On Thursday afternoon, Kanye West held an event at Madison Square Garden during which he played his new album, The Life of Pablo, for the first time before a huge crowd. This being Kanye, it wasn’t just a mega listening session, but also a visual art piece and a showcase for Yeezy Season 3, featuring stoic models in muted and neutral tones. Many of them had signed up (through online recruitment) to serve as sculptures in what turned out to be a long, exhausting, thrilling experience for some. One of the models spoke anonymously to Jezebel. Here’s her dispatch of the day’s events, as told to Clover Hope.

“I think a misconception was that the clothes the extras were wearing were from the Yeezy collection. All the shoes were Adidas, but the clothes were thrift store finds that I think they dyed to be the same color scheme.”

My brother was recruited to be a model for season 3. He walked for the casting. He got the call back. They never mentioned ANYTHING about him being an extra until he was in a warehouse in New Jersey where the extras went to change. The whole experience, was disgusting and discouraging for him, since it was his first show since moving to NY. He was so excited and was so heartbroken when he came home. They also didn’t pay him anything. Had him wearing an old Ralph Lauren shirt and turned it inside out so no one could see the label. I have always disliked Kanye West. He is an over hyped asshole, but I thought that was really low and disgusting. All the money that they charge for those nasty ass rags, that these idiots run right out and buy, and he couldn’t have given them anything?

I’ve heard two other stories from people who went to the casting, got a call back, and were under the impression that they had booked the show and had to stand in a crowd, looking somber and being treated poorly by security. Stop supporting this dude. Like how many comments does he have to make for you mother fuckers to know he is a part of the problem.

Most of this is normal for the cast of a show/presentation, and especially so given the size and lack of experience of most of the people involved…

However

This makes me that much more aggravated of the stark contrast between the extras and the kardashian klan, who they all had to know would be just as much a prominent feature in matching Balmain x walking dead as the downtrodden looking extras, which we now know weren’t even wearing Yeezy.

Why go through all that to make black people look destitute and hopeless and then post up your non-black “family” dancing and having a lovely time in jewels and furs in the same venue??
