Stranger Things epilogue tweak - Mike the Wise

Influences ♥
I love the idea of Mike being stuck in a trance at the end.
But why would Vecna target Mike?
Mike being targeted was the only part of the vision Nancy revived in S4 that didn't come true.
The 4 gates splitting Hawkins, her parents and holly being attacked, a giant monster was all there but nothing for mike??
I don't believe conformitygate because I have 0 faith in the duffers but in terms of fan interpretation it lines up still
I fear we severely misinterpreted that entire vision. It never had anything to do with Mike or Karen or Holly. It was always about Nancy and what she feared most: her family being hurt. And that's exactly what happened.
That Mike managed to not be a part of it is just a convenience to keep him in the plot where they needed him.
Not to mention that for Mike to be Vecna’s, he’d have to have secrets, fears, and self-doubt, he’d have to be more complicated than just a very optimistic guy dreaming childish dreams of waterfalls. We’d have to reckon with the interiority of a boy who has been leading his friends through horror since the age of twelve, a boy anyone would assume hasn’t been a child for quite a while no matter how much he tries to live a normal life. And then their whole “Eleven is an allegorical character” argument would make even less sense.
None of their story elements ever made any sense if you tried to read them as anything deep, I suppose. They just left so many gaps that we made the story and characters 1000x better by filling in the gaps, assuming that we were meant to be drawing conclusions from details.
Our biggest mistake was thinking they were good at their job.
mike is a very deep character, and i think the absolute stupidity of not addressing his VERY OBVIOUS INTERNALIZED HOMOPHOBIA, his implied suicidal tendencies, and his feelings of helplessness bc hes the only one that never really fights IS SO BAD. HES A DEEP CHARACTER I SWEAR THE DUFFERS FUCKED HIM UP MY BABYYY
That would be a lot deeper.
But, nope, it was apparently all about him feeling unworthy of El and being afraid of losing her. That was behind everything he ever did. Even at his best moments, it was apparently only because he got confidence from thinking El saw him as a dynamic leader and protector.
K so they had to time to show Jopper on their date at Enzo's but couldn't include them
Well, you see, they were already broken up by then, apparently.
The reality of it is they probably already wrote more gay stuff than they were comfortable with.
This entire season was the Duffers admitting they were homophobic the whole time without actually saying the words "we're homophobic". Much like they couldn't let Will say "I'm gay", couldn't let Mike outwardly reject Will without the entire scene coming off completely ambiguous, couldn't let Jancy officially say "we should break up" so they had to confirm that shit in an interview because no one actually understood what the hell the point of the scene was, and Mike still not being able to say "I love you" to El when she's literally about to sacrifice herself, the Duffer brothers also could not say "we're homophobic" without injecting it into an entire season of television.
And the tower scene with Mike and Will?
Noah asks for something to get more clear closure. The Duffers end up writing a scene that makes Mike come off looking good because he feels guilty for his past behavior, while also putting Will in his place with some emotional whiplash with the "Friends? No thanks. Best friends" bullshit.
there is still time, mike
Just a reminder that the Duffers legitimately wrote that the day Mike found El in the woods was the day his life started. It wasn't just him saying what he thought he had to say. That speech in the pizza shop was meant to be genuinely heartfelt and honest.
It is now canon that he was serious about that, and Will being kidnapped was one of the best things to happen to him. He never would have met El in the first place if not for that.
And he said it right in front of Will.
This literally flies in the face of "it was the best thing I've ever done," but it's not like the Duffers remember any of that. If they did, they would've remembered Will's birthday or how old he was in season 1.
I’m sorry but all these plot holes in Stranger Things 5 were insane. They said the finale would answer all the questions but not only did it barely answer anything, it just created dozens more
Also RIP to all those pregnant women in the lab who were literally blown up
A great deal of these are legitimate plots holes. Some of them massively gaping plot holes, like how Will was mostly unaffected by the attack on the Mindflayer or how he even went from sensing the hive mind to being able to see what it sees and then taking control of it.
But the scene that Finn and Noah were crying about was apparently the scene on the tower that Noah asked be added to the script.
I lived through the whole "we're still best friends" thing before. I was never moved to tears by it. But that stunt Mike pulled right before with "friends? no thanks" would've wrecked me, if only for a few seconds. Even then, the emotional whiplash would still be brutal. You don't play games like that with a gay friend who has feelings for you (and Mike knowing he's the crush is still impressively vague). It was only done to make Will think Mike was going to abandon him (despite the whole you'll never lose me thing that already happened), and tease the audience into thinking Mike might surprise everyone with something shocking.
what's all this then?
It was all an elaborate ruse to fool both us and Will. Otherwise, Will wouldn't have ever gotten the idea to hit on Mike after Robin talked about the signals she was getting from Vickie.
Will fell for it just like we did, and that was the idea.
yupppppp i audibly laughed
As if El didn't spend the entire run of the show wearing outfits that shows she's taking on the styles of whomever she's living with. She literally wore a shirt that was meant to look like one of Will's in season 4.
Max was the only one to ever encourage her to find her own identity and path in life.
Having a queer character believe he won't find love and proving him right is not good writing.
Having a character grow up in solitary confinement and then ripping her away from the only family she's ever known to live a life of solitude once again is not good writing.
Having a character be in love with his best friend and then just compare it to a high school crush is not good writing.
Having Eleven say that Mike has always been the person who truly understood her after showing us in the previous seasons that he only sees her as a superhero IS NOT GOOD WRITING.
Having two girls be abused by a man with power for the majority of their lives only to leave them dead and alone as a direct consequence of the trauma they suffered IS VILE WRITING
This show is for outcasts… and by outcasts heh, well let’s justr say… straight white men who like DND 😏
“I mean what did you think, really? That a show about nerds and outcasts was gonna have a well-written queer romance? That, in the end, queer love could help save the world?”
Yeah I guess I did. I really did.
