I think it almost gives a small snapshot into someone’s personality. I have a bit of an eclectic music taste for someone of my age and though I am a massive fan of classic rock there are a few surprises in there that most wouldn’t expect from me.

What to do when a friendship ends

We’ve all been there right? That friendship that was kind of doomed from the beginning or maybe it was your best friend and something changed between you. Whatever kind of friendship it was it’s now over and you find yourself wondering what to do with the emptiness they have left. When it comes down to it no matter who decided to end the friendship both of you are now going to feel that prang of a missing person in your life but not to fear I have been through this and there are a few things that can help with the loss of that friendship.

Find a new friend. Yeah I know seems simple enough when you say it out loud but friends do take time to make and it may seem easy with Facebook and social media linking us to everyone we’ve ever known. If you’re not one for random selection of new friends then try striking up a friendship with a friend of a friend. You may have seen them a few times at parties or gatherings but never really spoken, now is the time. Your friend’s friend will most likely have things in common with you as you both know the same person. However if that is a little out of your depth then try cultivating the friendships you have already, building the connection and making a more profound bond.

I would suggest severing all contact with the person who is now no longer your friend, if they no longer want to be in your life then they relinquish the privilege of seeing it on social media. I’m all for blocking them on these sites as they can’t tag you in anything they write or post, this will help if the friendship went south and there is bad blood between you. They can’t use any information against you if they can’t see anything on your pages. A valuable lesson that I have learnt from destroyed friendships.

I know that it is painful losing a friend and it will most likely hurt for a while, you will still think of them and see or hear things about them from mutual friends from time to time. That will pass and soon enough they will be like an old boyfriend or girlfriend, long forgotten and not worth the pain. When I find that I’m thinking of these broken friendships too often and they are getting me down I try to remember all the friends that matter, the ones that have stuck by you through thick and thin. If this is no comfort as that is the person you have just lost then perhaps think of the good times ahead with the new friendships you are now cultivating. There are so many joyous occasions to be had with new friends, enjoy that and make plans to forget the past.

Don’t hold onto things just because that person gave it to you, if you love the item keep it if you hate the item now is the time to ditch it. It can be a cathartic experience purging your home of the items that you don’t like and remind you of them. Now most people will say it’s petty but not me, if it brings you pain ditch it or if you don’t have the heart to just throw it in the trash make a box and store it away till you can look at it again without the pain. Same goes for photos but this one I will advocate the store and sure method, there will be a time when you will want those memories and the photos to go with it. Whatever you do you don’t want to regret it later.

Forgive, forget and don’t regret. This is my mantra for the whole process; forgive the person for not wanting to be your friend, forget that person as they are no longer wish to be there and don’t regret the decision once you have parted ways. In time you may be friends again so don’t burn the bridge completely but that being said not all friendships are meant to last a lifetime and if this is one of them then part ways with as much nicety as possible.

Remember always keep fighting. Nothing is ever too hard or too painful as long as you remember the good in your life and if you can’t then find the people who can show you all the good in your life and forget those who don’t.

What I learned from Supernatural

I wish my life was more like a TV show sometimes, when everything can be solved in a 30-45 minute time slot. I wish it was more exciting than the life I lead in reality because when I'm immersed in worlds of my favourite shows or even my favourite books I feel truer to myself. Though their worlds are fraught with danger and nearly everyone close to them dies I still hope one day that all those things I see and read are true instead of being fiction.

However that will never be the case, instead sometimes you try to emulate those you see either by their clothes or their attitude or even their likes and dislikes. Evolving yourself into something you would like better and changing yourself into something that feels more comfortable in your own skin.

I have been binge watching Supernatural for the last few months now and it has had a slightly more than profound effect on the way I see myself, just like when I was obsessed with Sherlock. I have always been more comfortable hanging around the boys then with girls, I have precisely 1 girlfriend that I truly adore and she is so much like me I call her my Cosmic Sister. My sense of style leaning heavily towards the tomboyish then girlie with me very rarely in dresses and heels, you would always find me in a hoodie with jeans and a Tee. That was just who I was and really who I still am. And although I am required to wear dresses when the occasion calls for it you would find me happier in my usual outfit.

I'm a classic rock lover as well (by classic I mean from 1970 to 1990 all genres of Rock that we now consider classic), all the music I love to listen to comes from what my Dad and Brother both loved. Their taste in music really helped me feel like a person and not just another teenage girl in high school, it made me different from other teenage girls I knew as well. I wouldn't lose myself in what I considered the vapid seas of teenage doom because I had my anchor, a lifeline to who I knew I was and who I knew I would be. Never wanting to disappoint either one of them if I could help it, they were both so important to me growing up and they helped shape me into who I am today.

