To all first year teachers:
Teaching is a marathon, not a sprint. You don’t have to be an expert your first year. Work hard, yes, but also give yourself grace.
If you feel like you’re not doing enough, that’s a good sign you’re doing just fine. So breathe and don’t beat yourself up.

Sparktop.org ”helps kids with learning difficulties, including learning disabilities and AD/HD, understand that they are smart, have unique talents, and can succeed in school and life.”
Some really neat tools for kids of any ability. The paint, mixer, photo, voice, and write tools are excellent. Quality site from the creators of Prof. Garfield.
Studio 24/7 is another neat interactive where students can learn about learning difficulties and get advice from online characters.
Love the fact that audio is incorporated into the site!
These are just a few of the neat interactives avaialble at SparkTop. Head over there and see what else is available. Register or play as guest.

Common Core Support Tools
This site is truly amazing. Even if you are not from NC it’s all the same if your state is COMMON CORE… this site aligns all the CC to each grade and “unpacks” how to teach each standard with an example of word phrases… and or lesson ideas!
We are learning about oviparous animals! This was a research project…the students had to look through animal books to find an egg-laying animal, then write an interesting fact about that animal.
You might not be able to take your students on field trips to all of the places that they learn about in your classroom, but thanks to the web you can take them on virtual trips to many neat places. Here are some of the virtual tours that I’ve explored over the years. It seems like every week...
Types of Communities Anchor Chart
This is an awesome mailbox I made for my students. I painted it with blackboard paint so I can continue to change the names throughout the years. I’m pretty happy about it and it only cost me $20 for 2 of these!
Weekly Morning Message - Use one morning message per week to teach grammar. Monday: Correct mistakes. Tuesday-Thursday, find vowel patterns, punctuation, contractions, compound words, parts of speech, etc. Friday: Circle the parts of a friendly letter.
Something I got in class last week. We’re gonna try to use it with the clock we have in the classroom. Useful to introduce time.
Literacy Stations, part 3
This is the poetry station. I find that having the “I can” statements work well for every station. i made my own for this one, as many of the pre-made ones do not address my students’ needs. I use this to help develop phonemic awareness with rhymes, for handwriting skills, and just for the love of poetry. The poems are quite often related to science or social studies content. I have found good ones for my grade here and here . This is the one pictured above.
This website has great list of authors who skype with classes and book clubs for FREE — Authors for all age groups.
