many many delicious things to analyze about the first episode of ticket to heaven, but i think the thing i'm stuck the most on is the drastically different reactions that barth and tanrak have to the statues of mary, jesus, and joesph

like. tanrak looks at those statues as a child and it brings him comfort knowing eventually, one day, when he dies and goes to heaven, he can have that. in tanrak's mind, god will one day give him that loving, happy family that was so cruelly taken from him on earth. seeing it brings him comfort, even so many years later, because he still holds onto that faith and that belief that one day, he'll get that.

but barth looks at it and it makes him so upset and uncomfortable he has to walk out of the church. because when barth looks at it, he sees the thing god took from him. he sees a happy family that he doesn't get to have because of god. because god is what has driven a wedge between him and his parents, because their beliefs have made him an imperfect son in their eyes.

religion and god as a comfort for one and as a tormentor for the other. maybe my god isn't as kind as yours....

If I had a nickel for every time Dan Levy wrote a tv show about a tightly-wound queer man who's the endlessly frustrated, judgmental, but ultimately protective older brother to a stunningly gorgeous but messy little sister who takes much bolder risks in life than he does, thereby creating an endless series of adventures in which he is reluctantly implicated, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot of money but it's interesting that he did that twice.

So you don't commit to an actual cheating plotline because of...reasons, but you commit to the fallout? It looks bonkers. This show is trying to make a non event into something dramatic but since nothing actually happened the characters just sound ridiculous.

Tua, baby, who put these words in your mouth? Cause you sound insane.

Embezzlement? Not exciting enough. Domestic violence? I guess we can give it a solid two minutes. Someone had drugs shoved down their throat? Let's not even mention it. But two guys were in the woods, at night, talking? Now, that's the good stuff. Wait, they were almost hugging? For a second they've could've kissed but didn't? We can drag this for at least a couple of episodes and perhaps make the softest, nicest character ever turn asshole just cause.

Only Friends Dream On Ep 8

(some observations)

1. Jack and Dean's date looks so good! I am just so fond of them! Both the actors and the characters. It's great to see them enjoying each other's company.

2. Force Book cameo! How lovely! Both the couples look like power couples, but Jack Dean needs work up to reach the level of security Top Mew have.

3. Oh, so Top and Jack used to be highschool friends! And Jack switched faculties!

4. Dean's worried/guilty face is so good! Fantastic acting.

5. Wow! The conversations between Dean and Arnold, and Dean and Rome felt like the first conversations in the drama where everyone is speaking their mind. It felt like such a breath of fresh air that I realised how convoluted all the conversations have been until now. wah wah wah!!!

6. Work's faster now Timmy???? Where is the actual godd damn rehearsal though???

7. I am loving this grave, serious and worried side of Rome. Though I don't know why he keeps pursuing only Raffy, because to be honest, I can't think of a single instance throughout the last 7 episodes where we are shown some likeable quality of Raffy, anything to suggest that he cares about something other than himself (apart from that time when he looked remorseful after spilling his drink on Rome's equipment). I greatly enjoy him as a character, but in real life I would aggressively hate a person like him (based on what has been showed until now).

8. I love this snappy camerawork. Somehow, it matches the vibe of the drama.

9. One point I really like about Arnold's character is his straightforward approach in everything (except Tua). Now that he has started being straightforward about Tua too, is real character development! Greatly appreciated!

10. Is this the first time (in their 9 drama long repertoire of playing lovers) that we are seeing Aou's character getting THIS frustrated and annoyed with Boom's character??? What a treat! What a flavour! I shouldn't be laughing, but I am.

11. Arnold Tua's date is freaking cute! I want to dance like that too. Should I also start staying draped over people instead of immediately standing up when I fall on them? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

12. Rome needs to have variety in his taste for dates. All he knows is DJ parties.

13. Rome! That was so sneaky. Fantastic!

14. Let's hope hiring a faceless shady hacker is not going to backfire.

15. Rome, that was NOT smooth. If Raffy has even a little bit of intelligence, he will figure it out. Rome should have left the phone somewhere discoverable instead of handing it over himself.

16. Finally, rehearsal! Actually, what Raffy needs is to connect with Arnold outside of the play just like Dean did, and build a rapport.

17. The frame of Raffy standing all alone in a dark background is so good! He really has no one he can rely on. No one who truly likes every part of him.

18. Dean has the best emotional intelligence out of the lot, but it just evaporates when it comes to Raffy. I personally think it's because he can't stand Raffy's nepo baby aura and attempts to get Jack. But There was no need to provoke him. 🤦‍♀️

19. Jack has this tendency of slipping small thorny comments to Dean in a light hearted way (example: You always make it about yourself), that he needs to unlearn if he wants to be a better boyfriend.

