AirNow is your one-stop source for air quality data. Our recently redesigned site highlights air quality in your local area first, while sti
AIR QUALITY WARNING
Hey fellow Northeasterners on Turtle Island, aka the USA and Canada! Recent wildfires are spreading smoke and dangerous air conditions across New England. I only realized this because of social media, so I'm spreading the news further with maps for visuals. Things are officially UNHEALTHY so everyone needs to be careful, especially anyone with heart or lung conditions.
If you're in NY, MA, RI, CT, NJ, etc, please be careful!
Close your windows (consider sealing them if it's really bad)
Wear respirator masks (ex N95s) outside
Turn on air filters if you've got them
Use fans inside to keep cool and keep air moving
Check for air coming in around window AC units! You can probably still use your AC, but remember that their filters generally don't block smoke.
Remember, wildfire smoke doesn't just include burnt up trees but can include all kinds of hazardous materials, so the less outside air inside your house the better. If you've got any DIY Corsi-Rosenthal Boxes around for COVID-19 filtration, they excel at filtering out other dangerous particles too. Here's a diagram for making one, :
Also, try to avoid strenuous activities (ex moving furniture, climbing lots of stairs, etc) and listen to your body's needs. If you need to lay down and do nothing for a while, go for it. Stay hydrated, especially if your throat is getting scratchy! If you've got asthma, make sure your meds are close by.
Take care of yourselves and each other out there!
@ Ontario & Quebec friends/followers, this applies to us too. we're still under the special air quality statements/warnings here in southwestern Ontario
i also initially found out through social media (and it's easy to underestimate how bad the air is until you actually experience it. trust me, it's bad)
stay safe out there friends
(apologies i keep accidentally reblogging things here when i got to fast-reblog shit to my main blog and i know that's not why any of y'all followed me but oops)
we figured out Roman concrete btw. This is the only thing on my mind
Oh? Do tell?
HOKAY. Doing this in laymanās terms because I could not explain the chemistry in detail if I tried. Pls forgive if Iām a little off in the explanation because idk chem lol
So weāve been trying to figure out why the fuck Roman concrete has held up so long, right? Our concrete lasts maybe like ten years before it looks like it took a wrecking ball to the face. And even then, our roads suck in general. Universally. Potholes. Everywhere.
Roman concrete has lasted two thousand years. Or more. Depends on where you go.
Now a bunch of scientists took chunks of concrete and threw a bunch of waves at it to figure out the composition, and turns out the concrete has lime in it. At first they were like āHuh, thatās weird, why are these imperfections in this super durable long-lasting concrete?ā
So anyways they dismissed the lime, and they also figured out that Roman concrete is suuuuuper strong in water. Like it gets stronger in water. Compare that to our shitty ass concrete. Our concrete suffers in water. Itās shit. Our concrete is a middle-schoolerās newspaper bridge project compared to the Bifrost that is Roman concrete.
Now, because chemical composition is fairly easy to figure out, they found volcanic ash. We donāt have volcanic ash in our concrete (as far as I know), so idk I guess they thought that was the differential factor that made Roman concrete so strong. To my understanding, the Romans used hydraulic mortar rather than aerial mortar. Hydraulic mortar could harden with hydration and reactive silicates, whereas aerial mortar needed exposure to the air and was weaker.
Now, remember those imperfections I mentioned earlier? Lime is very, very weak. You ever felt limestone? Yeah. You get it. So itās not hard to figure out why we thought these were actually imperfections in otherwise amazing, god-like, S-tier concrete. We used to think it was slaked lime, which is just lime paste.
One of the labs involved in the research developed a chemical mapping technique that allowed them to determine the exact makeup and type of lime present in the concrete. They figured out that this particular form of lime might have been quicklime, which is extremely brittle and very reactive. Quicklime forms at extremely high temperatures. We mix our concrete cold. Another common modern L.
In short, the Romans engineered preferential pathways for faults in the concrete to pass through the lime, which would react to hydration and recrystallize as more lime (calcium carbonate) and heal itself.
This is groundbreaking. Iām so amazed. Hereās the MIT publication, and hereās the journal article.
Ah, I see, road fuseboxes.
Basically yeah! Especially if those fuseboxes are filled with quick hardening foam and look like they were left there by accident, except theyāre everywhere so they couldnāt possibly be an accident.
Apparently theyāre already working on methods of adapting this kind of concrete for modern use. We could potentially fix the USās crumbling infrastructure and simultaneously upgrade to vastly superior long-lasting materials.
@corrodedcoffindisbanded itās 8:30am this made me laugh so hard I woke up
Iād divorce him too lmao
Itās never JUST about the tomatoes.
Basically!
Throughout the day, partners would make requests for connection, what Gottman calls ābids.ā For example, say that the husband is a bird enthusiast and notices a goldfinch fly across the yard. He might say to his wife, āLook at that beautiful bird outside!ā Heās not just commenting on the bird here: Heās requesting a response from his wifeāa sign of interest or supportāhoping theyāll connect, however momentarily, over the bird.
