I was OBSESSED with this girl in middle school who was my first crush. Invented all sorts of unhinged shit to make myself seem cooler to her. I told her I liked to drink people's blood and people's blood tasted different based on like their personalities and innermost feelings and all that (we were both Twihards) to try to impress her. We were both on GaiaOnline and I made a fake account where I pretended to be a British girl who was my own friend so that it would seem like 1) I had friends and 2) I was like. Worldly and cultured because I had a friend who was from a different country. I was insane yall like literally what was wrong with me (I was like. 12. So that's probably what was wrong with me)

if youre in the US (especially the northeast + michigan) i would avoid bagged salads/greens and generally wash your produce very thoroughly unless you want the diarrhea parasite

this is not life-threatening, but also who wants weeks of diarrhea and a fucking parasite in them lol. if you suspect you've already had this and it's passed, i would see a doctor. you might need an antiparasitic anyway. if you're actively sick, see a doctor and they might be able to prescribe medication to help you get over it faster.

try to avoid eating raw vegetables, scrub fruit with a produce brush and rinse thoroughly with water. again, don't bother with premade greens or bagged salads. if you buy lettuce, remove the outer 2-3 layers of leaves.

there are UNVERIFIED rumors that the greens have been linked to a company that sources to taco bell. some locations have been actively pulling fresh ingredients like lettuce, avocado, and pico de gallo to mitigate the threat, so i would avoid any products from them just in case. considering how vast supply chains are, i'd be wary of any fast food greens in general for now.

I am a microbiologist who works in parasitology. A few things you should *always* be doing -

1. WASH YOUR HANDS. CLEAN UNDER YOUR FINGERNAILS. KEEP YOUR KIDS NAILS SHORT & CLEAN. Some parasites come from improper hand hygiene, and so do many bacterial & viral infections. Pinworms, which are rare but most commonly found in children, secrete a chemical that causes you to scratch at the eggs and get them stuck under your fingernails, which can cause them to reinfect you when you put your hands in your mouth (or in someone else's. Or touch someone else's food). Just wash your hands, people. It's the right thing to do.

2. ALWAYS WASH YOUR PRODUCE. EVEN WHEN THERE'S NOT AN ACTIVE OUTBREAK. Once again, human parasites are relatively rare, but many are transmitted via contaminated foods. Lots of amoeba and worm species can live in the soil, which then gets on your food during the growing process. There's also any other manner of crawlies (micro and macroscopic) living in the environment your food comes from. It's a simple step you can take to protect yourself.

3. COOKING HELPS. During an outbreak, if you can cook an item thoroughly to at least 160°F, you will kill the stuff that might be in it. Now, I do not recommend cooking lettuce. Like, ever. But maybe those tomatoes are better as a sauce or grilled during an outbreak. Bake a fruit pie. Rice and beans with peppers and onions. Cooked spinach. You get the idea. Proteins included (things like pork and fish tapeworms are incredibly rare in the United States, but not non-existant. If it makes you feel better, I still eat raw sushi & I have pulled a 15 foot long Diphyllobothrium worm out of a sample)

4. WATCH OUT FOR YOUR PETS, TOO. Not all parasites that infect humans can be passed to pets, just like not all parasites that infect pets can be passed to humans. However, there are exceptions, so during outbreaks you should pay attention to your animals. Does their behavior change? Does the color or consistency of their stool seem normal for them? Do you feed them the foods from your table that have been identified as a problem during the outbreak? If you're concerned, your vet can give guidance.

So uh yeah thanks for coming to my tedtalk on parasitic modes of transmission. Parasitic infection, especially in the United States, is pretty rare. Even then, most amoebas are actually like... not likely to make you sick. However, Cyclospora absolutely can, and so protecting yourself & the people around you is the best way to prevent blasting violent ass for a couple weeks.

I really can and will blame the 9-5 for everything. "We're in a loneliness epidemic" well, we have to spend a third of our day interacting with people in a professional way that makes forming real friendships difficult and then we're peopled out by the time we're done. "People are eating more and more unhealthily" people have to spend more than a third of their day doing work related tasks and they don't want to spend their tiny amount of free time making food. "People aren't involved in their local communities" after spending more than a third of their day doing work related things people are tired and also all those community events take place during normal working hours. "People need to get more hobbies" after spending more than a third of their day working, people are TIRED and don't want to do anything that takes yet more energy. "Literacy is dying" to maintain your critical thinking skills you need to read/watch things that make you think and after spending more than a third of your day doing work related stuff you are TIRED and don't want to expend even more brainnpower. "People need to get outside more" People. Are. TIRED. Because they have to spend all of their time working or preparing for work or recovering from work or doing all the chores they couldn't stay on top of because of work. I can blame fucking anything on having to work, it is truly the root of all fucking evil.

I am so glad to hear Lil Nas X is doing well. I thought about him a lot after his arrest.

No other musician, no other concert, has made me feel all of the things I felt at the Montero show I attended in Atlanta. It was a time when I was starting to accept my lesbian identity. I had hidden it and pushed it down for so long that it felt uncomfortable at times to be open. Standing in that room, that display of outright queer joy from a Black man who initially hid his gayness, singing to a room full of queer folk, I cried. It was breathtaking. He literally hatched out of a giant cocoon, emerged with butterfly wings that spanned the whole stage. Queer is beautiful. Queer is joyful. Queer is standing defiantly in the face of those who would oppress us and singing, dancing, loving harder. I think the experience changed the way I saw my own queerness.

I hope he continues on his path wherever it takes him, whether it's more music or something else entirely, he will always have a special place in my heart.

Also, ACAB. Fuck the people who called the police on a young Black man experiencing a mental health crisis. I am glad he got the help but there was no reason for it to happen the way it did.
