@davidmiller in all my years, the one thing I've learnt is if you don't look good you won't get laid.
madclynâ:
When he moved away. David made it sound like something quite amicable, but of course he could do that. âWe smashed it,â Madelyn shrugged, failing to mention that sheâd done it with a hammer in the back yard. But she assumed he would probably be able to read between the lines.
âDo you want to snoop anymore?â she huffed, watching on as he moved from cupboard to cupboard. âItâs different. We renovated. Havenât gotten around to moving yet though.â There were too many memories for that, both good and bad. Even of a time when she was best friends with her father, but that man had gone the day she discovered what he was really like - now he was just part of her imagination.
âIf youâre going to linger, can you at least make a green tea?â Madelyn wouldâve attempted it herself, but she wasnât exactly sure she trusted herself with one hand and boiling water.
Smashed it. That made sense; he was hardly the best dad in that situation. He put the picture down when Madelyn scolded him for snooping and went back into the kitchen.Â
âGreen tea? Sure.â He went about with making it, using this as another excuse to snoop. What if her Mom had a new boyfriend? Did she have people stop over? David wondered if he would be able to look upstairs too.Â
âDo you want anything else? Some food?â This was the most that two of them had spoken in six years and although it was awkward and Madelynâs tone wasnât great, at least she was talking to him... and listening to him. Maybe he could try and get through to her again. Maybe he could explain that her Mom hadnât been around a lot when they were married, that he was lonely (always a great reason for seeking companionship in the arms of someone else) and that was why he did what he did.
It didnât take long to make the tea, and he placed a mug on the breakfast bar. âWill you sit with me? And talk?â
madclynâ:
âYou donât get to talk about her. You donât deserve to,â Madelyn snapped. If there was one person she was protective of, it was her mom. She adored the woman and everything sheâd done for her. David, on the other hand, was someone she would be happy to not ever speak to again. Not after what he had done.
Being careful not to knock her wrist, Mads got out of the car. âYou donât even have a key. I made her change the locks.â It wasnât that she thought heâd hurt her, at least not physically, but sheâd been 16 and angry about the world. It had felt necessary.
She tried to open the door, blanking him as she wrestled with the lock and the handle with her one free hand. âFuck it.â she groaned, admitting defeat after a few minutes. Holding her key out, Madelyn stared David down. âThis is not a permanent invitation.â
David had to stop himself from rolling his eyes at his daughter who, in his opinion, was being over dramatic about the whole situation. It was years ago. She needed to move on.Â
He waited patiently by the front door as Madelyn wrestled with the keys and the door, trying to open it, and smiled sweetly when she handed the key to him.Â
âThank you,â he said, managing to open the door with ease. He was curious about the inside... about what had changed in the six years he had been away. Were there still full family photographs up, or had his head been cut out of them all?
He stepped inside, closing the door behind him and looked around. There was new flooring in the hallway; new furniture too. The kitchen tiles were different. David hardly recognised it.Â
âHuh.â He started. âLooks good in here.â He walked about into the kitchen, opening cupboards and just generally being nosey. âI never found my âWorldâs Best Dadâ mug when I moved out - do you still have it here?â He walked back out into the hallway, spotting the picture of Madelyn at her graduation. It was a picture of all of the kids and their Mom, without David there. He shouldâve been there too... and whilst heâd attended the ceremony, Madelyn didnât know as heâd stayed away.

Turning her head when she noticed that the man was talking to her, Zoe shook her head with a little smile on her lips. âMy kids probably wouldnât be over the moon if they came home later and Iâm completely drunk, so⌠twoâs enough for tonightâŚâ, she replied even though she had to admit that under other circumstances it definitely would have been a valid question. And thinking about the papers in her bag, sheâd love to get really drunk but it just wasnât something she could afford right now.
âGet a sitter?â David suggested. That was what heâd always do if he got in this situation; sometimes parents needed to be selfish about putting themselves first. He ordered himself a tequila shot and a beer, shotting before chasing and turning to the woman.Â
âSomething on your mind to bring you here, drinking tequila, in the afternoon?â There was always a story to tell, especially a lone woman in a bar.
callanwithecstasyâ:
âWe can still go out dude.. but Iâll just be sober.â Could you really imagine that? Callan turning down drinks and pills he was offered to remain in control and sober? It just didnât seem right, but he wanted to better himself for Nathan. Isnât it amazing how one person can make you want to change? âYou can take the piss man, but Iâm dead serious. Iâve even asked my doctor friend for help..â That in itself, took a lot to admit. âYo, your ex? Get over yourself, man. Hey.. Maybe I can get you laid next time weâre out? Câmon.. You know Iâll hype you up.â
âYeah youâd be great sober,â David said sarcastically and then laughed. He could never imagine Callan going out sober, it would be incredibly interesting to watch... and David would want to see how long Callan could last without alcohol.Â
âCanât get me laid with you though now youâre in a committed relationship.â He smiled, amused. âYouâll be a great wingman, though, donât worry. Weâll find some people.â
nathanbrcdleyâ:
Nathan flipped off various lights, checking that everything was shut down as he went, sweeping the floor in the entryway where people stepped before putting the broom away and getting ready to walk out.