20. Raffy's desperate, hurt and furious face is so delicious!!!! This is also probably the first time Aou and Boom's characters are fighting this fiercely, isn't it?

21. Aou's and Boom's acting during Rome's outburst and its aftermath is superb!! I re-watched it several times.

22. Gosh, what mess is this!! Jack and Dean running is so funny.

23. SALUTE TO straightforward Arnold. Gawin's smile is super sweet to look at.

Concluding remarks: JACK IS A BAD DIRECTOR!

Raffy defenders, I am so sorry but you have your work cut out for you this week, and in the coming week. Also, where is Boston? Did he actually drop out like Tua requested him to? But I suppose his role in this drama as the antagonistic cupid is already served, kind of.

let's talk about this scene from ofdo episode 3, because it's been on my mind a lot:

i don't know, there's just so much to be observed from about this whole interaction and i want to get my thoughts out about it.

firstly, there's rome. noticing that raffy is upset, asking him what's wrong and then offering his food with no hesitation. i think in general, rome is quite an observational person. he notices a lot. and its been obvious from the beginning that raffy has always intrigued him, and that's why rome was always following him around. raffy's sharp comebacks and nonchalant attitude made him curious, and he became addicted to teasing him just to see what his reaction might be.

and now they've hooked up twice. rome is still interested in raffy, and probably beginning to catch feelings. he knows that raffy likes his step-brother, but he also sees that jack doesn't like him back, because he's still caught up on dean. and he understands that feeling of being pushed aside and overlooked. so he's starting slow. he's reaching out, offering genuine help in the hopes that he'd at least gain raffy's trust and friendship. and yes, raffy is harsh and blunt to him, but i believe rome can see that its a mask. that there's a reason why he's like this. and that there's a version of raffy that has been hidden away that he wants to reveal.

of course, rome ends up trusting a little too much and easily falls for raffy's manipulations, but that's another conversation.

and then we have raffy. and call me rome because i am SO intrigued by raffy's character. this scene in particular shows us just a glimpse of some hidden insecurities raffy has. it's obvious that he is not used to someone showing him kindness without there being an ulterior motive behind it. as the son of a celebrity, he's no doubt been approached a lot by people that are only doing it because they want something.

and now this man, someone that so far had spent most of his time trying to get under raffy's skin with his constant teasing and suggestive comments, is offering him his own meal simply because he said he couldn't eat the seafood dishes. up until then, rome has only ever tried to get in his pants, so why now was he doing something nice for him when they still barely knew each other?

and so even with rome's reasoning, raffy assumes that he wants something in return. "is there some subtext here?" because with every other interaction he's had with rome, there's always been some sort of hidden meaning or metaphor. because everyone else has wanted something from him. raffy has built a wall around himself. he has learnt how to read between the lines in conversation and how to fight right back, how to hide his true thoughts and feelings behind fake smiles and sharp comebacks. but this is the one time when he doesn't get what rome is really trying to say. he just can't at all fathom the idea that rome is simply caring about him, and instead assumes there is some kind of hidden message he doesn't understand.

even in the next scene on the staircase, when rome asks to go swimming with him, raffy doesn't know how to respond because he's never had anyone try to befriend him like this. its obvious he doesn't have many friends (we only ever see him with pete after all),

and it's just so interesting to me, because his guard is completely up when it comes to rome, and yet, when it comes to jack, these thoughts don't even cross his mind. he's so blinded by whatever affection he has for jack and trusts him so easily that he can't see he's being led on and manipulated into doing what jack wants. just like rome is beginning to be blinded by raffy.

truly, jack and raffy are much more similar than they know because they are both purposefully leading on someone that clearly has feelings for them. of course, raffy only knows that rome is very physically attracted to him, he is clueless about any possible romantic feelings that might have developed and most likely will be for a while.

but yeah, i just love this scene. their characters just seem so complex, and that's what i love about them. raffy in particular. he has such a harsh exterior, but now and then you can see glimpses of a more vulnerable side. and so far its been rome that has brought that out in him.

i know at this point i shouldn’t be the least surprised by aouboom’s acting ability, and yet they blow me away every time. i think my favourite thing about these two is the way they act through their eyes and facial expressions, not just the dialogue.

there were two parts of this whole romeraffy fight scene that crushed me.

firstly, the beginning of their argument, just after raffy pulls out the cord for the dj deck and he looks at rome like this:

that isn’t the face of someone that is purely angry. more than anything, raffy is hurt. he feels betrayed. he feels used by someone that he hadn’t expected to turn on him (a similar feeling, no doubt, to what rome felt after raffy used him in ep 3 but we won’t go into that rn).