The wife now has a choice. She can respond by either āturning towardā or āturning awayā from her husband, as Gottman puts it. Though the bird-bid might seem minor and silly, it can actually reveal a lot about the health of the relationship. The husband thought the bird was important enough to bring it up in conversation and the question is whether his wife recognizes and respects that.
These bidding interactions had profound effects on marital well-being. Couples who had divorced after a six-year follow-up had āturn-toward bidsā 33 percent of the time. Only three in 10 of their bids for emotional connection were met with intimacy. The couples who were still together after six years had āturn-toward bidsā 87 percent of the time. Nine times out of 10, they were meeting their partnerās emotional needs.
Those who showed genuine interest in their partnerās joys were more likely to be together.
Damn, this made me think of all the āshouting into the voidā social media posts everyone makes. Just bids for connection. From ANYONE.
I think that is ABSOLUTELY what a lot of that is. Our culture is very isolated (even BEFORE covid!), and weāre desperate to connect with others. I read an article one time that suggested that childcare workers stop saying that a child isĀ āJust wants attentionā and start saying that the child isĀ ālooking for connection.ā Weāre starved for it even from childhood.
When they are speaking about a passion, respond to children as if you would a tenured professor at a prestigious university, and to an adult as if you would a child free of the burdens of adulthood.Ā
Children are desperate to teach the wonders of the world that they know, that they have just learned, and share it with anyone interested.Ā Adults pour passion they didnāt know they had into voluntary obligations, and crave a simple acknowledgment of that passion as being worthy and valid.Ā
āDear third grader, tell me exactly why you chose <x> as you third favorite carnivorous dinosaur instead of second, as specifically as possible.ā
āHey neighbor, your vegetable garden is absolutely gorgeous this yearā¦and no Iām not just saying that because the tomatoes you gave me last year were absolute perfection.ā
From what I recall, the first time I saw 'rainbow capitalism' from a big brand was this image from Oreo in 2012.
It created a lot of controversy. Calls for boycotts and such. But Oreo didn't take it down. They were unapologetic and didn't try to appease the homophobes or backtrack.
And I know this sounds weird, but it was like a shift. Proof that public opinion or acceptance of queerness was widespread enough for a company to consider it profitable.

Iron and Tempest: Book One of The Witch and The Wizard eBook: Hamilton, Sean: Amazon.ca: Kindle Store
Arzades lived the first sixteen years of his life barely seeing any human being besides his mother. She was both teacher and friend to him, teaching him to be as self-sufficient as possible. On the eve of teaching him some of the most important lessons of all, chaos broke into their lives, upending all Arzades knew.
Now he's on the road, chasing after those responsible for bringing death and destruction to his life. Because his mother hid a secret from him for the first sixteen years he lived. She taught him hunting, fishing, lessons for living in society. She taught him farming, how to care for wounds, cooking, and even history. But she didn't tell him this.
No one is supposed to know he exists.
So I don't really know the best way to go about this, but my friend Sean wrote a book and I want to share it with y'all. The link here is for Amazon Canada, but it is also available in other countries (your best bet is to search "Iron and Tempest" and look for the one by Sean Hamilton, currently on the Canadian site it's the first result even without including his name). Normally I wouldn't promote something from Amazon, but I know it was the most feasible option for him to get his book published and they've been very helpful to him thus far.
As of making this post (29/04/2021), the Kindle version is set to release on May 1st and there is also a paperback version available (as far as I can tell it takes a few days, likely a combo of printing & shipping; I ordered the paperback a few days ago and it's set to arrive on May 1st as well, but isn't listed as a pre-order like the e-book version).
I don't expect this to be an issue for the majority of people following me (and if it is, you can kindly see yourself out), but a note from the author: "there is LGBT+ content within this book. Ā If that makes you uncomfortable or changes your decision to support, just be aware with no hard feelings."
The author also has various social media pages now, if youāre interested in following him on any other platforms (he shares small excerpts from his book on WordPress and shares things from his WordPress on twitter, which he has also warned about so that those who wish to have a 100% spoiler-free experience know to avoid them): Facebook | Twitter | WordPress

After seeing the dad how do I channel, I really wanted this one. I searched for it and, tada! Mom how do I? Seems rather new, but I love it anyway.
This is such a cute and helpful idea, especially since some people either didnāt grow up with someone who could teach them this stuff or they grew up with parents who did everything for them. I knew a lot of guys in college who didnāt know how to do laundry or cook!
Mom How Do I
Dad How Do I
This is amazing! My parents definitely were not available to teach me things
guys i just wanna make it clear that we're not clowning on spn fans or destiel shippers, y'all have already suffered enough lmao... we're clowning on the writers who queerbaited you for 12 years then did the fastest bury your gays speedrun in history
well y'all, apparently one of the otps i originally had in mind when i made this blog (as a joke, i might add)... is officially canon. not sure how to feel about this.
listen i never expected destiel to become canon. that was the whole joke. because i knew it wouldn't be good, even if that tiny part of me was hopeful. and here we are, a few days after this blog turned 7 years old and they managed to do a goddamn 'bury your gays' speedrun. what even is 2020 anymore?
