training camp.
Setting the Stage (pun intended):ย
I thought during the pre-Nationals match of Karasuno vs. Date Tech, one of the most interesting asides was Hinataโs side comment that when Koganegawa had been the setter during the Training Camp, that Tsukishima had been made to jump higher because of Koganeโs sets, compared to Kageyamaโs.ย
Naturally, Kageyama was frustrated, because this meant that Tsukishima couldย jump higher to hit the ballโฆhe just hadnโt been all this time while Kageyama was setting.ย
A lot of readers and viewers may see theย โBoy Ball Arcโ as having been filler or not necessarily important before the Nationals Arc. However, I maintain that Furudate planted SO MANY seeds of foreshadowing in this mini-arc, and I want to share one of my favorites, here.
The Chicken and the Frog:
In Chapter 378, we learn this about Tsukishima, forever sealing his redemption in the series as one of the best; Iโm not crying, youโre crying:
Heโs a Middle Blocker for the Sendai Frogs Division 2 League.ย
And THEN, eight chapters later in Chapter 385, we get this reveal:
Yeah, so Koganegawa is going to be the SETTER for the Sendai Frogs.
Heโs going to toss the ball to Tsukishima.
I have this headcanon that Tsukishima probably thought he was free of Hinataโs endless optimism and energy to annoy himโฆonly to now find himself playing alongside the sunniest rooster of Date Tech.
However, I really think Tsukishima will be fine with it at the end of it all. Why?
Because Koganegawa is from Date Tech, and is opposite Kageyama.
One, Tsukishima definitely respects, though frustrated by, Date Techโs defensive prowess; particularly since itโs his strongest attribute as a player.
ย But also, Koganegawa is probably the mostโฆjovialโฆof the setters in Haikyuu!! Heโs not serious, mysterious, boisterous, or manipulative. He just tries his hardest and is very down to earth. Much like Date Tech. Tsukishima clearly was not Kageyamaโs biggest fan on the team, and their lack of being able toย โgelโ definitely lent to tense moments on the court and Tsukishima not givingย โ120%โ for his sets.
However, with a setter he respects, that simply will do what he can for TsukishimaโฆTHAT could be something intriguing to see. Basically:
top five lines in jjk?
I fucking love this ask, so thanks anon! JJK is filledย with so many good lines that it was honestly hard to pick them. Also, please forgive me for majorly nerding out on this ask.ย This is tagged with jjk spoilers, but to reiterate: MAJOR MANGA SPOILERS!
My top 5 lines in jjk:
1. Itadori:ย
โIโm sorry, Nanamin. I was about to take the easy way out. I was about to use my sins as an excuse to run away. Iโll be sure to take on your share of the suffering too, Nanamin.โ
This line fucking killsย me. Everything from it coming right after Nanaminโs death (and maybe Kugisakiโs????) to Itadori almost giving up to Todo being the one to be there right to save him rightย when he needed it most to the panel itself with Itadori standing with Nanamin. And it comes after Todo gives Itadori that really moving monologue about needing to find what heโs been entrusted with and telling him that he canโt stop until he does so it makes it extra heartbreaking. This is Itadoriโs goodbye to Nanamin ๐ฅบ and him making a promise that heโll do what Nanamin entrusted to him with his dying words. This is the line in all of jjk that just sticks with me.
2. Geto:ย
โIf being a jujutsu sorcerer is like running a marathon, what if whatโs at the end of that road is a mountain of our fellow sorcererโs dead corpses?โ
Geto is absolutely the most heartbreaking character in all of jjk. He went from being a dutiful jujutsu sorcerer who obeyed the rules and protected humans without a second thought to a curse user who wanted to kill allย humans and ended up being killed by his best friend before his corpse was taken over as a puppet by some villain. This is my fave line from the entire Hidden Inventory Arc because it reveals Getoโs state of mind toward the end of the arc, which is that heโs so tired of watching his friends and innocents die and heโs so sick of the system thatโs willing to let it all happen. Thereโs this great analysis about Geto and Gojo that I would really recommend everyone check out here.ย
3. Nanamin ๐ฅบ:ย
โIf you continue in this line of work, there will come a time when youโre forced to kill a person. But this is not that time. Please understand this. Being a child is not a sin.โ
I think Gege is so masterful at a lot of things that really set jjk apart from other typical shonen manga. But the thing I love most is how much jjk tries to really emphasize that the main characters are a group of teenagers and itโs wrongย for kids to be forced to willingly lay down their lives and dirty their hands. Nanami gets that. Throughout the entire vs. Mahito arc, heโs constantly bringing up Itadoriโs age (much to Itadoriโs annoyance) but itโs not because he doesnโt think Itadoriโs not ready to do the dirty work of a jujutsu sorcerer, itโs because at his age, Itadori shouldnโt haveย to. And this line shows just how much Nanami cares and wants to preserve Itadoriโs youth and innocence. I love how it ends:ย โBeing a child is not a sin.โ The sin isnโt being a child -- itโs forcing children to act older than they are.
