So living single was basically a black version of Friends?
OR Friends was the white NBC rip-off of Living Single that premiered a year after Living Single’s first season.
IT LITERALLY CAME ON ON THE SAME NIGHT! Come on. I love Friends but…lbr.
White people still acting like Friends came first even though facts say otherwise…
And I didn’t even get into the similarities like the relationship dynamics. And oh even a couple of the characters on Friends have the same fucking job as characters on Living Single. Not common stuff either: Rachel was a buyer, Regine was a buyer. Joey was an aspiring actor, Synclaire was an aspiring actress.
I mean….
GIRL.
two related people the show is built around (Synclair & Khadijah, Monica & Ross)
with childhood friends living nearby if not with them (Regine for Khadijah, Chandler for Ross or Rachel for Monica)
and a school friend that’s always there or moves in (Maxine for Khadijah, and again Chandler for Ross or Rachel for Monica)
the two dudes across the hall/in the building, one of which is hella sarcastic with a much more “grown man” profession and the other kinda goofy (Kyle and Overton, Chandler and Joey)
a character who used to be really fat as a child and adolescent… and became almost obsessed with thinness in adulthood (Kyle, Monica)
Phoebe = clearly Synclair
Joey = clearly Overton
Chandler = clearly Kyle
Rachel = clearly Regine
Monica = slightly modified Khadijah to make her more traditionally (read, eurocentrically) feminine, but still incredibly competitive with a nontraditional job where she’s her own boss in a field that caters to the tastes of others.
Ross = modified Maxine to make him less “alpha male”-ish (he’s supposed to be a more refined man in eurocentric and elitist terms), but still highly educated and competitive, fiercely loyal… and a protracted on again off again relationship with one of the other characters.
the only thing they didn’t do was put Synclair and Overton together on their show (even though everyone pushed for Phoebe and Joey to be together).
and the craziest thing is you’d think it took years for Living Single to establish all of these relationships so that Friends stans could say some of it just happened to co-develop, but nah. I have the entire first season of Living Single and all of this was established in that first season.
all. of. it.
So yeah girl… just like you said… Friends, even though it is one of my favorite shows ever, really is just a blatant ripoff and whitewashing of Living Single.
Omg I never caught on to this
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
And friends is known all around the world but i heard of living single for the first time here
now think about what that means in terms of so much other popular media, inventions, movements, and theories even. Living Single was a pretty popular show, but nothing compared to its whitewashed ripoff. Friends actors, writers, and producers got Emmys, Golden Globes, and SAG recognition for being a copy of show that didn’t get any of that (the only nominations for Living Single were from the Emmys for lighting… the NAACP tried to pick up the slack and say “we see you” with their Image Award nominations, but it’s demoralizing as hell to see someone basically steal your concept and get the top accolades for it while you’re treated as though you were copying them). Here we are 20 years after the beginning of the theft…. 10 years after the show ended, Friends is considered a classic and people are really asking if Living Single was the “Black version of Friends” as if Friends came first.
What else have you been led to believe was some genius move by a white person that was actually completely lifted from people of color who were actually doing pretty damn well with it but being ignored by whites because racism?

Most upsetting thing I've learned this semester: African Americans took thirty years to build and establish Seneca Village, NYC as an autonomous village with churches, homes, and organizations where they could have freedom and exert political control. The village was destroyed by white backlash which culminated in the creation of Central Park on that site successfully erasing it from the city's history.
If I ever go to Central Park I’ma bawl my eyes out. :(
main reason why I don’t fuck with Central Park
How many times has this happened? I keep reading about instances of this in history, distant and recent.

How to Maintain your Motivation
1. Set realistic and achievable goals. These should be something that appeal to you as it’s hard to go after another person’s goals.
2. Think of meaningful ways to reward your progress.
3. Expect to have set-backs and to encounter obstacles. When that happens, focus your mind and renew your determination. Refuse to give up.
4. Decide to be a positive thinker. Refuse to stop believing in yourself. When you feel discouraged, decide that you’ll fight on.
5. Share your goals with others, and seek encouragement when you’re finding it hard to keep going on your own.
6. Practice saying no to other options and distractions that may seem appealing – but distract you from achieving your goal.
7. Post inspirational quotes in places you can see to encourage you to work to achieve your goal.
8. Practice self care so you don’t burn out. You need to pace yourself if you are going to reach your goal.
