This seems like a good time for a reminder that much of the US army, especially the lower ranks, is primarily young kids from poor/underserved areas looking for a way out.

As a younger veteran (mid 20s). I can say that it seems a majority of 18 year olds that join are from working class families. A lot of the higher enlisted ranks are just these kids grown up. I have also seen older people join because they were having trouble paying for healthcare for their kids. That was active duty army at least. The national guard is a lot of people who just join to pay for college, or people who used to be on active duty and can’t afford to give up the healthcare, or maybe have issues after getting off active duty and feel safer occasionally being around other soldiers. Most of the military is way underrepresented nowadays. I spent my first deployment treating afghan kids and helping train their medics, then got called a baby killer when I started going back to school. A large group of the military are assholes who enjoy doing bad shit, but they are a minority.