4. Gojo:ย
โYour body and even your cursed energy. My Six Eyes tell me youโre Geto Suguru. But my soul knows otherwise!โ
Ugh. This one hurts. We spent all that time with Gojo and Geto and watching their friendship and seeing how close they were. And then just a few panels before this, we get the callback to Volume 0 and how Gojo had to kill his best friend with his own hands. And so of courseย Gojo would know that this Geto is a fake, even when his Six Eyes are telling him that this Geto is real -- because Gojo knowsย Geto. And then the reveal that follows? To find out whatโs actually been done to Getoโs body? ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ Itโs absolutely heart-wrenching for us andย Gojo.ย
5. Todo:ย
โThe sound of the Gion Shoja bells echoes the importance of all things. The color of the sala flowers reveals the truth that the prosperous must decline. However, we are the exception!โ
Thereโs this really great post on reddit about this whole line and what it means that I would recommend everyone checking out. The first part of this quote comes fromย The Tale of the Heikeย and in the original context, itโs talking about essentially the transient nature of all things being divine law. But Todo flips it here by saying,ย โWe are the exception!โ referring to him, Itadori, and their bond. Something that the reddit post mentions is that altering a classical text like this could be considered extremely arrogant but that in the context of jjk, it just underlines one of the mangaโs major themes -- the conflict between the newer generation of sorcerers against the older generation who is willing to sacrifice them in order to keep their grasp on power.ย
Honorable mentions:
โThe sparks of black do not choose who to bless.โ - caption after Mahito uses Black Flash for the first time
โThe ability to realize oneโs innate domain without using a barrier is akin to an artist painting a masterpiece not on a canvas, but on air. A truly divine technique.โ - caption about Sukunaโs domain
โNo, Haibara. Thatโs not right. I canโt say that to him. Itโll just end up becoming a curse for him.โ - Nanami
โNot Zenโin, huh? Good for you.โ - Toji
If any of you have fave jjk lines, I would seriously love to hear them so we can nerd out together โค๏ธโค๏ธ
this chapter lives rent free in my mind so now I'm gonna talk about it
(discussion of jjk chapter 64 below, doesn't really contain spoilers tho)
this is such a small and seemingly inconsequential moment for yuji, but it really does so much for him as a character. I feel like most of the time when a male character has an ideal type it just shapes his interactions with women altogether for the rest of the series: either he views them as "his type" or "not his type" and interacts accordingly, or he learns to treat them all equally despite not being attracted to them. however here yuji completely dismisses his type: he sees ozawa not in relation to what he likes, but just as her own person, who does day to day things elegantly for her own enjoyment, and he appreciates it for what it is.
he knows her name and her mannerisms despite not being attracted to her and when he sees her again after some time he still recognizes her despite her drastic change in appearance, over which he doesn't comment, even though she'd now be his type, instead asking her how she's doing.
he views others, with no distinction between men and women, as their own individual and not an object for his enjoyment or gain. he will observe them and remember their peculiarities simply because he cares and loves doing so.
by using something as superficial as his type, akutami pulled the strings laid out until then for yuji's character, showing how observant and sensitive he actually is. how much people and their individuality, their heart, matter to him. why it hurts him so bad when a life is lost.

โI think everyone in the crowd was shocked. But we werenโt. In a contest of speed, where every tenth - no every hundredth - of a second countedโฆ those two, and only those two, didnโt blink. Speed is a very, very powerful weapon. Itโs alluring. It looks really cool. But it isnโt invincible.
Those two know that better than anyone else.โ
In Tsukkiโs caseโฆ I think heโs been using the first two sets to tell the guys in the back:ย โthis is Suna Rintarouโs counter-cross shot.โ