whether consciously or not, raffy was starting to open up to rome. at the very least, he’d begun to think of him as a real friend. and yes, i believe he’s developed feelings for him as well, but he clearly hasn’t properly realised and understood that yet. and for someone like raffy, who is always painfully aware of how people tend to use him because of his status as a celebrity’s son and only approach him with ulterior motives, opening up to someone like that is a rare occurrence. rome has already seen a side of raffy that no else knows about. he knows about raffy’s relationship with his mother. he knows about his feelings for jack. he’s seen raffy at his lowest, drunk and heartbroken and upset.

so finding out that rome had taken him out to have fun just like before, only this time it was only a guise, all to delete the only evidence he had against someone that has always had the upper hand and has always been better than raffy in every way? that is what makes him look at rome like this. rome has always been on raffy’s side, but now he’s done something for dean, who he can’t stand. yet another thing that dean has managed to achieve instead of raffy.

raffy has always been the one playing the game, and now he’s been played by the one person he’d started to think of as a reliable constant.

the second moment that killed me was rome’s breakdown at the end of their argument:

and this is the face of someone that’s realised the feelings he’s developed will truly never be reciprocated. that raffy will still always choose jack: the stepbrother that he’s always been compared to and can’t ever seem to escape the shadow of.

i think rome’s always known that he would never be the first option. he had accepted the fact that raffy had a crush on someone else and that their relationship was purely physical (not that that stopped him from getting jealous and violent). but he still secretly held out hope. especially when raffy began to stop pushing him away and started letting his defences down a little more. and even more so after raffy began showing signs of being jealous. he thought maybe that meant he had a chance. and so he forgave and forgot and looked after raffy despite his flaws.

but yet again, raffy made it clear that whatever they have was nothing compared to his feelings for jack and his hatred for dean. he’d willingly ruin the play and his own reputation just to break the two up. and all the efforts rome had put into trying to get raffy to finally see him have been useless. rome was never important to raffy. he was barely even a second option, he had simply been there.

romeraffy are such idiots its insane (i love them), and I can’t wait to see how they go from here. but in the meantime, a huge kudos to aou and boom for nailing these emotions and portraying their characters so amazingly well!

what would have been an excellent storyline for only friends that is hampered by their refusal to have cross pair kissing, is the exploration between Arnold and Dean - with the lines blurring between their on stage romance, their fake relationship for TikTok, and their personal lives. We get glimpses of the rehearsal and their TikTok persona, but imagine if we saw more of their intimacy being created onstage, actually kissing in rehearsals. Arnold through this play realising he’s attracted to men, how he reflects on his feelings with Tua, Dean’s messy relationship with his ex and wanting to win him back by flirting with Arnold and it gets blurry. Like if Arnold and Dean actually got to kiss in the forest?? Excellent. The both of them drunk, but used to being in each others space, all their rehearsals coming to the front, of course they’d kiss under those circumstances. But they realise they both have other people they want to be kissing more, and that they are better friends and onscreen partners, and would make good commentary on the bl space too like they’d already made with the sponsorship and having a certain number of social media followers. But alas.

Ok. I've been quiet but I need to share some thoughts.I'm gonna preface this with my usual warning. Spoilers and personal opinions below, read at your own risk.

Why is the narrative being so punitive to Dean? I said this as a joke, while I was watching, after Dean's mother called - isn't it enough that he's poor and gay? - and of course this was a silly reference but the point stands. Isn't it enough that he got outed, that he has to share the role because of sponsors, that he was drugged by force and that he has a sister going through that? Did we really need this particular plot with Arnold?

I'm honestly trying to understand this from a narrative perspective. Why is the show so intent on making him suffer? But also, why at the same time letting everyone else skate by? Raffy is a despicable human and the narrative seems to not only want him to get away with everything but also keeps giving him opportunities to show the worst parts of himself. Why even bring an embezzling plot if it was gonna be so anti climactic? I don't necessarily think Tua should've been punished that much more for what he did but it was definitely a choice in this context having him forgiven so easily.

I fully admit my Mix bias so, maybe, I'm more sensitive to his character being wronged, but also it's not like I'm making stuff up.

So now he finally got what he wanted but it's all tainted by the secret. And of course Raffy and Rome are the ones who know about it. The worst of the bunch and his future spinless boyfriend. And have it on camera obviously. Because voyeurism being such a theme in this season it would make sense. What baffles me is the choice of target being the same.

I'm honestly just trying to understand what the show is trying to do. Cause in a lot of ways it seems to go out of his way to avoid any actual drama or even remotely any high stakes conflict. So why the drugs all of a sudden? That scene felt so out of place here. Anyway, I'm just really confused about the show's direction and ranting.
