Hi Abigail! I liked your video about conversion therapy in Britain, where you mentioned the idea of "professionalization of knowledge" and the way that "expertise" can be about power. The thing that bothers me is: how can I tell the difference between a "don't trust someone just because they're an 'expert'" situation and a "shut up and let someone who actually knows what they're doing get on with their job" situation? i mean the best way is to look at what they say and do and see if it makes sense. that's why I belaboured the point so much in the video about the conversion therapists of the 70s fabricating data when they even bothered to follow up at all, and why I followed the citation chains so closely to be like, "look, there's nothing here."

once you lay it all out you can see pretty clearly that conversion therapy is bullshit and that the NHS are still doing it, stepping it up even

I did a presentation on an ethnography for my Language in Culture class during my master's and I chose Sorting Sexualities: Expertise and the Politics of Legal Classification by Stefan Vogler. It's about how networks of expertise and epistemic power can result in vastly different outcomes for the groups being categorized. (As a very general and oversimplified summary.) Vogler purposefully chooses a controversial comparison—sexually violent predators and LGBTQ asylum seekers—to demonstrate how the determination of sexuality is done in these two contexts and how these networks were formed and work on the ground, and it is essentially an ethnography of the professionalization of knowledge and how epistemic logics can be applied to most "why things are the way they are".

anyway, I haven't watched the video (yet!) so apologies if any of this is already mentioned, but it's a real good research study in today's disastrous epistemic landscape.
