siyeon had wished the amount of blood wasn’t as bad as it seemed. she is no expert, but for sure has seen and fixed many wounds and injuries and she knows that, sometimes, extreme bleeding doesn’t necessarily mean a serious lesion. of course, excessive blood loss could be quite dangerous, but if it didn’t involve anything else it could be easily addressed. sadly this time the amount of blood is indicative of the gravity of sungjae’s wound.
sirens fill the room for a second and she takes a deep breath, trying to process the situation as quick as possible. she needs to start moving and doing things now if she wants this impromptu rescue to end well. and she starts. first, she snatches a roll of paper towel and places some sheets over his already soaked in blood bandage.
“we’ll take care of that rib when we are outside, firsts things first”, she mumbles, adding a bit of pressure to the wound. quickly, she turns to his side and grabs sungjae’s healthy arm to put it around her shoulders and carry his weight. ”easy there”, he’s heavy, yes, but siyeon clenches her teeth, gathers all her strength and starts walking. “i’m stronger than what you may think. ten years of rigorous dance training does wonders” the effort is quite noticeable in her voice, though, but she still tries to do as if it was nothing as they leave the bathroom behind. she talks because that makes her forget the sound of shouting and running that is approaching them. “do i look like someone who has a plan?” she tries to laugh at the idea and, for a second, she loses balance. no, she definitely hasn’t thought this through at all, the decision to go after him hadn’t even been a conscious one. and it’s actually pure luck that she knows of an exit nearby. “you’re not worthy? don’t say nonsense. besides, what i was supposed to do, let you bleed out? that’s not what friends do” the word slips from her lips without siyeon realizing. the word she hasn’t let herself consider not even once since starting to spend time with sungjae. because she can’t let herself fall into that trap. friendship isn’t in her plans.
Reckless.
That is the only word Sungjae has for the woman he’s been watching for the last minute. She scurries, trying to find things to work with, but there’s not much when they are in a restroom and the world is ending outside. He has a penchant for nagging, everybody knows that, for overanalyzing things when he is not in the arena beating up guys who tend to be bigger and brasher than him but that he takes pleasure in defeating. And defeat is what still lingers in his head, after his latest fight, after it was called off; interrupted because he got himself another medal -- that’s how he calls every new scar he got after joining the Kings. The real ones are behind him, in the past, back home where his mother keeps them religiously because she is still proud of them every day.
He tried to reason. It didn’t work. Sungjae has a feeling that he has entered the territory where Siyeon commands and he obeys. For better or for worse, they are inevitably in that together and yes, Sungjae still thinks it’s going to end badly, but he swallows his words because words have power and he doesn’t need to attract more negativity. The other thing he swallows is his pain when she helps him up on his feet, arm around her shoulder and hardly any time to get used to the feeling. It hurts when he breathes too deep, so he keeps his breath under control; bites his lip but doesn’t make a sound.
“You danced? I didn’t know that” he muses, truly, he had not known much about the girl or at least about her personal choices and past endeavors. Like the child that he is, Sungjae's curiosity is piqued but he does not prod at her for now. “I know a bit about that. Hard training, I mean, not dancing. Definitely not dancing. I am a terrible dancer, gosh.”
“You don’t suppose they’ll let us share a cell, do you?” he throws immediately because the pain he is in has clearly not affected his witty responses or sense of humor. He thinks he’d be a terrible cell-mate. “What friends don’t do is give each other grey hair which I bet I’m getting after this. I want you to promise me one thing though: let me get the second page of tomorrow’s newspapers,” he smiles at her gently, hoping she knows what he’s implying. “If only one fits into the “rabbit’s hole”, only one will jump inside it. Got it?”
