Just saw your comment on Algernon's post and as someone who's lived on the Canadian prairies (where summer temperatures above 30C aren't uncommon) for ~40 years with no a/c, I'm wincing on your behalf. You might already be doing this, but if not, here's a very low-tech, cheap-ass way to help keep the heat out:

The quick and dirty version is to tape aluminium foil up in the windows that get direct sun so it's reflected straight back out again. You want to cover the whole window with the shiny side out and no cracks or gaps, and it HAS to be tight against the glass so there's as little air as possible between the foil and the window (because it'll heat up and spew out into your living space, pulling in cool air to heat up and continue the cycle).

Cardboard is good to add if you can get it. Cut it so it fits tightly into the window frame (again, right up against the glass, covering the whole surface with no gaps) and, ideally, tape over the edges. Cover one side entirely in foil (shiny side up again) and pressure-fit/tape this panel into the window with the foil facing out. (The cardboard forms a layer of insulation between the foil and the interior air, and closing off the air spaces inside it by taping the edges will make it a bit more effective. If you've got enough cardboard, making a thicker panel by sandwiching a few pieces together will provide even more insulation.)

Either way, the panel makes it easier to remove the foil once the sun is off the window and put it back up again next time you need it, and the foil will last a lot longer as part of a solid panel than it will as an unsupported sheet straight off the roll. If you don't have cardboard and want to reinforce the foil, cover the dull side with packing tape.