This is where Supernatural comes in. Though all the seasons I have watched I identify with Dean more than I have with any other character I have seen or read. His love and commitment to those he loves and the pain that that commitment can bring hit me on a deeper level then I thought it would. Sacrificing himself over and over and always putting those he loves before his own needs. However it wasn't just his commitment to his loved ones that helped me but just him being him no matter what the consequence that made me see that I had lost myself these last few years.

While it is only natural to change ourselves over time we should never lose sight of who we really are, never letting those around us expecting us to change ourselves to suit them or their way of life and vice versa. Dean never expects anything from those around him except to be there when things go bad, to have his back in a fight or just to be who they are even if that is a monster (though that never ends well for the monster). But I meet someone who I thought was a friend and they use to put me down for who I was to make themselves feel better and I lost sight of myself for a while thinking I wasn't being authentic or honest or good. That what I was wasn't good enough, so I changed myself little by little to make them stop but that never happened. Then one day I looked in the mirror and I had changed so much that I couldn't see the girl I loved being when I was younger.

So I stopped listening to that friend and I started questioning the things they were saying to me and about me. I forced myself to stop caring but not just about what they said about me but what anyone said about me and soon I stop caring what I thought about myself. This was years of mental abuse from those that I thought were friends and as soon as I stopped caring about everything I started attacking back. Becoming mean and callous with my words and treating those around me like they would eventually hurt me even if they never did. In time someone new did come along and try to do the same thing but by that time I knew the tricks and I didn't stand for it knocking them down when they tried to force me to be something I wasn't. I not only lost who I was but I soon became the thing that I hated, they broke my heart and with it my spirit.

I look at Dean with his broken heart and his broken spirit and I watched as he put himself back together again and again. I saw myself in the broken wreck of a character and I realised I needed to be the person I loved again. So now I try to see myself how I saw myself back all those faithful years ago listening to music with my brother, never expecting him to be anything other than who he was and him never expecting me to be anything other than me. The girl who loved to be one of the boys, the girl who loved to be different.

The Trenches

Not a sound could be heard from the foreign lines not a murmur, not a whisper, not even a pin dropping it was as if there was radio silence. Were they gone, dead or maybe just trying to see what she would do next? Whatever was happening she decided to chance a look over the trenches. Whatever was going on she had to find out and find out soon before things got worse.

There had been a cavalcade of bombs hitting her for God knows how long but with this abrupt cease fire it was eerie how use to the sounds she was. The absence of noise can be far worse than any deafening roar, the fear and anxiety the silence can bring is one that she would not wish upon anybody.

She stuck her head above the trench line peering out into the wasteland that had been created by war. Through the fog she couldn't see much but there was something different about the nothing she was seeing now to the nothing she usually saw. It was almost like there was no one there at all and not just the usual absence of soldiers on the battlefield that were lurking in their trenches only a few feet away, no this was as if they had disappeared completely the silence told her that. They were gone, vanished as if into thin air one moment there was nothing but screaming the next …silence.

Climbing up and over the rim of the trench she set out for the foreign lines, through mud and blood with the cold biting at every exposed piece of flesh on her face. Reaching her destination she found it exactly how she had expected it to be empty but not a single thing missing or out of place, just devoid of people. Making a quick survey of the area to validate her theory she slowly descended feet first into enemy territory keeping her back to the wall so to avoid losing sight of her surroundings, you can never be too careful she thought.

Once in there she looked around, making her way through all the tunnels and interconnecting rooms but there was no sign of anyone. She was beginning to think her theory was correct, the abrupt disappearance the radio silence it was all making sense. The war was over. Did we lose? She thought it would feel different than this when it was all over. Instead she felt empty like this trench, nothing missing or out of place but something was gone. She sat at the foot of the wall she had climbed down tilting her head back as she looked up, the fog had cleared to reveal a bright blue sky. She smiled a sad sort of smile, breathing in the musty smell of war she let out a laugh loud and completely foreign to her own ears.

She had stayed like that for what seemed like hours but really had been mere moments, looking back down to the ground something caught her eye. Glimmering in the now shining sun she stood up to get a better look, it was tucked into the wall of the trench, for safety she presumed, and as the light caught it she could see what it was. A silver locket, prying the locket from the slot in the wall it opened and inside was a face she hadn't seen in a considerable amount of time, her own.

For the first time she questioned what she had been fighting for. A sudden jerk and a sickening guttural sound filled the silence, she woke with a start. Her body had been slumped over the desk; the sound that was there a moment ago was gone. She looked around the room wildly, nothing missing nothing out of place it was exactly how she had last seen it but there was still something gone. She got up from her seat and went to the night-stand; the locket was laying there gleaming in the first rays of the morning sun. Opening it she looked down at the picture of herself, they had lost and all she had left was the locket she had given to the girl she loved. Gone, nothing was missing everything was in its place but it would never be the same again.

She was dead. Cancer had won.