It was just him and David left at work, and the sun was beginning to set, daylight lasting longer now. Turning to say his goodbyes to David, he instead responded to his question of hanging out. âFor sure. I have to feed my dogsâbut you feel like walking? Itâs supposed to be a nice night,â he shrugged. âIâve got a six-pack in my fridge.âÂ
Stepping outside, he locked the door and started walking alongside David. âI got a discount on some new stuff we got in.â He had already smoked a joint of the strain Jack Herer on his lunch break and of course, no one was surprised when he smelled like smoke, as several of the other workers did as well. Pulling an already rolled joint from his pocket, he pressed it against his lips and lit the end of it.Â
Nathan loved working at Peachtree. Some of his closest friends worked there and they had a good time, exchanging friendly and humorous banter and playing pranks on each other, which Nathan might have initiated. His lips quirked up with a smirk as the day flashed through his head, exhaling the smoke into the evening air and handing David the joint. âAnything new with you?â
âWell weâll go to yours, then.â David said, more of a statement than anything else. He tended to invite himself to most places without anyone agreeing to it. David watched Nathan with the joint and light it; his wasnât rolled yet so heâd just steal some of Nathanâs when it was lit.Â
âNo, nothing new.â He shook his head. âFew women messaging me on Tinder but nothing exciting. Just an in-and-out kinda thing but what else would I need, right?â David started to walk alongside Nathan, looking at him.
âWhat about you? Got a new boyfriend havenât you?â
Another day of successful sales in his belt and David was locking up Peachtree with Nathan. He didnât have anything to do after work, none of his latest Tinder matches had replied to him today.
âYou want to hang out?â David asked, looking over at Nathan, wondering if his colleague would be spending time with his new boyfriend instead. âSmoke a joint, have some beers?âÂ
@nathanbrcdleyâ
David hoped that whenever he met up with Ivy, sheâd go back to Madelyn and tell her that he was asking about her, wanting to know how she was doing and if she was okay. He wasnât sure if Mads even knew that he got Ivy weed with his staff discount.Â
âHey,â he said when he saw Ivy, smiling. If he didnât know she was gay, he probably wouldâve hit on her. âTen dollars. Got something new there for you too, to try, free obviously.â
@theivyhartâ
callanwithecstasyâ:
âYouâd love to just slap me with no reason.â Callan remarked with a smirk as he eyed David up and down for a brief moment. He was serious about quitting his habits; he was tired of waking up with his immediate cravings or feeling like a walking zombie after a heavy night - Even his band was refusing to tour unless he was sober, and to hear that was devestating. âEverything, man. Well.. Iâll probably smoke up to my eyeballs still but, yeah.. I wanna quit everything.â
âWell thatâs going to be boring...â For David, anyway. He enjoyed partying with Callan, watching as his friend spiralled out of control... and then he promptly followed suit in spiralling.Â
âI dunno, man, do what you want.â He shrugged. âLook at you changing. New boyfriend, not drinking or doing drugs. Have you been talking to my ex too?â David laughed.

When Zoe had come home from work and went through her mail, she had been pretty glad that her girls were at a friendsâ place after school and she still had some time all for herself. It had been her decision to get a divorce after all but when she saw the papers, the brunette still needed to swallow and blink away a few tears. So instead of staying home and drowning in self-pity, she simply stuffed the envelope into her bag and left the apartment once again to head to the nearest bar. Pushing the door open, she immediately headed towards the bar and waved at the barkeeper. âTwo shots of tequila!â, she ordered, not really caring about the fact that some people probably thought it was a little too early for that.
David loved going to the bar nearest Oasis Apartments mostly so that he could easily stumble home after heâd drank his body weight in alcohol. It was early for drinking, but he wasnât working and he didnât have to work tomorrow so that was a good enough reason to have a beer or two. Or three.
