#womensupportingwomen hashtag was created to spread awareness on the femicides happening here in Turkey.
Black and white photos of another Turkish women murdered would be plastered on the news and shared all over social media. So stand in solidarity. Turkish women shared their black and white photos of themselves to say “I could be the next”.
Since 2010 there have been over 1000 official reported cases of women being killed in gender-based violence. 474 of these reported deaths happened in 2019, it’s a 200% increase since 2013. July 2020 alone has seen 40 reports of women murdered so far and is set to rise rapidly, more than usual, due to the combined effects of increasingly fragile toxic masculinity, social media trolling, a worsening economy and COVID-19 quarantines. In reality, there are far more femicides that are gone unnoticed.
The Istanbul Convention was created by the Council of Europe to protect women against any and all kinds of violence and prohibit the discrimination against women. It was signed in 2011 and has been effective since 2014.
Now there is a talk from the Turkish government of withdrawing from this treaty and removing the convention entirely.
In effect, this leaves women with no protection. This is a direct attack on women’s rights and their lives.
P.S: Don’t worry about those scars in my hand, I’m not exposed to violence. They were made by my dog, Alex :)
