kvetas:
Reaching out towards the golden light, the thought of their journey nearing its end filled them with Determination.
“…”
But despite that, after taking a few steps forwards to the door, their body instead flopped to the side. The bed of gray leaves ended up cushioning their fall. Instead of the giggle they’d usually make, however, the human let out a sigh.
While there have been some ups and downs, they’ve been able to have fun overall with the people they’ve met along the way. But they’ve been putting the matter off for far too long and now was probably a good time as any to address it now that the former Underground resident has brought it up.
They know that they don’t want to hurt the king. Even now, the thought of a similar incident with Toriel from the last reset gripped their heart with regret. But they can’t think of any other way to cross the barrier. They really wanted to hope they’d be able to talk it out, but what if that wasn’t enough? Their choice will depend on whether they’ll damn monsterkind or humanity, they have to think about it seriously.
However, it seemed the more they thought about it, the more difficult it was to find an answer. Eventually, a voice that was barely above a whisper asked: “I’m… not sure what else can be done.”

They recoil.
Frisk must feel it in some way, perhaps as an uncomfortable tickle in their chest similar to what one feels during a panic response, or maybe the pressure in their head going slightly to the left. Either way, the usually jovial and arguably sassy presence within the fallen child’s mind falls to an eerie, uncomfortable silence.
They know they cannot properly love their father now. Sure, there is something residual in Frisk’s soul, their shared soul, that allows them to feel something vague, something like love. But this vague feeling has the tendency to slip through their hands like sand, like dust, and--
...Even if they cannot feel love, not fully, this still feels wrong. There must be something else they can do. After all, they showed Toriel mercy without running away-- who is to say that cannot be the solution one more time?
But, ultimately...

Just know that the choice you make will shape the future of this cursed place. ❞ Their words are slow, croaky and hollow and thick with something akin to resignation and sadness. ❝ You kill him, and you will be free. He kills you, and the Underground will go empty. ❞
An upturn of the lips. But it’s not funny.
