[On Going] Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4
[Y/N's POV]
Ryder gathered the twigs from my hands and started to build a fire, his hands gently brushed mine causing my cheeks to flare into a deep blush. I walked over to the farthest tree branch, sitting as far away from Max and Chloe as possible. Ryder successfully lit our bonfire, he walked straight over to where I was sitting and took the empty seat beside me.
From across the clearing, I could feel the absolute daggers Max sent in our direction. Ryder, meanwhile, had completely zero clues.
We were enjoying the warmth when a sudden, violent gust of wind engulfed the forest. The fire we set up earlier had begun to dim. Ryder took off his leather jacket and draped it over my shoulder when he saw me shivering. But a sudden, sharp whistle of the wind completely blew out our only light source, plunging us into total darkness. Chloe and Max abruptly stood up from their seats, with Chloe instantly drawing her sword. Ryder did the same, stepping into a fierce protective stance in front of me while his hand rested firmly on his dagger.
When I pulled out my pixie pouch, a glowing light emerged in the darkness, revealing a big shadow that towered over us. The shadow wrapped itself around my wrist, violently pulling me toward the deep darkness of the forest. I tried desperately to loosen my grip but it was so incredibly strong that I couldn't even move my arm. "[Y/N]!" I heard Ryder scream, trying to reach out for me but it was too late. Before I completely lost consciousness, the last thing I saw was a silhouette running after me into the abyss, calling out my name.
[Max's POV]
My heart thumps frantically against my rib cage the second I saw [Y/N] being dragged into the abyss. Without a second thought, I sprinted after her, calling out her name at the top of my lungs.
When I opened my eyes, I was back in a familiar place that holds the most painful memories I ever had—the Isle of the Lost. I heard muffled voices echoing from my old cabin. I stepped forward and peered through the window. Standing inside was my young self with a man who looked remarkably young compared to his voice.
"Well, you may be the son of the Hatter that's gone mad" he asked
"W-who are you?" the voice of my younger self cracks as I gulped down my fear
"Oh, how rude of me to assume that I'm popular with children" the man grinned
"Peter Pan, I'm sure you've heard about me from plenty of tales" He introduced himself
That's when I realized his boots weren't even touching the floorboards. He was floating effortlessly on his feet.
"I am only after one thing kid" Peter continued, his eyes reflecting so much darkness, and I couldn't help but think about how heavy his aura is.
"[Y/N], my daughter, may have taken a little vacation on this wretched Isle."
"I don't know what you're talking about, I don't know her" I denied while trying to mask the fear in my voice.
Despite my best efforts to deceive him, I could see how my hands shook and my legs trembled. I don't know this man and what he's capable of doing, and the last thing I wanted to do was to betray my only friend.
He only gives me a sinister smile in return as the silhouette in his feet grew larger, making my younger self cornered.
"Drop the act Hatter, you knew better than to play petty tricks with me!" He shouted angrily but changed his voice into soft yet poisonous when he saw me flinch.
"You know what, I could offer you a deal." Pan purred, extending his hands to play with my hat. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime wish, Max. You bring me back my daughter, and I'll set you and your father free from this Isle."
Peter must have sensed my hesitation and continued with his manipulation. He shook his head and looked around my rotting cabin. "You know my daughter always loves adventure" Pan said his voice dropping into a conversational tone. "She must have taken both my and her mother's nature in risking it all. Neverland was a magical place every child could dream of, but that brat just couldn't be content!"
His floating feet has now landed softly and he slowly took a step toward me.
"This isle is just one of her little playgrounds," Pan hissed, his eyes flashing with a sudden, dark venom as he leaned closer "And you... you are just her toy"
The words cut deeper than they could ever have. My life has been a complete mess ever since my father went mad. I was banished from Wonderland with him and was thrown into the Isle like some useless thing. I had nothing, not until she came into my life. She had put colors in this grey and sad Isle. The friendship we have is something I treasure fully because that what's the only thing left for me here. To hear him say those familiar words just break my world apart.
My younger self, who once held a brave demeanor has softened. I crumbled into my feet and my shoulder slumped as tears run down my cheeks.
"Here take this. The moment the last grain of sand falls, I expect my daughter back to me. Do you understand me boy?" Pan handed me the sand clock before he vanished through the shadows.
Before I even stepped to reach out for my younger self, my surroundings faded entirely. When I opened my eyes, I was again back in the enchanted forest. My breath hitched when I felt something heavy in my stomach. [Y/N] was lying there, completely unconscious.
[Narrator's POV]
[Y/N] opens her eyes to see Max staring back at her. She suddenly jolted from her position and dusted her skirt. The two were silent for a moment until [Y/N] decided to break it.
"I guess the shadow are gone for now, it's better that we find Ryder and Chloe then report back to Red"
Max couldn't help but think about the memories back when they were in the Isle. "About that I think the shadow seems a bit familiar" he said meeting her eyes
"I have seen it before... back when we were in Isle. I think it has something to do about the past-" Max didn't get to complete his word when [Y/N] cut him off
"Don't-" she snapped. "Don't you dare ever go there, Max!" [Y/N] clench her hands into tight fists as if holding on to whatever emotion that was about to burst.
"But [Y/N], if the shadows are linked to it-" Max started, stepping forward.
"Just stop Max, I mean it" she erupted, voice cracking with frustration. "Whatever happened in the past remains in the past. I will no longer dwell on it, and neither should you."
"What you should worry about is that our friends are missing right now. Who knows if they already been captured. You can keep on dwelling on the ghost of yesterday but for heaven sake leave me out of it" She stopped, her chest heaving as she swallowed a lump in her throat. She took a ragged breath before looking at him in the eye. "Because for once I am so ready to forget all of it."
Max's eyes mirrored pure pain the instant those words left her mouth. The hurt soon turned into a bitter, defensive shield.
"Yeah?" he shot back with voice so low, sharp enough to cut. "Well, weren't you always like that, [Y/N]? Not caring about whoever gets hurt, as long as you get to run away from it"
He stepped closer, refuses to let her look away. "Sure, you are a Never, because truth be told, you never had the courage to face your battles, right?" Max said shooting dagger right through her newly opened wounds.
