“You should be in bed,” Carina said from her spot on the couch, not glancing up from her phone where she was catching on emails when she heard Maya enter the kitchen. The wood floors felt cold against the soles of Maya’s feet and if asked she would admit that it added some relief to her otherwise burning skin. Carina stayed typing on her phone when Maya didn’t respond, finally looking up when she heard the other woman begin her typical morning routine of making coffee that was far too strong for Carina’s taste “What are you doing?”
“Making coffee” Maya replied, feeling as though she was stating the obvious. She reached for one of the larger mugs that Carina had brought when she moved in, they were brightly colored mugs and stood out in great contrast to the plain ones Maya had owned but held just the right amount of coffee for a day after a restless night of sleep. Carina watched as her girlfriend stood on the tips of her toes to reach the particular mug she wanted and blinked a few times as if to steady herself once she was back on the flats of her feet. Carina had to refrain from rolling her eyes, trying to figure out why her girlfriend wouldn’t just admit that she was sick.
In the middle of the night, Carina had been woken by Maya’s restless tossing and turning in the bed. She’d assumed that it was a nightmare, something that Maya suffered from after particularly rough shifts but was surprised that when she went to shake Maya awake that the woman was already wide awake and burning up. Carina had gone into full doctor mode, checking her temperature, and getting her to drink some water with her medicine before doing coaxing her girlfriend to get some sleep. Maya had been pretty compliant in her feverish haze last night but right now, Carina suspected that it would be much tougher to get Maya to let her take care of her “Are you sure coffee is the best thing to be drinking right now?”
“I have it every morning, actually would you mind making it for me? I’m sorry to ask but I have to shower if I’m gonna make it to work on time” Maya asked, gesturing towards the bathroom. Carina’s eyes widened at her girlfriend’s words, shocked that work was the thing that was on her mind and not taking care of herself. Although Carina would never tell Maya, she thought she looked awful with her hair matted with sweat and the bags under her eyes looking more purple and pronounced than Carina had ever seen them before. Carina knew that Maya needed to rest, and she hoped that deep down, Maya knew the same.
“I think a shower is a good idea” Carina began slowly, knowing that a hot shower was one of the few things that actually relaxed Maya. The other two things were sex and running and with how sick she was, Carina didn’t feel that Maya would be up to either “but you are not going to work, I already called Sullivan and he’s having Andy fill in as captain for the day”
“What? Why would you do that?” Maya asked, not having enough energy to express just how pissed off she actually felt. Later on, when she felt better, she’d realize that Carina had done the right thing by making sure she didn’t go to work but, in that moment, Maya couldn’t help but feel angry at her for interfering. The process of making coffee was quickly forgotten as Carina made her way over to Maya with her arms crossed firmly across her chest and the expression that was reserved for particularly difficult patients plastered across her face.
“Maya, you are sick, the last thing you need to do right now is to go to work,” Carina said firmly “I mean, wouldn’t you much rather spent the day in bed? With me?”
“If we do that, you’ll get sick too” Maya replied in a small voice. She was embarrassed about having Carina take care during the night and something about the other woman’s insistent to keep looking after her felt foreign to Maya. Of course, she’d had taken sick days when she was a kid but in recent years her own stubbornness had prevented her from admitting that she was not fine. She’d won a gold medal on a sprained ankle and had rescued victims of a crash with the flu, Maya Bishop did not take sick days even when she desperately needed to. Carina seemed to realize that behind her girlfriend’s stubbornness hid a layer of embarrassment and discomfort, so she decided to take a slightly softer approach to the whole situation.
“Don’t worry about that for now, just let me take care of you”

“I thought that you should maybe have some soup” Carina explained to Maya, a few hours later when the smell of something delicious wafted through the air and tempted her from underneath the covers where she’d fallen asleep beside Carina earlier in the day “It’s chicken and noodle soup, family recipe”
“It smells delicious” Maya smiled as she took a seat at the table, knowing that in no way would Carina let her retrieve the bowl of soup for herself. Once she’d showered and changed into the set of pajamas that Carina had left out for, Maya had fallen asleep listening to the other woman speak Italian in a gentle whisper. Maya hadn’t understood a word of what Carina was saying but knowing that the other woman was beside her had provided enough comfort for Maya to drift off into a deep sleep that she’d woken up from feeling much better than she had that morning “You know, I always thought that your patients were really lucky to have you as a doctor but now I’m even more sure of it. Thank you for taking care of me today”
“It is no problem and I’m not done yet; you still seem to very warm” Carina admitted once she’d placed the two bowls of soup on the table and placed the back of her hand on Maya’s forehead to see whether or not her girlfriend’s fever had broken.
“Maybe I’m just hot for you?”
“You are so-“ Carina couldn’t even finish her sentence before laughing at Maya’s words. She was glad that her girlfriend was feeling well enough to make the same lame jokes as she usually would have, Maya’s tendency to make bad jokes was something that Carina had only gotten to see since moving in with her and although she often rolled her eyes at the jokes, she had to admit to finding them adorable. They were just another thing that Maya did that made Carina love her.
“I was thinking, that if you don’t mind spending the rest of the day looking after me that we could watch some really crappy reality TV?” Maya asked and Carina nodded with a large grin. While Maya often detested the thought of reality shows, Carina loved them and had been slowly been sneaking more and more reality shows into Maya’s repertoire and they’d become somewhat of a guilty pleasure of hers.
“Spending time with you sounds like the perfect way to spend my day off”
