Hey love! Sanremo is the oldest and main music festival in Italy, and it has always been considered a bit of a boomerfest, something mainly old people enjoysed with its boring songs and disconnect from the youths; around 2017, I would say, Francesco Gabbani of dancing gorilla fame popularized the concept of plain ol’ weirdness on the Sanremo stage, and in 2019 Achille Lauro, with Rolls Royce, introduced camp to Sanremo: this was the beginning of an era, and we saw more and more queer or otherwise campy singers in 2020, including Lauro himself with Me ne frego, which got us this iconic moment.

in 2021, everyone wanted a piece of that campy cake, and many queer artists and bands participated as contestants or as guests, such as La Rappresentante di Lista, Madame, Maneskin (the winners), and Achille himself as a guest, who gave us five different performances. The hosts too, Amadeus and Fiorello, who’d had a bromance thing in 2020, went borderline queerbaity, and Fiorello in particular fully embraced camp, walking on stage in drag, performing very fruitily and starring as emo Jesus in one of Achille Lauro’s aforementioned performances.

This got him the anger of many conservative christians in Italy, and particularly the bishop of Sanremo (the city): he basically excommunicated him for his use of catholic imagery in blasphemous ways (see emo Jesus), though only the Pope of Rome can legally give excommunications, which combined with the ridiculousness of the situation makes this all hilarious to sleep deprived gaytalians.

Comunque premesso che non conosco i dettagli perché non sono mai stata una sua fan, la cosa che più persone non gli perdonano è che ha fatto una campagna contro il bullismo in cui ha donato i proventi al moige, che diciamo non è tra le associazioni più progressiste in Italia, poi se segui il link racconta anche un po’ del moige e di alcune sue posizioni negli scorsi anni

Poi va beh ci sono state alcune uscite poco felici ma di quelle non so molto perché appunto non lo seguo un granché