âTwo?â David asked, turning his attention to the woman who had just ordered tequila. She looked sad. âWhy not make it three? Three is always better than two, right?â
madclynâ:
He was the last person she wanted to see. Why did she have to injure herself when her mom was away? As they drove, Madelyn was internally cursing her siblings for having their own lives. If sheâd had anything to do with it then she wouldâve protested more with the hospital calling him - but it turned out that a sprained wrist was more painful than she wouldâve thought.Â
âPlease donât call me that.â He didnât get to call her anything other than her name. Honestly, Madelyn would prefer he didnât even call her that. Sheâd rather that David realise where his place was - not with them. âI will be fine alone. Itâs sprained, not broken. The medication isnât that strong anyway.â She wished it was stronger right about now. Or she wouldâve just settled for not having managed to fall off of a step ladder at work.Â
Staring blankly out the window, she let out a sigh. âSix years has been easy enough. Iâm pretty sure I can.â
David chewed his fingernail, elbow resting against the window as he waited, and started to drive again when the light turned green, turning onto Redcliff Street. It had been years since heâd been in the old family home and he wondered how his ex would feel if she knew he was going to be in the house.Â
âYeah, Iâm sure your Mom would love knowing you were home alone with a bad wrist.â He was protective of his children, even if they hated him for his actions. A lot had changed since then for David... and for his ex. He was sure she had moved on... He certainly had. âCome on, your Mom must be fine now. The others are fine with me.âÂ
David hated the awkwardness and had never imagined them being like this now. They were once so close. The car pulled up outside the house and he stepped out the car. âIâm staying and you canât make me go away. I need to make sure youâre fine.â
phedovaâ:
âSo, you know about that ice trick all around the internetâŚ? It actually works. Someone spat their gum out and somehow it got in my hair but I didnât have to chop it off. Iâve never felt luckier for living in the 21st century.â ( @slchatâ )
âReally? I heard peanut butter works well.â David wasnât sure how heâd ended up on the receiving end of this conversation with an attractive woman but he wasnât going to discourage it. âWhat do you do with ice?â
junoalbrightâ:
Every time the idea occurred to her, Juno always tried to tell herself it was ridiculous to think that she could have bad luck; luck wasnât a real thing, sometimes things worked out and sometimes they didnât, but this. It was harder than usual to say this was just one of those things, although she supposed it was also happening to everyone else at Intelligentsia. Something had happened outside apparently â a really bad car accident that turned into a really bad fight sheâd heard a few people say, but it was hard to tell. All she knew for sure was that there were police at the door telling everyone to stay inside while they sorted it out, not to be alarmed, everything was fine, shouldnât take more than twenty minutes. The problem was that she was supposed to have been at work in ten minutes. âAaaand my phone died,â she said out loud when she lifted it to text her boss, turning to face whoever it was standing next to her. âDo you believe in bad luck? Because Iâm genuinely starting to think Iâm cursed.â @slchatâ
David was leaning against the window with his hands in his pockets, watching the scene in front of him. It was amusing to say the least, but he wished he was stuck somewhere more interesting than a coffee shop.Â
âI know those people out there probably believe in bad luck.â He nodded to the cars and the police, and checked his watch for the time. David had nowhere to be; they could take as long as they want.Â
âYou want to use my phone?â He offered, taking his phone from his pocket and handed it over to the stranger. âPut your number in there too, you can buy me a drink to say thanks for letting you use my phone.â
callanwithecstasyâ:
âThatâs it.. I canât do this anymore.â Callan groaned as he popped another painkiller from the foil packet. The 90â˛s party had finished two nights ago and this rock star was still nursing his hangover.. He was used to drinking a heavy amount but this was different and honestly, he couldnât remember much from the famous event. âIâm not touching alcohol ever again, man. Did I really fuck myself up?â He asked, looking over at the other with painful eyes. â-I know Iâve said this before but, I mean it this time. If you see me with a glass of Whiskey just.. slap me. I feel like shit, man.â
@slchatâ
âOnly if youâve got a glass of whiskey or can I just slap you anyway?â David asked with a smirk. Heâs known Callan for a while; heâs partied with the younger man many times and worked with his boyfriend.Â
âDoes that include all alcohol? What about drugs?â There were many questions he had that he wanted to ask; did that mean they couldnât party at all now? Was Callan going cold turkey?
@madclyn
She hasnât spoken to him since he arrived at the hospital and really, David was used to it now. Madelyn had hardly said two words to her father since he finally told his ex-wife, her mother, about his affairs and that was five years ago. How was she still holding a grudge now? Even when he had arrived at the hospital as her next of kin and giving her a ride home.Â
David didnât trust Madelyn being on her own after her minor injury, and he was going to stay at her place (the family home) to make sure she was fine. It was a good job his ex was away on business. David only knew that because he was second on the list of people to call when his children got hurt.Â
âAre you going to speak to me today? Or at all?â He asked, looking to the passengerâs seat of his car at his daughter as they sat in traffic. âItâs been almost six years, Monkey, you canât ignore me forever...â
