Drop by Beetlejuice tonight if youâre looking for something worthwhile to do in this humdrum of a town. In fact, bring a friend or two â it is a two-drink minimum, but the entertainment will be well worth it, if I do say so myself.Â
Bold of you to assume I donât have anything else fun to do. But hey, you had me at âsomething worth whileâ.... and lost me at âtwo-drink minimumâ. Your boy isnât exactly rollinâ in it right now. Shame too, I was looking forward to embarrassing you with girlish shrieking. We really canât have it all.
Soda is handsomer than anyone else I know. Not like Darryâ Sodaâs movie-star kind of handsome, the kind that people stop on the street to watch go by. Heâs not as tall as Darry, and heâs a little slimmer, but he has a finely drawn, sensitive face that somehow manages to be reckless and thoughtful at the same time. Heâs got dark-gold hair that he combs backâ long and silky and straightâ and in the summer the sun bleaches it to a shining wheat gold. His eyes are dark brownâ lively, dancing, recklessly laughing eyes that can be gentle and sympathetic one moment and blazing with anger the next. He has Dadâs eyes, but Soda is one of a kind. He can get drunk in a drag race or dancing without ever getting near alcohol. In our neighborhood itâs rare to find a kid who doesnât drink once in a while. But Soda never touches a dropâ he doesnât need to. He gets drunk on just plain living. And he understands everybody.
Feeling a bead of sweat slide down his forehead Sodapop reached up and swiped it away, leaving a smudge of oil in its place. It was hot in the garage, especially bent under the hood of a car. His fingers were black as night, scars running up the length of tanned and grease-stained arms, as he dug around the engine seeking out the problem. "Ah, there you are,â he muttered to himself, finding the damage. With a sigh, Soda pulled himself out from where he was bent under the hood. Running a dirty rag over his sweaty brow, he turned to the driver with a sympathetic grin. âLooks like a radiator leak. Itâs gotta be replaced. We can do that for ya here of course, but itâll take a couple days to get the parts so weâll have to keep her here for a while. Iâm afraid you canât drive off with this as is. Leaky radiator could overheat and cause an engine fire.â Slinging his rag over his neck, he let a lopsided grin take to his features. âSorry for the inconvenience, but safety is top priority. Thank god for Uber, am I right?âÂ
It had been a rather shit day today, practically thunder storming while Willa had been working an Auggie was in school. So when the skies parted just an hour after the school day had let out, the young mother had to take her son to the park. It was a warm day, with the sun still high in the sky, but the previous storm had left a nice breeze in the air that made it practically perfect to play outside in. So once Auggie had finished his school work, Willa agreed to spend an hour or so outside, watching him run around on one of the first, nice spring nights the town had seen. Hearing the faint, yet knowing jingle of the impending ice cream truck, the brunette saw numerous children perk up in excitement. Sighing, she looked through her purse for a few dollars and only found a twenty. Turning to the person next to her, she gave them a soft smile. âCan you break a twenty? They always get mad when I try to pay for a dollar spongebob popsicle with anything larger than a five.â
Having spent most of his time cooped up in a garage under the hood of a car, Sodapop was pretty eager to go out into the warmth once the weather calmed down. He liked the rain and thunder, but sometimes you just needed a little bit of sunshine. So a walk in the park felt like a good way to go, considering the stables would be too wet to take the horses out for a ride. Seated on a bench with a sketchpad in his lap, loosely drawing out the view before him, heâd almost missed it when someone asked him for some change. Looking up from the pad, he noted the sound of the approaching ice cream truck. âUhh, yeah, lemme see,â he said softly, digging into his pocket for his wallet and finding a few dollars. With a smile, he handed them over to the woman. âProbably canât break a twenty but here - wouldnât want your little one to miss out on that Spongebob popsicle. Youâd think in this day and age those guys would have one of those card reader things for the smartphone. I mean, how many people carry cash these days?â Soda chuckled, watching as children flocked towards the curb. âI didnât even realize they still had ice cream trucks.âÂ

BIOGRAPHY
born on the wrong side of the tracks, sodapop is just another one of âthem curtis boysâ - a trio of brothers who hadnât been dealt the easiest of cards. they werenât born to any life of luxury or promise. the curtis family was from the lower income side of town - the place where the houses mournfully leaned into the muddy ground, where strays wandered freely and where you better not stare at anyone too long lest you wanted to end up broken in a ditch somewhere. trials were no stranger to the folks from these parts, and that rang true for the curtises. soda himself was about sixteen that summer when the accident occurred. his memories of it are hazy, but he could tell you it was hot and musty out in the garage where he was occupying ponyboy while the cops talked to darry on the porch. sixteen isnât exactly too young to grow up, but the difficult days that came after certainly took him from pure innocence to something different. it was just the three of them now and sodapop knew better than anyone that you donât have anything to lean on if not your family. and nothingâs more important than family - not to a curtis. he didnât think twice about the decision to quit school, not once looking back when heâd decided to drop out and enter the work force. times were tough, and without a mom and a dad to keep the boys afloat there was little else to do.Â
