In the abstract, one might think more representation in media should be a wholly good thing, but I suppose almost everything has a drawback somewhere. In this case, it seems to have taken a lot of fans directly from 'wow, my specific slash ship could actually happen' to 'my specific slash ship not happening is a personal attack on me and all gay people everywhere'.
No, it's not.
Even if a ship IS teased, there's no obligation for it to be some endgame focus of a piece of media - and that's ignoring how in all cases I've seen the vast majority of so-called teases are dated off-color humor or fans reading secret signals into the metaphorical wallpaper and insisting they must be authorial intent towards the ship because because. Often while ignoring legit LGBT+ storylines, characters, and couples actually prominent in the media - or straight up claiming those are only there to signal that the REAL ACTUALLY IMPORTANT SHIP will happen. Because at the end of the day, it has little to do with representation and everything to do with very specific feelings of entitlement to controlling the story because of their 'work' investing in it.
There are fans always ready to put themselves at the forefront of "interpreting" the ship into the media for the fandom or claiming to have super secret insider info to garner themselves attention or just to see what they can stir up among other fans. Like, not every piece of media is for everyone. But. There are some questions we need to be asking about the why when these types of fans stick to fixating on how they NEED johnlock/destiel/buddie/byler/whateveritwillbenext to happen in the canon, building each other up and blaming the whole damn world for being unhappy it isn't/didn't/won't ... rather than just enjoying fandom for what it actually is or watching something like Heated Rivalry which is telling the kind of story they supposedly want so bad.
clearly referring to byler yet that is different to destiel since it was actually written into the show and one character has been canonically in love with the other for at least 2 seasons (not a shoved in half ass scene at the end where mishas wasn't even in character) its not a reach for st fans to hope for byler (even though it hasn't been confirmed Mike is gay) plus the creators never said it wouldn't happen nor the actors its always been vague and never shut down. Colour theory and stuff is a load of crap granted but this cannot be compared to the shitshow that is destiel which had no canon support in the show nor from the actors (aside from Misha ofc)
There's plenty of people who aren't insane about it and its way more valid than destiel its so unfair to compare a far nicer group of shippers to those hateful destiel ones
