exactly because i swear white europeans love watching black people (or any minority really) getting embarrassingly low scores from the televote. its like asmr for them

i think you're right there. as much as i'd like to think the reason is mostly unconscious bias, the glee last year at destiny scoring so low in the televote was just vile (although TVM's hand in this also shouldn't be understated). and there is no way in hell jeangu macrooy deserved 0 points

i also have a LOT of problems with the EBU constantly trying to increase the drama in the voting segment. these are real people and the treatment of artists and the reality-tv-ification just keeps getting worse and worse. this year they even came up with a little jingle to play for the lowest scorers! a little tune to say "europe didn't like you!" horrendous

really not vibing with the whole "abolish the juries!!" thing bc while it is obvious the jury system needs some kind of reform / better oversight, if it weren't for the juries we could all end up really believing that eurovision's black contestants deserve the placings they get

the job of the national juries is to form a ranking based on artistic merit & musical quality. the televote is subject to the whims, moods, and prejudices of the european population. while a measure of the public's opinion is important and will always (rightly!) be different to that of industry professionals, we really do need to acknowledge that black artists consistently underperform in the televote compared to the juries