despite this tragedy, you would never know a more cheerful guy. somewhat irritably optimistic, sodapop is known for being this affable and charming young man whoâs rather easy to get on with. in fact, itâs that jovial spirit that lead to his nickname of âsodapopâ - a name his mother affectionately called him because he was âas bubbly as a bottle of 7up.â sodaâs sweet, gallant and not too bad on the eyes. all the curtis boys were considered âdreamyâ by most peopleâs standards, and it wasnât a surprise to see girls flocking to the gas station where he worked. heâs got an infectious charisma and a sunny sort of outlook on life - why dwell on the negatives in life when thereâs so much good to balance it out? he wasnât interested in alcohol or getting drunk, as he put it he would much rather be âdrunk on lifeâ than a piss-tasting drink. it may seem pathetic to some or admirable to others, but in reality that happy-go-lucky attitudeâs just a coping mechanism; the only way he can avoid the reality of his rather unfortunate life. thereâs always been tension between his brothers, and sodapop being the middle boy was already dragged between whatever drama was unfolding between darry and pony. not that he minded - he was the glue that kept the boys together and he wouldnât want it any other way. in secret, itâs always taken a bit of a toll on him, though youâd never be able to tell with how easily he holds himself.Â
bubbly and sociable, sodapop can be seen often at whatever watering hole the people of shermer frequent. he lives for the chance to meet and connect with new people and often busies himself with hobbies and distractions to take away from whatever could be happening at home. since he was young he had a keen interest in anything outdoorsy and âcountryâ. growing up on john wayne films and bonanza, sodapop became really interested in anything âwesternâ and began taking horseback riding lessons. his skill on the saddle eventually lead to him training in rodeo events, becoming rather gifted at steer wrestling. when he was a teen he became the countyâs best âbull doggerâ and began competing in state. he had a pretty promising future as a rodeo pro before the accident happened. now heâs seen around the grounds less and less, but he still tries to take time out of his hectic work schedule to spend time at the stables and still competes regularly in local rodeos to keep his appetite quenched. itâs his real passion, though he doesnât let on how much he loves the sport - he wouldnât want his family to feel bad for him giving up his dream to help support them and put ponyboy through school.Â
even though heâs handsome and garners a lot of favorable attention from the opposite sex, sodapop has only ever been in love once. they met first day of kindergarten on the playground. he spat his gum in her hair and she punched him in the nose. it was love at first sight. their relationship lasted all the way up into their teen years. they could have been another âhigh school sweetheartsâ small town cliche, if she hadnât cheated on him. soda was dealing with the loss of his parents and became âtoo distantâ for her liking, and she sought comfort in anotherâs arms. any other guy mightâve dumped her right then and there, but sodapop was too in love to care. he needed another person, and when she turned up pregnant and alone he decided to look after her. he was content on being the father to a child that wasnât his but the turmoil of recent events and the infidelity were too much. she broke up with him and skipped town and heâs not heard from her since. he acts like it doesnât matter to him but deep down heâs still hurt by it. he found himself wanting the family they were going to have, even at just sixteen, and heâs always felt like he missed out on something - some kind of happiness and some other life outside of the one heâs in. itâs stuck with him and keeps him from being truly vulnerable and getting past senseless flirting with any girls around town. heâs pretty much given up on finding that bit of happiness again.Â
being from the âwrong side of the tracksâ, sodapop has created a tight knit community with the other young adults that populate shermerâs lower income district. theyâve all come from the same roots, a bunch of âoutsidersâ who would rather stay stuck in the dredges from which they were born than perhaps try to get out of there. he loves this family he has - growing up poor and with difficulties built character for all of them and a camaraderie that extends beyond blood. they all look out for each other, and theyâve always got each otherâs backs. living and fighting besides these people is the greatest adventure heâs ever embarked on - an exciting and fun challenge to survive despite their social status. he wouldnât trade them for anything, especially with how they all rallied to support the boys when their parents passed. he is pretty sure there are no better people in all of illinois and wouldnât hesitate to throw a punch in their name if the going ever gets tough.Â
not exactly ambitious, itâs hard to tell where sodapop is planning on going in life. heâs satisfied with where he is and doesnât see much reason to change. however, with the realization that heâs almost 30 and hasnât done much in his life dawning on him, the young man is slowly beginning to see the lax nature of his life is perhaps not going to always work for him. it may just be the spark that could start the flame of ambition in the man and finally get him to approach the conflicting emotions hiding deep down under the surface which threaten soda to start thinking about life beyond taking care of his brothers and to actually do something for himself for once.Â
if he could ever think of doing that anyway.Â
