Alice isn’t Dead: s1 ch2 out of context
Alice isn't Dead: s1 ch3 out of context
“Because if we don’t look at what is bad about our world, how will we ever fix it?”
- Alice isn’t dead: Part 3, chapter 4: Three Nights at the Old Motel
<3 I love Alice Isn't Dead so much okay <3
Thank you for reblogging this - because of it, I remembered that there were those two sneaky sound clips last fall (Don't and Tell) and I thought, "hmmm ... let me refresh my podcast app to see if there's been anything since," only to see it throw a 403 error on that feed.
"Huh. That's weird," I thought.
Let me try to re-add it to see if the address changed or something.
So I click "Add Feed" and search for Alice Isn't Dead.
And then I see this shit?!
So now I have to re-listen to the first series ("Oh no, my wife is too hot, my lobster is too buttery, my steak is too tender!") to begin catching back up!!!
What is coming ten million people in the street cannot stop What is coming the American Armed Forces cannot control the President of the United States and his counselors cannot conceive initiate command or direct everything you do or refrain from doing will bring us to the same place the place we don’t know your anger against the war your horror of death your calm strategies your bold plans to rearrange the middle east to overthrow the dollar to establish the 4th Reich to live forever to silence the Jews to order the cosmos to tidy up your life to improve religion they count for nothing you have no understanding of the consequences of what you do oh and one more thing you aren’t going to like what comes after America
-Leonard Cohen
I love Alice Isn’t Dead. It’s so American. Imagine if there was a highway. 😟
It’s hard to tell regions apart just by looking at the buildings now. A CVS is a CVS, a Starbucks is a Starbucks. I’m not here to moralize, I’m just telling you what it is to be a traveler now. Every place is built like every place, and so the only thing that tells you that you’re moving is the nature that’s been allowed to stay.
-Alice Isn't Dead, S02E04: Chain
As you head north, the trees shift from broad leafy canopies to the narrow spurs of conifers. And the mountains turn from big hills to great structures of rock, topped with vast slopes of untouched snow. [...] Or you leave behind a wetter, greener climate, and you see the world around you fade from grass to kindling, to dirt and rocks and then, like a sign marking a border you didn’t know you were crossing, the first great cactus, harbinger of the waiting desert. It’s up to nature to tell us we’re moving. Otherwise, each Kmart sign looks like each Kmart sign. Every Subway sandwich tastes the same.
-Alice Isn't Dead, S02E04: Chain
We must have decided this, right, at some point? That we wanted it all to look the same? And I can understand that decision. We all like to feel somewhere familiar. Now we can have that feeling wherever we are. No matter the climate or geography, you come inside the chain and you are exactly where you were before, like there was a magic door to the city you feel most comfortable in. It’s a positive that can’t be denied.
-Alice Isn't Dead, S02E04: Chain
And now, a knock knock joke:
Knock knock.
Who’s there?
I think you know.
I do.
Can I come in?
I don’t think so.
Come on!
I need you to leave.
That was never an option.
Knock knock. Knock knock… Knock knock. [sigh] Okay, well… Okay.
S02E04: Chain
We live in a world where you can head into any direction for hours, days, maybe weeks, without you having to change much what you eat, or wear, or otherwise consume. Such is the convenience of chains, offering familiarity regardless of any time and distance passed. Same stuff, different scenery. And every Subway sandwich still tastes the same.
What hides in the abandoned places? Some holed pain and regret, crimes forgotten and not forgotten. Others hold human beings, living there because they can’t live anywhere else, because they need to hide or because they just need a roof over their heads, even if that roof has holes and a slant to it.
-Alice Isn't Dead, S02E03: Abandoned Places
Imagine one day, all of your neighbors, maybe families that had been your family’s neighbors for hundreds of years, tell you that you are no longer their neighbor. Maybe they don’t tell you with words but with violence. And then, imagine being those neighbors or their children, now 20 years past the war, and still every day stepping out the door to go to work and passing the empty concrete eyes of a dead house, a reminder that you, or your parents, once performed a kind of horrible magic trick, disappearing members of your community. What do you feel, seeing the evidence of what you have done? Shame? Pride?
-Alice Isn't Dead, S02E03: Abandoned Places
There was a field of grass, and in the center of that field was a single tree, frothing over with white flowers. The sunlight hit the three just right, and it seemed to catch fire, every flower a frame. It was mesmerizing, a reminder that the miraculous can emerge suddenly from the happenstance, and in places you would never expect, like an overgrown field somewhere in Georgia.
-Alice Isn't Dead, S02E03: Abandoned Places
And now, a knock knock joke
Knock knock.
Who’s there?
Interrupting cow.
Interrupting cow who? Hello?
Pastures cut through by water and windbreaks, but otherwise it’s unbroken grass for a long time now. But who said different was important, or good? Who said we needed things to be untedious? Who are we to expect better from a world that isn’t? Who are we? Does anyone know? Has anyone checked on that? [exhales] Okay.
…Are you still the- Moo.
